Great content. We are considering Yale for pre-med and issue of safety came up. How is the safety at Yale and neighborhood around Yale. Did you feel unsafe at any time? Also, as a premed did you find it was difficult to keep your GPA high (grade deflation) for entry into medical school compared to it you went to a state school or non-ivy. Thanks.

During my time at Yale/living in New Haven, I didn’t have any safety-related concerns. The campus police are all over & the “dorms” are all gated and require key card access.

Per premed - can’t comment on how I would’ve performed at other universities as I’ve only attended one. I do think medical schools factor in the name/rigor of your undergrad (ex: 3.7 @Yale vs 3.7 @state school will likely be viewed differently). Ultimately, it’s a combo of good undergrad grades + MCAT (standardized exams) that will paint the full picture - hope this helps!

I’m from New York City and I was wondering what the social life was like in New Haven, what did people do in their spare time? Did you ever feel stuck at home and work? How much spare time do students have? Or are classes just so fun that spare time goes hand in hand with what you do for class?

Hey Nicolas! Great questions - i'll try my best to share my perspectives. Social life is great within the Yale community (lot of really cool people from different parts of the world / lot of club activities & volunteering / greek life), outside of Yale, the city of New Haven is quite small / not that much going on. I was pre-med at Yale + juggling full-time research + part-time jobs, so didn't have the most free time, but had plenty of time to hang with friends on weekends & played a lot of sports! Spare time depends on your major, what you have going on, and how rigorously you push yourself academically. It really varies, but if you're efficient & prioritize your hobbies / free time, you can easily find balance in my opinion. I really liked my classes & learned a lot. The professors care a lot about what they teach which in turn makes the learning experience that much more fun. Feel free to drop additional questions below - hope this helps!
