  • Testing three Intel Xeon v3 CPUs available for under £10 ($11) each on AliExpress using an X99 motherboard and RX 6900 XT GPU.
    Support Iceberg Tech: / icebergtech
    The X99 platform is currently highly popular with extreme budget builders due to its price to performance. CPUs with up to 18 cores can be had for incredibly low prices, yet still work in motherboards with modern conveniences like DDR4, NVMe SSDs and WiFi. In this test, I compare four, six and eight core models in CPU-intensive games and eSports, as well as video editing, 3D rendering and synthetic benchmarks.

      I've used an 2666v3 with turbo unlock with chinese mobos, excelent budget. The 2640v3 its better because of ring core architecture of the haswell. Up to 8 cores they share the 4 memory channels, beyond 8, like the 10 core 2666v3, they split memory bandwith. So in theory, applications that like memory band would perform better on the 2640v3 than the 2666v3, even with more clock/cache and cores.

    Pretty much any Chinese X99 has a BIOS with 100 BCLK, memory timings unlocked and turbo boost unlocked. Most nowadays also come with resizeable bar. It's become as easy as installing Mi899, choosing the BIOS file from his tool or Koshak's repository and clicking flash. Definitely worth doing on the v3.

    Although it isn't mentioned explicitly, the commercial equivalent X99 machines would be Lenovo P510's, HP Z440s and Dell Precision XX10s if you're gonna fit any sort of graphics card in the chassis. From past experience these can also run V4 Xeons, and can be found for $80-150 with higher wattage PSU's(~700W+). 2667's are pretty much the goldilocks area of the X99 Xeons, after that you either sacrifice clock speed for core count, or overpay.

    Anybody with a non-Overclocking motherboard (i.e. Workstations), and is also afraid of BIOS modding Turbo Unlock, then you may want to dabble in Broadwell v4 for the higher IPC, rather than Haswell v3... Broadwell often results in similar benchmark bumps anyway.
    The E5-2640 v4 (10c/20t) has a decent 3.4 GHz Turbo, and stays within the theme of the video at only $7.
    Also note that the E5-2666 v3 (10c/20t) [2.9/3.5Ghz] also would have fit within the theme of the video at just under $11, and would have been a contender to win in most of those benchmarks.
    There are a ton of other good chips with more cores, as soon as you raise your budget by just a few bucks... The trick is sifting through all the bad, and making a list.

    Great video!
    Could you compare something like the 8-core E5-2667 with faster clocks Vs the 14-core E5 -2680 with lower clocks?
    I recently built a €300 Dell precision tower build with an E5-2680 v4. I’ve turned off HT for a small bump to gaming performance but with 14 cores it runs great in games like Cyberpunk paired with cheap RX 6600. Curious to see if fewer (but still many like 8) but faster cores would get better gaming performance in modern titles.
    I don’t have a 2667 to compare but from my own testing I get the impression the lower clocked higher core count v4 Xeons actually do better overall in games from the last 3 years. I suspect the larger L3 on the high core count models help too.

    I don't game but I do 3D animation in blender and wanted to run AI locally on on my workstation so I built a dual X99 workstation with 32 cores and 256gb ddr4 ram 1TB m.2 ssd and a 1080 TI for only 500 dollars, runs very fast and I can feel the power, it's able to run every single thing I throw at it without breaking a sweat, I can render AI images, raytraced blender animation and web browse at the same time without even a little slowness. Also the naming scheme for Xeon is easy, the last 2 numbers tell you how good it is, similar to i3 i5 i7 bigger number being better the last 2 numbers tell you how good it is, if it ends with something like 10 or 20 it's low end, if it ends with 99 or 98 it's the highest performance and highest core count chip. Also if you want to run dual CPU's you have to make sure the first number starts with 2

    Might be worth it for me, but I don't like ordering stuff off random websites and fiddling with BIOSes. That said, for productivity, going from an i5-4690K to something like this would probably do a lot for me. Though now I've looked at it and I'd probably see a hit in single-threaded and not very highly threaded applications, which is most of what I do. I might just stick to this config until it gets to be impractical, then I'll buy something at a reasonable price and good value for money, with the presumption I'll get more performance for the money then than now.

