Interviewer: what’s your favorite progressive rock band?
Me: yes
Interviewer: what?
Me: Y E S
This is brilliant
Well played mate.
Wow? You love all of them? I like progress too, but some bands are... wait, hold on... oh, never mind. I see what you did here
🎵I’ll be the roundabout🎵
Imagine a band called 'NO'. And they are the warm up band for YES.
The announcer says, "Everybody give it up for NO! And the crowed replies Yessss!
The announcer gets frustrated and says NO! . But the crowd replies Yesssss!
Eventually the band, NO, doesn't get to come on stage.
Sadly enough, the band 'NO' never makes it into the big times.
tool is #9? you must have been high
yes
Classic tool fan.
yes (Fragile) and Genesis (Foxtrot) are the best albumes ever. Have you listened to the swedish group "Samla mammas Manna"? The album no.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Familjesprickor&action=edit&redlink=1 Best ever!!!!!
Audun Eiriksson WTF
high! high! you must've been, highyayayaaaaa
You can’t deny opening Pink Floyd’s entry with Echoes was the only way to introduce them. I fucking love Echoes!
Ikr, but to introduce Crimson with Elephant Talk is blasphemous!
@@zackzallie8735 It should’ve been Schizoid Man
Agreeeeed.
Emerson Lake and Palmer is one of the pioneers of the genre, and, for me, the best
Absolutely
Valid point
Yes, Rush?
Definitely, what would prog rock be without ELP! They set the highest of standards in prog rock. Greg lake is probably the best rock singer and seemed like the best best rock guitarist of his time. And for Keith Emerson, he was definitely the greatest rock pianist ever and a titan compared to everyone else.
Personally its my favorite band of all time but for the best prog rock band its going to be king crimson
I guess Opeth is just my imagination
They should have gotten at least an HM, especially if you consider their last 3 albums.
alltheworldsastage I think most of the fanbase would prefer to forget the last 3 turds.
Blackwater Park alone should have landed them in the top ~5 of this list.
twistedplums Re-watch 0:40
Now slap the shit out of yourself.
twistedplums They have not done a prog metal list, or at least not a video.
Regardless of their choices (which are chosen by the sheep who vote for this crap), they stated it's both rock and metal. So, the best of BOTH genres should be chosen. Opeth is THE best progressive metal band. That is not arguable.
My thoughts exactly - where are they on here... seriously? A notable mention at-least!
Too much Prog Metal in this Prog Rock list.
Prog Metal should have its own top 10 list.
This I agree with... to much great material for just one list.
Yes, genesis, king Crimson and Pink Floyd should have been in the top 4 as they practically invented prog rock.
you idiot she said "rock or metal"
And I said 'too much prog metal in this prog rock list.
Prog Metal should have its own top 10 list."
autoduck .. that's a good idea.... but who would be on it? You should do a mock up, give us an example of what you are thinking of... would this list be confined to just prog rock? Or will there be a variety of different kinds of music?
1 - King Crimson
2 - Pink Floyd
3 - Yes
4 - Genesis
5 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I'd swap genesis for ELO (early stuff was great) but we are on the same wavelength.
Fuck off jerk 😂😂😂
I would move a couple of these around, but they should all be top 5 for sure. This is a very confusing list.
King Crimson and ELP are not at the level of Jethro Tull, only few albums are good the rest is noise , J. T should be in the first three .
@@javierllerena5756 Actually, Tull was my favorite band for several years... Until I discovered King Crimson. So I respectfully disagree. [I've still seen Tull more than any other group, and in two countries -- USA 4 times, & twice in Israel.]
No disrespect to Coheed & Cambria but putting them in Top 10 and giving Frank Zappa just an honorably mention?...
are you serious?
Oh and Mars Volta, Primus and Mike Patton with his various projects definitely deserve at least a mention in this list
Primus And Mike patton not prog bands
Primus is mediocore
@@HeraclitorisScroll Primus sucks.
@Vlad the Inhaler Mars Volta, Frank Zappa, Can >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Coheed & Cambria.
And Camel, Marillion, Procol Harum... I mean, WTF?
clearly, prog-rock is not their specialty...please do a little more research before making these sort of lists.
It's about money..this is a TERRIBLE List. Frank Zappa
Yes, they have too many newer bands and not enough of the classics for my liking.
And where thé fuck is The Mars Volta
They need to make 2 lists. Prog rock and prog metal. If they did, bands like Alan Parsons Project, Camel, Gentle Giant, and Frank Zappa would have been on there
They got #1 right at least.
“Hey man I’m in a rock band!”
“That’s dope man, what do you play?”
