@@stalman Just a tip, try shooting in ProRes and then edit in Photo's app and set the sharpness to 1. Even though it shows 0 as default, I'm completely sure it's a value a lot higher, the annoying iPhone sharpening goes away - and it sends a compressed file over AirDrop that looks great.
Thank you for giving props to the default camera app. I thought I was going nuts because filmic pro was, in my opinion, unnecessarily complex for my simple needs. Thanks again!
Old-school guy here. Shot documentaries in the 90s. Watching lots of CZcams videos trying to decide the best platform to get back into shooting. This video is the best produced and most informative I have watched in several months! 10 stars!!! Thanks and subscribed ;)

I just found Cinema P3 Camera Pro which is a fantastic option to Filmic, which went to a subscription model for $50 a year. Cinema P3 has full manual mode, log recording too.
Hi Tyler, this is what I needed. I have started a CZcams channel and I was thinking to make the most of my iPhone 12 before acquiring any gear. I was recording indoor, close to a window with good sunlight but I was getting a strange image quality. Now I know it was the HDR option! Thanks a lot! I love your videos and I really want to say that I admire your skills and style. Thanks a lot for all the effort you put into helping others! 😊
@@stalman I've been shooting with it since I got the iPhone 13pro a year ago, but I just turned it off after watching video, hoping it'll save me some time in my workflow. I can't remember if you mentioned it in the video or not, but when would you want to incorporate it into your workflow? Situations where the lighting is really tough (golden hour, but also some shady areas, etc?)
Thanks a lot for the feedback, there is a long way for me to master the basics, so the simpler I can make it now the further I will get with less effort. Great!
My gosh, Tyler, the video footage is delicious! It didn't hurt that the skater is so freaking photogenic. Thanks so much for demoing the 3x lens the way you did - utterly wonderful in Action and Cinematic modes for faces. Loved the .5 footage, too, ultrawides are wonderful! Cameras have come a long way since I borrowed my old man's 1939 Zeiss Ikon f/2.8 folding camera in 1966. Now that I'm a clueless, know-nothing video beginner at 81, this was so helpful and appealing - I absorbed it through my pores.
Excellent and informative video! The effort you put into these videos doesn't go unnoticed. Really well edited and explained. Thanks Tyler! Appreciate it.
There's something about these videos that makes me feel like a kid sat in the back of class watching some super cool show on my phone while the boring supply teacher is talking in the "background" haha.
Disagree about 60p being only for slow-mo and otherwise looks awful because it's video game-like. If you pan / walk around a lot and pan quite quickly (even with a gimbal), 60p is pretty much a must as the camera movement will be much less eye/brain-wear-inducing.
I know a lot of people share your preference, but I've got to stand by 24 or 30 being the only frame rates I can recommend. There are virtually no professionals mastering to faster rates and most people perceive as a soap opera or live sports aesthetic.
@@stalman Yup, I definitely know the cons of 60p (or, for that matter, 48p, see Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey.) I wouldn't use it for artistic purposes either. However, for strictly event shooting when one knows the end video won't be shown in cinemas etc. but is only handled as a documentary etc. viewed over CZcams, 60p is a great choice if the footage contains a lot of camera movement. Fluidity at 60p is just far better for the eyes / brain than at 30p, let alone 24p.
@@mostlyfinnishlifeeventsand5112 Overall 60fps for normal speed scenes just looks bad, it lacks that natural blur we are all used to and it gives the shot that soap opera look that just doesn’t look natural at all, no wonder even to this date the standard in cinema still 24fps. High fps is meant for slowmo, and that’s where you see it being used with the best results, in videogame like you mentioned is a totally different scenario, you are dealing with something that you are interacting and quick response makes the experience better since any lag in n between your input the the character reaction can ruin the gameplay.
60fps is not for phones or even mobile camera as .60fps is for apsc / full frame cameras as we can change lens and we dont care for low light settings . Apsc /full frames lens are differrnt world comparing to phones/mobile cameras lens . On my 2nd channel personaly using 30 fps always . I hate iphone users thats are recording hdr video and everythihg is burned with brightness bcoz they see its fine on their phone and they dont watch their channel on TV . For me SoNY experia is best low light phone with HDR HLG . But that doesnt mean iphone sux as only apple have dolbybvision recording but not much ppl understand how HDR is working .
and yes, the 14Pro, thanks to the highly capable 1x sensor and downsampling, delivers relatively noise-free video even in dim light when shooting 4k60. Of course, 4k30 or 4k24 would be cleaner, but the, thanks to the high frame rate, fluidity is far more important for me than noise. And the 14PM is pretty much clean compared to most of the competition. This is why I'm no longer forced to reduce the framerate when there's little light, unlike with the iPhone 11. The latter is FAR noisier. (The above, obviously, only pertains to the 1x camera. The other two cameras (and even the 1x one when you use the 2x zoom) are far noisier.)

On my real cameras I’m conscious of shutter speed being double my frame rate for smooth slowmo video playback. Since the native iPhone camera app doesn’t allow shutter speed control, do you ever find your 60 fps or 120 fps to be jittery when slowed down in a typical 30fps project?
I’ve been hooked on LumaFusion for editing videos on my phone especially since the default editor can’t compress/change resolution. Only thing I don’t like is that you can’t scale custom resolutions.

I started to like the size and weight but recognised that most tests on YT are about the 14 pro ... there must be a reason. What's the elephant in the room?
I’ve wondered what resolution people leave their phone on by default. Most of my videos are just tiny clips to show a friend something, not a fancy video or lifelong memory, so I record in 720p for the smaller file size. And usually 1080p outside of that. I only shoot 4K if it’s something intended as an edited video.
What if I want to shoot a short film at 4k 24fps but also wanted to include slow motion? Shooting 4k 60fps and slowing it down to 24fps doesn’t sound right.
Thank you Tyler for this great overview and all the guidance you've provided over the years. Question: There are two segments in this video that talk about stabilization, standard and Action Mode. Both segments have a side by side comparison to no stabilization, which looks like it's shot with a third party app because there's less detail in the highlights but the skin tones are consistent. At the beginning of each segment DeVanté is standing still and then begins to move. On the standard stabilization example you can see the apple camera app's aggressive dynamic tone mapping change the skin tones frame by frame. In the Action Mode it appears less aggressive. Do you think this is because Action Mode crops in more and therefore there's less tonal variance in each frame or is there something fundamentally different about how dynamic tone mapping is applied in Action Mode? And just a general comment (no response needed). It's a bummer that Apple doesn't provide a compression option for the native camera app that's somewhere between the current HEVC bitrates and ProRes 422 HQ.