    • @SIPEROTH
      @SIPEROTH Před 6 měsíci

      Why not buy an i7-4790K for your current platform?
      You will gain performance everywhere and they are quite cheap. Not $11 cheap but still cheap.
      Even if you plan a future big upgrade of everything it will still be a good temporary upgrade until you get your big upgrade.

    • @totallyrealcat4800
      @totallyrealcat4800 Před 3 měsíci

      The i7-4790 non K version is another good choice if you can't find any of the K versions at a cheap price. They tend to be much cheaper than the K counterparts and only be a few fps less, which makes them a fair choice if you don't plan on overclocking. From watching a few gaming benchmarks, the i7-4790 is 10-20 fps worse than the i3-10100, and it's equal to the Ryzen 5 1600AF. Upgrading from my i5-4590 to the i7-4790 removed random fps drops and stuttering in a couple of my games.

      Xeons for this are the same as the i7. The Xeons that are compatible with an H61 board are the E3-1200 and E3-1200 v2 series, not these or any E5 processor.
      The Xeon E3-1245 v2 is the same as the Core i7-3770, and the E3-1240 v2 is also the same but it lacks integrated graphics. The E3-1240 v2 is like a Core i7-3770f, but there was never an F version of these old processors.

      some motherboards don't even list it, hell even Intel ARK don't list it, but most motherboards runs it with zero problem.

      problem for the 2666 and 2697 is the price on the i7 6950x can be even as cheap after a whole-seller in China flooded the market with B-grade versions of it, i picked up one for just over 50$ early last year for a "budget build", and with the 6950x you get one newer generation and working XMP (and DDR4 3000 and 3200 can be had for cheap and for my case gave a 25% increase in fps in most games at 1440p versus 2133MHz).

      I only have the 2667 v4 right now (which I covered a few months ago), but I might look into getting a few more v4s in the future

      They lack turbo unlock, so you're only getting minimal IPC improvement. Unfortunately, the scaling from higher end v3 and v4 CPUs comes from the cache. So the 2667 v4 and the 2697 v3 are the only options going for unless you are on an extremely, EXTREMELY tight budget and in a part of the world where older Ryzen or Comet Lake used parts aren't available for cheap.

    1620v3 is currently paired with my Machinist MB and 16 gigs of quad channel mem, as well as gtx 950. Still works fine for light gaming!

    I really Luke cpu-world i the site is dated and not the nicest to navigate but the info is spreadsheet like. Very easy to read per sockets. So i can get all the info i need the fatest. To the question what CPU would i like to see next would be the 8700k compared to the 5960x/1660v3. But I like the channel zo helped tried to help you out: the best CPU is the 2696 (better than 2699 as far as i could tell) other than that i only think the 2666/2690/2697 make sense (98 has low turbo and 96 isnt much more). Hope that this info helps you out. P.S. if i had to pick i would take 1660v3 or 2697 v3 (2666 for cheap)

    Wow! Can't believe such cheap CPUs can run cards like that, I gotta look into this further.

    quick correction/mistake: your test system specs on-screen at 5:16 show 8x 4GB RAM, not the 4x 8GB you described

    • @Pasi123
      @Pasi123 Před 6 měsíci

      The sticks in the b-roll are 8x 4GB (visible at 2:43, 5:23) so the specs on-screen are correct. I didn't notice him describing it being 4x 8GB at any point

    2696 v3 with Hyperthreading disabled. That's 40 MB L3 cache and 18 cores, a few of which can burst to 3.8GHz. Don't forget to disable Spectre and Meltdown protections. The protections limit cpu functionality and the security flaws really shouldn't affect gamers

    Mate the biggest issue is the x99 mabos.. these are super expensive on the 2nd hand markets

    Good salvage report but I am concerned about CPU instruction set obsolescence this coverage relying on RDNA ll GPU did fine on the frames for newer game titles the simpler the better albeit v3 tied to era applications no issue. mb
