- This video is a subscriber request where they wished to see my process for creating painty backgrounds for my Artist Trading Cards and my Arty Postcards. I always have fun doing this process and hope you find it entertaining to watch.
I did mention the PM Artist Studio facebook Group in the video and here is how you can join the Makers of Mixed Media Art / Artist Group for even more fun during the week! / . .

You are selling yourself short you're more than a crafter you are an artist 🎉
Thank you
Really fun watching you build these layers Ceri. Magic! Thanks a million for the shout out as well. Means a lot.
Thank you Seth, always a pleasure
Fighting that inner critic.....and accepting all of the "mess-takes" is the greatest form of self acceptance. Thank you for sharing your talents!
Thank you Dianna, wise words indeed.
These are beautiful. I do hope there is a video showing how you finish & decorate them. Simply lovely. Thank you so much.
Wow Ceri! This has been a color extravaganza! Have had a rough couple of weeks and this has really lifted my spirits. Can’t thank you enough. And thank you to the subbie who requested it.
I’m so pleased it lightened your day and mood, thank you.
Just a guy giving it a go....very successfully too ! Thank you for always being courageous, Ceri !
Youre welcome Patricia
Love it love love theseCeri. The you are. Stunning....thankyou for the sharing.Well done.❤❤
Your channel popped up in my feed a few days ago and I am enamored with your work. I watched your studio tour you conducted some months ago and I had no idea of how many different artistic medias you are involved in including cake decorating. A man of many talents indeed. Thank you for sharing your talent and wisdom so freely with us. I will be working on these backgrounds this week-end. I am in north east Indiana, US and we are having the end of our Indian Summer. Like you I love all the seasons but the softer ones; Spring and Autumn are my favorites as well. Many blessings to you.
Thank you Pam and enjoy the seasons and be inspired by them.
I know I'm late to this game but I just love this - again I ask "where have you been all my life?" I have learned so much from you. I appreciate you, on every level. I hope you're having a good vacation. You deserve it. A friend from the USA.
Always love some gelli printing time with Ceri! Big hugs, my friend! ❤️
Always love a mixed media Monday with Gayle. ❤️
My local department stores (Walmart, Target) sell large non-stick mats to line your oven with. They are the same thing but much larger than your background mat. Trying looking in the cooking isles in your local stores!
I also use an oven liner. Much cheaper. I bought two and cut one in half for when I don't need the larger one
Thank you Laurie I’ll look into that.
Thank you Jeanne
I can totally see how this could become addicting, I love making backgrounds and often feel a bit sad covering them up with focal points. That’s the part that’s difficult, figuring out the focal point. Thanks for another great video!
Yup, you’re right it’s addictive
Good morning Ceri wonderful video. Thank you so much. ❤
You help me with my fear of failure. Thank you again!
I’ve found it’s not so much fear of failure as fear of judgement for me as that destroys my fragile confidence.
I totally agree with you Ceri. Shopping online is fun but it's not the same @ all. I'm a "toucher" too cuz i like to know what I'm buying... Your cards are absolutely beautiful! I 💘 the pretty colors. Thank you for the awesome idea !
You’re welcome Anne.
These are gorgeous!! This type of video is the best! Long, lots of discussion, and all the steps of what is being done in real time.
I didn't have an eye for color. The color wheel bought wasn't that expensive. I learned how to use it and that helped a lot. What helped even more was DOING. I agree with you. All the lessons in the world don't replace trying. Watching you gives me ideas.
You’re so right.
Good backgrounds. Love them. Thank you
Thank you again, Ceri. This is just wonderful.
Thank you
I haven’t finished watching this video as yet but I didn’t want to lose the thought; you mentioned larger sizes of the non-stick mat. An online crafting shop by the name of Joggles (USA) sells non-stick mat by the foot. I don’t recall the exact measurement across, maybe 30-inches, so you are able to cover your entire work table. Now back to our regularly scheduling program …. I am loving the colour combinations so far!
Thank you Karin I’ll look into that.
Hello from southern California! I love watching you create! I am so inspired by your words....not trying because I am afraid it will not be "perfect" rings so true with me. thank you for helping me get over that sentence :}}}
Nancy there are days when I can’t create anything because the fear of not getting it right cripples me, I think a lot of us struggle from the same problem however occasionally you get to the point where you just feel free to create and not fear the results and thats when the magic truly happens and we all enjoy our art so much more on those days. The more you do the easier it will get.