“The flute!” 😂😂😂
What do you play the skin flute???🤣🤣🤣
You say that as if that's a bad thing or something.
imagine "The Musical Box" without the flute .... When Gabriel was gone, they never played it again, because nobody else could play the freakin flute.
It's not a list without Camel and Marillion. Progressive Rock and Progressive Metal are different genres. Yes, Genesis, Rush, Camel, Jethro Tull, King Crimson.. these are prog rock bands.
Ahanda bir türk, koskoca jethro tull 10. Olmuş, aptal watchmojo prog rock ve metal arasındaki farkı bile bilmiyor... Tool, dream theater falan koymuşlar listeye xd.
Totally but the progressive alt rock is also amazingI...you can love both!🙂
Is king crimson also art rock?
@@ranarm6980 listen the track “cirkus”. It is one of the perfect definitions of art rock.
ok ash renton
The following bands should have been included:
- Supertramp
- Camel
- Marillion
- Opeth
I agree with Pink Floyd being no. 1, also I think King Crimson should be in a higher position.
Finally someone who appreciates supertramp
P.f.m.
Standards and taste are subjective. To make my point; As far as song writing and compositional structures skills go, Haken are a better band than Dream Theater.
Also, Marillion are considered the forefathers of Neo-Prog as a genre. The best of that scene, in my extremely bias opinion, is the band, Frost*. Literally, my favorite band. Easily.
Barclay james harvest,, Caravan,
R.I.P Keith Emerson.. :(
My first musical hero as a teenager ... poor guy, believing his life is worthless because of his poor, injured hands and tendons. I really felt for him.

Top four in any order: Yes, ELP, Tull, Floyd, then King Crimson, Genesis, etc. Yes, I'm an old guy in my late 60's, so I saw 'em all in concert. But I can understand how Tool and others are favorites of people younger than me. I've never been able to acquire what I know is near-universal love for Geddy Lee. Everyone to their own taste, of course.

Agree but in any order : Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis ( Gabriel Era , the era with Collins is pop music )
Floyd is not prog and they sure as shit aren’t better than King Crimson…just sayin🤷♂️

Gebesis
One of the shittiest presentations of King Crimson (basically one of the first ever prog-rock bands).
they basically showed the only songs by them which aren't progressive (except for Elephant talk) ...I think they done it beacuse if people heard songs like "Starless" "Epitaph" or "Construkction of light" there'll be more complaining why they are not #1 (and rightly so) ...
+DX7036 What pisses me even more is that they didn't even MENTION Cream. Their "Wheels Of Fire" album is as early prog as it can get. Do you imagine bands like Rush and Yes even existing without the influence of Cream?! WatchMojo's guys must be either retarded or really uninformed. I hope it's the first option, because it's somehow easier to handle.
well I dont really think them as being "prog" but they certainly are more complex than those "Coheed and Cambria" (who I didnt know until now), and they also don't include Focus , Camel , Gentle Giant , Kansas and lots more...again they only pick up the most popular one , but the fact is we're talking about prog music and popularity has nothing to do with it , is just about the music
DX7036 Cream are an early example of really professional jazz/blues/pop musicians coming together and making something new, heavy, original and unique. I'm not even discussing their musicianship. Ginger Baker - one of the first drummers to have a second bass drum. Cream were taking music loudness to a completely different level: it's one thing when you play a musically complex composition with a standard (of the time) rock equipment, it's a completely different experience when you attack the audience with a million Watts of sound, produced by (the newly emerged) Marshalls. And Jack Bruce's compositions were really complex, multilayered, filled with irregular rhytms.... Cream may be perceived as "just that 60s hippie band", but they are more prog than some of the bands on this list.
DX7036 And you're right about ommited bands. I would add such bands as Egg, Faust, Tangerine Dream, lots of the so-called "Krautrock" movement... This is just a list, compiled by people, who really don't know music that well.
Pink Floyd is also number one on there Psychedelic Band list, just shows how diverse and brilliant they are
they are English geniuses!!

Look, Coheed and Cambria are a cool band, but there's no way they deserve to be in the top 10 ahead of Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Gentle Giant, and many others.
Elliot York Cameron yep agreed
Strongly disagree
Don't worry my friend. Marillion is still on of the best progressive rock band of all time. If Coheed is there, it's because Gentle and many others was there!
Marillion gets no love her in the states
Is it very wrong of me to think that Coheed and Cambria is not even prog? More powermetal, or just... metal.
Dream Theater is Progressive Metal.
If I die tomorrow, I'll be ok because I believe that every gospel song is progressive metal!!! DT have enough lame rock songs to blur the boundaries.