I like this process. #wiggleit ;) I like how you made sure we were seeing the atc's from different angles.
I hope you have a delightful day. Love&hugs to you and Biscuit.
Thank you Darcy.
This was fun. Love it. Going to try this, this afternoon after I clean the garage. We have a hurricane coming next week so I have to make room for patio stuff🤪 that’s part of living in Florida 🌴. I do also love shopping in stores and feeling the things, magazines also. I’m not an online shopper. I’m old school🤣😂, but I’m not old🤣😂 at least I don’t think so 52🥳. Until next time.
Tabatha you’re definitely not old, please stay safe in the hurricane. Thank you
Ceri, I thoroughly enjoyed this video & Part 2!!💓 I would love to see this brayering & kissing technique scaled up to a larger gel plate for larger papers. Not sure if you’ve tried that before but I’d love to see your take on it! Your creative approach inspires me immensely (as I too struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, & OCD) and I look forward to every new video release, especially your gel printing videos!!😍🎨🌈
Hello Natalie, I have used these techniques when I’ve created 12x12 backgrounds, thank you for your comment, I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed my video.
@@CeriGriffiths I found you using this technique in the “Using 12x12 Unused Papers” video and I’m sure I’ll find more examples as I keep re-watching your other videos. And I’m going to try that myself on my 9x12 plate cuz I found a bunch of ugly patterned papers sitting around!
I love these! I especially love the brayer off sheets, I want to make a whole book of these for my junk journals.... off to my craft room I go... Thank you for showing us this super simple but so amazing process!
Thank you
I enjoyed watching you create you background for trading cards.
Thank you Lisa
Ceri, Every Single Piece is Gorgeous!
Thank you
Enjoyed your video and always love hearing you chatting 💜
Thank you
I’m with you, Ceri! I love to walk in craft stores! Unfortunately there aren’t many where I live.
There’s only one left here now and it’s a Hobbycraft, not the cute little store full of treasures.
I love them all but I do have a favorite out of this group the one with what your called green it the one at end of the video that the atc was laying on top of.. to me I see a picture of a tree and a lake science so that is why it's my favorite one. Thanks for sharing one day I'm going to have my geli plate and supplies out and follow along or rewatch and follow.
I think thats one of the things I love about art, it’s so open to interpretation by another’s eye.
Really enjoyed this video. Backgrounds tend to be a sticking point for me, so if appreciated your comments on just keep going, it is not necessary to get perfection each time.
Just have fun with it
Due to having mobility issues I do most of my shopping online. Which has been a God send for me. I so miss going to the small independent shops but they have been disappearing for years. I bought some geli plates a few years ago but haven't been brave enough to try to do anything yet. You can get bigger matt try Amazon. Thanks for sharing your processes. Take care stay safe.
Thank you Laura.
I love your work! Your postcards are just beautiful!!
Thank you so much Connie
Love Love ❤
Thank you
Very fun! Love the colors you used 😍
Thank you
I’m with you!! I’m in Texas, US and it is so HOT here about 75% of the year. Our winters usually only get up to about 60* Fahrenheit daily. Blah! 🥵
Ahhh, I can’t wait to make these post cards!! Thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful video! ❤️
You’re welcome
Thank you so much for this video Ceri, been toying for a while about buying a plate to try you have shown me how much fun this will be thank you.
Thank you Ginny, they can be an expensive investment so I recommend starting with a 5”x7” plate, sounds small but you can do a lot with it.
@@CeriGriffiths yes here in NZ everything is pricey, but i think you have shown md that its going to be used a lot so will be a good investment, thank you for the size recommendation.❤️
Dot from Derbyshire
Hi Ceri, a bit of info for you. I've remembered where I saw the video about changing an opaque paint into a transparent paint. It was by Gisele Grenier, how to make paint transparent without using water. Going to watch more of your videos today always enjoy them, thanks Dot x
Thank you Dot.
Hi Ceri! I've really enjoyed your session of ATCs & Postcards. Love the various color combinations on them. Can't wait to see the final cards. Take care!
You’re welcome.
💜💜💜 very entertaining - thank you
You’re welcome
Ceri don't ever let anybody tell you you can't put colors together. I would love to be able to create something like your brayer clean off sheets. Yours turn out looking better than my attempts at gelli printing. There was one little ATC, when you were showing them at the end, that you felt like needed something else but as soon as I saw it I thought "radiance". It had a glow about it. When you're talking about being a perfectionist, perfection is in our own minds, we all have a different concept of it. I'm sure Jackson Pollock saw perfection in his artwork but I can't see it. So just do what makes you happy. There are apparently many of us who agree with you as your rising subscriber numbers show. Thanks so much for sharing.😊
It’s a constant struggle for me to not be a perfectionist, it’s a battle Ill never totally win but as I’m aware of it I can control it.
Great technique, they turned out so good
Thank you, sometimes it’s doesn’t always turn out good but I did like these.
Fantastic!
Thanks for explaining how you have mounted you gel plate. 😃
Thank you
Love the color combo's, you are braver than I. Experience will overcome the fear. I found large craft mats on amazon, silicone 3 ft by 4 ft for $49.99. Too expensive for me. I found one 78.7 by 15.7 for $37.99. you can get that in black or white. I found these under "extra large silicone mats".
Thank you Sandra I feel a little outside the budget I’m willing to spend at the moment.
Love the color combinations as most I wouldn’t try
I do surprise myself with some of my combinations however I do sometimes make mud.
Really enjoyed this video. It has inspired me to go make my own.
Fabulous
Your show and tell at the end of this video is full of awesome spontaneous images❤️
Thank you Pati
Fascinating! I love how these turned out. The process seems so random but the results are lovely.
I’m with you on the weather. It’s perfect in London at the moment. I’m looking forward to all the autumn colours 🙂
I love the autumn colours.
Love watching and hearing your thought process. Very inspiring.
Thank you
Such a helpful video- thank you 💝
You're so welcome Pamela.
YAY for doing your bit for the planet!
Thank you, I do try to not be such a perfectionist and I think I’m getting there a little, I do use my gut to tell me when things are finished so I’m getting better at knowing when to stop working on things. It’s still something I’m working on.
Thank you, Ceri. This was both educational and inspiring. Much appreciated. Take care.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your methods. So interesting and insightful to hear your thought process.
Thank you
So nice!
Thank you
Another lovely video with fabulous creations! Thank you, Ceri, for sharing.
Thank you
Those post cards are awesome. You give me loads of ideas. Thank You Cari.
I love to inspire Deb.
This gives me great ideas for doing my backgrounds on my paintings, which I do on canvas.. Thankyou for sharing your technique.. I have subscribed..
Wonderful Rita.
Watching you create backgrounds is mesmerizing and entertaining.
Thank you
These are fabulous Ceri!
Great job⭐️
Love the process!! As always, thank you for sharing ❤️
Thank you
Thank you so much for the close-ups at the end. Your postcards really are stunning! Loved watching the process and hearing your thoughts. Thank you very much. :)
You’re welcome.
I love your videos thanks
Thank you
Thank you! I am new to paints and gelli plate. Not sure I have opaque or transparent colors yet, so I'll be checking. Thanks for the demo and sharing info!
You’ll find your preferences.
Great video Ceri. I’m so glad i found your channel. Looking forward to giving this a go.
Fabulous.
Those are so cool & will make neat backgrounds!! TFS
Thank you Nanci
They turned out awesome Ceri!!
Thank you
Joggles has the larger table covers which wipe clean.
Very nice Ceri. They are lovely. TFS Hope you have a great day.
Thank you Donna.
Absolutely love these. I would love to see you do the finishing touches.
I’ll try.
I'm only at 2:30 and already I've learned to use a separate sketchbook for brayer roll-offs, what a cool, novel, fantastic idea! If I didn't learn anything else, it would be worth it just for that! Your roll-off pages are so cool, too! Thank you so much for all you share, Ceri. Okay, I'm gonna grab a cup of tea, a note pad, and keep watching.
Thank you, have fun.
I really enjoyed this. I gonna to try it myself. I have done something like this but not to this extent.
Go for it
lovely results!! in this case more seems to equal more (better)!! 😊
Thank you
Those are all so pretty with all the colors. Would love to see you do some finishing on them to see what a final piece would look like. You do have a wonderful eye for color.