Overall the list seems to have some bands that could be classified as metal while leaving out some noteworthy prog rock bands. Their criteria i'm not so sure about.
Tecnically Tool is prog metal too.
Idk, I would give their spot to Camel and PFM and create a whole new list for prog metal(and give the top spot to Opeth, of course :) )
They said at the beginning that progressive metal counts for the list too.
Metal is a rock sub-genre smartass.

I've 100% respect for other bands listed here. They are full of legends but compared to Dream Theatre, nah they will be like as students.. Even insanely better musical and technical bands like Symphony X and Opeth are students in front of DT..

Opeth tries to copy all the seventies band and yet people think they are giants. Opeth should keep doing one thing at a time, trying to play prog and death at the same time doesn't work for them anymore with their mild approach. If they stick to prog rock which most people do not know what it is then the band will certainly release something close to Selling England by the Pound or Starless.

With the amount of descriptive words Mojo threw at Tool it would seem that no one at Mojo really cares for Tool. With the amount of thought Mojo gave all the other great bands it seems very minuscule in comparison. When I commented on the Top 10 Rage Against the Machine songs regarding if Mojo would make a Top Ten Tool songs they said it was in the works. That was quite a while ago. Edit, not saying I'm not happy that Tool even made this list. Just seriously don't think spot 9 should have been their spot.
They certainly deserve a better spot than Coheed & Cambria.
Well Dan did mention that it was among his favorite bands in 'What's your Mojo'
I find it silly that a band like Coheed and Cambria can nudge them out on the list. Does anyone still listen to that band?
Tyler Durica Yes! they are a little bit more relevant since they still put out records, books, and comics more often. I miss Tool though but I want them to take their time so that the next album is a masterpiece.
MusicReviewFication I wish Tool wasn't plagued by so many legal issues then we wouldn't have to wait over seven years for an album T.T
Gentle Giant, the consummate Prog Rock band, and what about Focus?
Jethro Tull Needs To be higher.
And Queensryche Only honorable Mention.
Where's GENTLE GIANT?!
I came here for gentle giant. Saw this comment. Disliked. Left the video.
They were amazing!!! I only found out a few months back. What have I been missing all those years
It's not a terrible list overall, but indeed to not have Gentle Giant on it, even as an honorable mention, while you have Tool and other BS on it is just criminal. GG may not have been "popular" as stated as criteria up front, but they were the definition of prog, and the most talented band I've ever seen.
@@garycitro1674 I agree with your comment. Gentle Giant had quite an impact on me in the seventies. They played the academy of music on 14th street.I seen them on the king biscuit flower hour and they just blew me away.Great band.sad they were not that popular in New York,I still have all of there albums on vinyl.I am addicted to the band. They are definitely the definition of progressive rock, the most talented band ever.
@@montygreen6228 Hey Monty, I saw them at the academy as well! I lived on Long Island and whenever they toured I'd see them in the city and also at the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead. Towards the end, the band fizzled trying to get that big hit single. A few of the members still do conventions and stuff, really nice guys and you can look that up on their homepage.
Saw most of them in concert. I miss going to concerts😢
YES
RUSH
GENESIS
KANSAS
JETHRO TULL
(They are No 1) The Rest is Up 2 yaaa 😁😁😁😁
KANSAS
I didn't know Kansas is Prog Rock
First 3 or 4 Kansas albums are very proggy. Check out Song for America and Leftoverture.
>Tries to show how King Crimson is epic.
>Plays live versions of its 3rd squad.
wtf
Wilczurin Best formation though
Naa Vitor, the best incarnations are probably the Lark Tongues one and the Islands one, the first and the Discipline are just the most overrated
El estimado cabeza de glande You mean the most tight
I know, what the heck! There's plenty of 70's clips to show the various lineups.
Belew, Levin? Yeah
1. Pink Floyd
2. King Crimson
3. Yes
4. Jethro Tull
5. Rush
Where are Opeth and Van Der Graaf Generator?
Coheed and Cambria and no Kansas? Kansas were huge in the 70s. They wrote amazing music and were technically at the top of their game. These lists are sometimes disappointing.
Zappa should get more than just an Honorable mention
Zappa and Beefheart were often much more about progression than many of the classic Prog bands themselves
Top 3 for sure
Zappa included so many genres in his music (the man was a Genius)!...
Zappa is the very definition ofprog rock
@@DbladeMedic Zappa is the very definition of music Genius!....
This is Prog for an American... not an European
Not all of these bands are "American"
Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, and Pink Floyd are English. Rush are Canadian. So obviously Obi Wan needs to put down the light saber and study up a bit before posting.