Thank you Robin, I’ve been considering videoing me taking some to completion but I find it such a personal thing that I’m not yet ready to share that process which can take me a while to do but I may in the future work only a specific theme and see if I can video that from start to finish.
Wonderful! I’m inspired to give it a go! I’m so impatient and want it right the first time. I do have to constantly remind myself that it’s only paper. Thanks for sharing.
Have fun with it Gwen.
Ceri: you always look like you’re having such a good time when the paints come out. These colors are uplifting. I will be interested in seeing how you decorate them. Carol from California
Carol, my craft come art cave is my happy place, my escape from the real world.
This video was amazing to watch, just loved it so much. You get the added colour right each time. Would love to see further work on these cards. Thank you for another fabulous video.
I wasn’t planning to film more but after so many requested it I filmed a follow up, it should launch Tuesday.
@@CeriGriffiths Thank you and looking forward to that.
Hallo Ceri, I love your finished card. You bring with all the paint layers, a lot of depths in it. They are backgrounds but they are so lovely as they are as they (if you know what I main. ) When you look at them you can see persons, sunsets, birds in it. I love it. 👌
I agree Simone some times I’ll just leave them as they are and not work on the further as I also see other things within them. Thank you
Brayer page book? Brilliant!
Not my idea but one I love, I use art pads as I then turn those into journal pages I’ve seen others using old text books so they have print in the background for collage.
Love the color choices! 😍 I am looking forward to your next video. I do hope you will continue to film on with these and turn them into beautiful finished pieces ❤️
It’s difficult because i tend to work on several postcards and ATC’s at the same time over a period of time but I’ll give it some thought and might do a follow up video.
Thank you for sharing your process! I have done this in the past with rolodex cards. I used my 12x12 gel plate and placed multiple cards down all at once. This helped the process go quite a bit faster!
You’re right it does go quicker with a larger plate and I very often do mass makes that way however I wanted people to see that it’s possible with a smaller plate so that they’re not intimidated by a larger plate, have a great day and thank you for your comment.
These are so beautiful and would make lovely digitals. Hint, hint😊
Joanne, the problem with making things like this into digitals is that there no guarantees that when you print them they will look the same, I can make sure they are colour balanced and look the same when I convert them into a digital however a lot will depend on what sort of printer and paper you are using therefore I’ve hesitated to make digitals from things like this. For the best results its better to take them to a print shop to get them printed on a lazer jet printer.
These are so gorgeous!! Thank you for showing us how you make them!! Congrats on 55k also!! On to 100k!!😁💖
I would love to see how you finish these off as well 😉
Thank you Rory, one day I may film that part of the process but I take a long time to complete a piece of art and feel it would be a hard thing to film in a coherent way.
@@CeriGriffiths I totally understand that lol.. Can you us show the finished product maybe? That would be awesome 😊💖
I don't know where you get them any bigger than that but you might try sewing supply of some some kind it's made out of Teflon
❤❤
Thank you
Hint here. Take a backpack when shopping so you can take those goodies home with you. Cheers.
Good idea.
I’ll have to dig out my gel plates again. I live on a small island on the west coast of Canada. We do have a small craft store, but I do have to buy stamps and stencils online. I try to buy online from independent craft stores, and not Amazon or other large stores.
Alison I fully understand that however here in the UK the small businesses are going out of business due to the current economical climate, fingers crossed some will survive.
@@CeriGriffiths I'm a firm believer in shopping local, and Canada's small businesses have also suffered. The craft stores I order online from are independently owned, and I give them as much business as my budget will allow. It's a sad economic climate around the world for sure.
These are awesome. I’ve had a gel plate for a few months and can’t find the time. I’m packing to move cross country here in the states. It’s sad there’s no time right now
When the time is right you’ll love it.
I agree, I prefer to see and touch craft and browse ,postage to Australia is expensive
clothes I want to try them on rather to take the risk so I end up not buying anything
Totally agree.
I've used this for years from Amazon: Jumbo Non Stick PTFE Craft Mat Part # 7058-16" x 36" x Heavy Duty 5 mil . Heavier than Tim's and just as good.
I’ll check it out thank you.
What r the black circles on your pad. Just curious sorry. Love watching you. Your truly an amazing person to watch.
The black circles are actually the sticky feet on the underneath of the plexiglass plate that stops it moving around when I’m using my brayer.
Your instincts said...mine said Black or navy blue😂
Instincts, gut feelings are often the right choice.
Calcium carbonate can be added to acrylic paint to make it matte.
Hello, how are you doing today???
Thank you I didn’t know that.
I had written earlier and not heard back yet. In an earlier vid you used small butterflies that were printed on both sides and already cut out. I wasn't sure of the company I understood you to say. Would you mind letting me know what company I can order them from? I really appreciate the information. Thank you. I love your vids. So informative.
Sorry Cindy I’ve got a backlog of comments I’m trying to work through, if you check out this video it should give you all you need to know about the butterflies. czcams.com/video/pXWIaoMXGRE/video.html
Hi Ceri, love your videos. I’m new to Gelli printing didn’t realize you could use chalk paint as well. Do you ever print over patterned paper? I’ve got loads of it . TFS
Yes I do, I’ll often use 12x12 craft pads which are patterns I don’t like, I even use wallpaper.
So, I have the plates, paints, brayers & papers! But I’ve never been brave enough to use them! Would your technique be a good first try or can you dumb it down even more for me? I never saw you wipe the brayer, is running it over the art paper pad enough? When you actually finish your days work, does everything get a good wipe down with water? I also wondered if you could pick up the extra color off the mat? I also use cleanup cloths, I have the flour sack towels that Tim Holtz uses & I really like them. He never washes them, just tosses them when they’re too dirty. I wait till I have a little pile & then wash them all together. They’re sort of a light cream color now! The only thing I no longer use the cloths for are solvent glues such as 3-in-1 & fabritac. They don’t wash out & leave a crusty area on the towels. All the water soluble inks & glues come out, except stronger colors do stain a bit! Help save the planet! Thank you, if you have the time to answer my questions I’d appreciate it so much! You are a very good teacher! Erica❤
Erica I would just start by simply making some backgrounds until you get used to the amount of paint you really require which is likely to be a lot less than you use the first time you try. I only wipe my brayer if I’ve used black acrylic paint as that seems to hang around on the brayer other than that I just relay on rolling my brayer off onto paper which cleans it enough for me, at the end of an session I will wipe my plates cleans with a slightly damp cloth. Tim can afford to throw clothes away we are more sensible and will wash them. You’re right glue is not easily washed out of fabric. Have fun creating.
What sort of gel plate are you using
I normally use GelPress gel plates and have a range of sizes, my favourites are the 5x7" and the 12x12".
Q: what do you mean by “back” your postcards and how do you do it? I assume you are covering the unpainted side with something, but what? Thanks.
Thats correct Sue, because I always get glue or paint on the reverse side of the postcard when I've finished I glue a piece of writing paper or card stock onto the back to give a clean writing surface, the thickness of the backing depends on the thickness of the postcard.
Thanks again!
I went to check out the PM group, but it is not available.
Shelly I’m sorry I have the hardest time sharing the link to their facebook group I never seem to get it right, heres the link again and this is via Safari I hope it works for you or search facebook for makers of mixed media art and artist it should come up. facebook.com/groups/2463741310607684/about/
Do u make your own texture paste???
I tried a long time ago but I didn’t like the results.
@@CeriGriffiths thank u for your answer ! 🫶🏻
I'm so sorry Cari, I just can't hear you. Maybe it's my tablet, I have the volume up as far as it goes.
Deb I’m not sure why because I had a comment the other day about the volume on one of my videos (it might have been you) and this time I increased the volume to 200% just to make sure it was load enough, I’m not able to go much louder because the sound bar on my editing software gives me warning of distortion. Maybe on my next video I’ll have to ask if people who watch the video can give me their feedback on the level of volume just for me to see if its my end or if it something CZcams has done.
@@CeriGriffiths Thank You, Cari
It very well could be my tablet. Your videos isn't the only one I can't hear. Maybe it's just that you're soft spoken. I know I'm hard of hearing & need new hearing aids. Some videos comes through loud & clear & others don't. I have noticed though soft spoken people are the ones that's hardest to hear or not hear. Even in person some family seems so low & soft I can't hear them, they get irritated because I keep asking for them to repeat or speak up. Anyway, it could very well all be on my end. Thank you so much for trying & all you do & share. I love your videos & ideas.
And another lung disease of some kind that you have to get a shot for so I'd be careful again😊 I like you too much😊
Thank you