Sadly, the US really didn't have any major entries in the original flowering of Prog. We had psychedelia of course, which has various similarities, but it's not the same. Some things that, say, The Doors did were very close to progressive rock. Zappa, who was mentioned here, I don't consider progressive rock either. He was sort of his own complete universe really. For a brief period there Styx was almost a serious prog rock band, though closer to pop-prog.
Ultimately, most of the later US bands that some would call prog are not in my opinion, they are more metal than prog. Tool I'll give a pass, though they are extremely heavy most of the time as well.
For american listeners. Saga i.e. is a canadian band, that deserves to be in that list more than most of the others.
And FM as well, and they're SO underrated.
Is that why Pink Floyd won #1? Because they're so American? How about when the Germans bombed Cleveland Ohio in The Wall. THAT was great.
My list:
1. Pink Floyd
2. Rush
3. Yes
4. Tool
5. Porcupine Tree
6. Opeth
7. Dream Theater
8. King Crimson
9. Genesis
10. Focus
Great, now I have hundreds of hours of music to seek out.
There list is crap, read the comments and you will get a better idea of what to listen to.
right on🤘
King Crimson should be at top 2. Why have you shown only their late period, not classic like starless, epitaph and larks tongues in aspic. And you must be crazy if you think that dream theater is better than king crimson and yes. And wtf is Coheed and Cambria, where is Camel, Van der Graaf Generator, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and others?
I agree
+Руслан Япаров Porcupine Tree was in the honourable mentions
+Руслан Япаров In The Court Of The Crimson King was one of the first progressive rock albums and it's an excellent one too! King Crimson were one of the first progressive rockers! Why are they only at number 6? Also, where's Supertramp?
I totally agree that Frank Zappa should be on here, that is if I overlook one thing (That clearly Watchmojo doesn't know the definition of. A band is a collective of people! In some Watchmojo lists, they clearly don't know the definition of a band. I facepalm so hard sometimes. Also, I don't really like Dream Theatre. Finally, I don't see how you can put Emerson, Lake and Palmer only two spots behind King Crimson (who should at least be in the top 3). Emerson, Lake and Palmer wouldn't exist without King Crimson!
+Руслан Япаров I am the only person that doesn't seem to be but hurt by this list. Suck it internet!
My Top 15 Prog Rock Bands Of All Time
#15 The Moody Blues
#14 Frank Zappa
#13 Procol Harum
#12 Tool
#11 Primus
#10 Electric Light Orchestra
#9 Kansas
#8 Emerson, Lake, & Palmer
#7 Jethro Tull
#6 King Crimson
#5 Yes
#4 Genesis
#3 Dream Theater
#2 Rush
#1 Pink Floyd
+Brian Thomas That's a good list. I would take Primus out and add Porcupine Tree
Great list
Thanks Bob and Okrogsveta- Primus is a fav and I just have a soft spot for them. I do love Porcupine Tree, though,
It's all personal preference. I like Primus - just have become a huge fan of Steven Wilson. Grew up loving typical art rock/prog - ELP, Yes, Genesis. Not sure I've ever liked anyone as much as Steven Wilson.
I like Wilson a lot too. My favorite person in prog rock is Neil Peart, though.
My favorites
1. Yes
2. Calcinha Preta
3. Genesis
Kkkk
Pink Floyd is the only band that could beat RUSH for the number 1 spot on a list like this.
Big fan of both of those bands.👍
Gentle Giant?
YES #5 ???
Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Opeth and Tool are the best
Abid Hassan I think you're saying that simply because they fall on the progressive metal side of the spectrum. You're forgetting bands such as Rush,Genesis,Yes,King Crimson and Pink Floyd.
@@ansems3136 I think I'll need to come back to this video many times. People are recommending lots of apparently interesting stuff in the comments
Faves from my youth:
1 Yes
2 ELP
3 Genesis
4 Supertramp
5 Camel
6 PFM
7 Vangels
8 Nektar
9 Jon Andersen
10 ?
I'm assuming you've heard the Jon and Vangelis stuff, then? Cuz that's pretty awesome.
frissonic / Jon and Vangelis created some beautiful music together. Didn’t want to be redundant, so I didn’t list them separately, but their music was definitely unique.
I can't for the life of me fathom why anyone would want to illustrate the best progressive rock bands in history with so much footage of those bands' largely unrepresentative pop songs, as demonstrated by many of the tracks selected to showcase Genesis, ELP and Yes, for example. It's quite bizarre that the compiler couldn't find more progressive examples to truly reflect those bands' music.
10. All
9. Of
8. These
7. Bands
6. Are
5. Great
4. Prog
3. Rock
2. Bands
1. Yes
Yes is fantastic but I wouldn't put them at one
Yes
Correction:
1. King Crimson
@@MultiAwesomeboy24 I would put them at number 1, if anything just for Chris Squire's bass tone alone ! haha
How is YES number 5?!?!?!
Ashamed
They are the definition of PROG
Agree !!
All mentioned are incredible musicians but there is only YES!!!
Yes is so fucking overrated in my opinion. Load of shit for the most part - spare a couple songs and the album drama -.
Agree, to the nth degree. When people who don’t know prog from bluegrass think of prog, YES are who comes to mind.
And still they forgot Kansas!
Gentle Giant are by far, the epitomy of musicianship; the guys can litterally play each others instruments at will. True troubadours.
My list:
YES
Genesis
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Moody Blues
Jethro Tull
Renaissance
Pink Floyd
King Crimson
Marillion
Kansas
You should have written ''Progressive rock AND METAL bands" in the title
Yeah! I hate it when people still categorize Metal as a subgenre of Rock only because it's played with the same instruments - but it sounds totally different!
no way are tool a prog band they are techicnical metal as are kings x and voi vod
Tool is easy to explain: Art ;)
@@BucketFullGamesmetal is a sub genre of rock
@@christian9146 no it's not. Period 🤘
Where is Focus?
Are they the guys that did "Hocus Pocus?'
One band make one of the most iconic bass lines ever in 5/8+7/8 and only get no 9...
My personal list
1- tool
2- king crimson
3- dream theater
4- mastodon
5- yes
6- rush
7- opeth
8- genesis
9- pink floyd
10- porcupine tree
ZeManeiro of the Grave i agree with your 1#
Rush was doing 5/8 and 7/8 bass lines a long time before tool was...Also, how does playing in a 5/8 or 7/8 time signature make a band better than everyone else? It doesn't. It's just a time signature. It just means they can count to 5, then to 7, then to 5, then to 7, etc...
@@christiandubeau20 I didn't say 5/8 and 7/8, I said 5/8+7/8, and not Geddy Lee bass lines feels as good for me as schism
And for the second question, it simple does not, but we are talking about prog rock in this video, so...
@@zemaneiro292 Using 5/8+7/8 is not revolutionary. It's been done many times before. "Dance of Eternity" by Dream Theater (for example) does it in some sections. So does "Anyone Who Had A Heart" by Burt Bacharach. Both of those songs were written before "Schism." And I don't see how "talking about prog rock" suddenly propels a band who uses 5/8+7/8 time signatures to a higher spot on a list. That being said, if you like Tool more than the other bands on the list, more power to you. Different people have different tastes in music, and that's cool.
@@christiandubeau20 I don't think you got it
one of prof rock things is to make odd stuff sounds great, and schism is one of the most iconic bass lines ever, done in a odd time
I said my top 10 over there, Im not trying to impose my opinion on anyone else, just saying my own opinion, you commented saying my argument for my opinion was wrong and I corrected you
1) Genesis
2) Steven Wilson/ Porcupine Tree
3) Yes
4) Anathema
5)Katatonia
That's my top 5.
Since you like Katatonia and Anathema, you may like X-Japan. Try their following songs: Art of Life, Rose of Pain and Silent Jealousy
THANK YOU for not putting PF and Rush on your list (though I wish KC was on it)
@@playlistmaker90125 bro it was 4 years ago. my tastes have changed.
1) genesis
2)porcupine tree
3)haken
4)the contortionist
5)kc
plus i'd never put pink floyd in a prog rock roaster lol
Did ya'll completely forget about Muse or what? I don't know that they'd deserve like 1 or 2, but Muse deserves atleast like 6 or 7. Better than some of these that I've never even heard of.
Muse sucks..
I wouldn't call most of their stuff progressive, mainly space-rock and alt-rock.
John Doge Space Rock? Never heard of it, but it does kind of fit...
I.Might.Be.Drew
Admittedly, I don't fully know the meaning of space rock but it just fits with their style on Origin of Symmetry and Black Holes & Revelations.
John Doge Space rock is some kind of fusion between prog rock and psychedelic rock I think, so in the end Muse is kinda related to prog
Not that they necessarily should have been included in this list, because they're not as big yet, but Thank You Scientist is INCREDIBLE. Tom Monda shredding on a fretless guitar is insane.
Some modern bands to consider: Chon, Polyphia, Don Caballero, Zombi, Sinoia Caves, The Mars Volta, Covet
When Frank Zappa is a "Honorable Mention"- the list has lost credibility.
Cierto, debió ser el número 1, aunque en lo personal es difícil porque king Crimson también es fuerte.
