The Downfall of Georgetown Basketball

  • Georgetown basketball used to be one of the premier programs in college basketball. Under the late John Thompson and led by star center Patrick Ewing, they went onto 3 national championship games in 4 seasons. But recently the Hoyas have been coached by Patrick Ewing however that success looks to be a long thing of the past.

    Back when John Thompson Sr. was coach they recruited a mix of hungry inner city and southern kids from poor backgrounds. They were alpha males instead of the beta males you see these days. Also, the Big East was so great back then that the conference toughened you up for the NCAA tournament. Now I see people in the comments below saying they should leave their conference so they can have it easier even though their conference is nowhere near as dominant as it was back in the day.

    The unfortunate thing with Josh Leblanc is that he got kicked off for sexual assault allegations that got dismissed like days after he was kicked off. I know this because I knew about Josh in high school and I graduated with someone else who got caught up in that mess, Galen Alexander, though in Alexander’s case this is the second time he got kicked off a team, the first being an incident when he was at LSU, which is ironically where Josh Leblanc ended up, for breaking an unspecified team rule. Alexander ended up at Texas Southern.

    • @formerlyknownaseasrob
      @formerlyknownaseasrob Před 3 lety +1

      Actually the thing in Galen’s LSU case was that he, along with big man freshman Myan Kir (something like that), was suspended indefinitely and pretty much encouraged to transfer out (so basically the same thing but without the official “kicking out”)

  • @Anniehits

    1. They didn't fire John III with Patrick already "in mind" for the job--they offered the head coaching position to several people before finally asking Patrick.
    2. DC players--not Patrick--made Georgetown into the Heart Attack Hoyas:: Big Sky Shelton, BayBay Duren, Sleepy Floyd, etc. I hate it when ppl sleep on DC basketball
    3. Georgetown needs to go back to recruiting dc players--the program has almost no ties to the community now--unlike when big John was coaching--and most of DC's best high school players now end up going to other schools. Makes no sense.

I remember the 2006/07 season fondly. the team made it all the way to the final 4 we had all our starters coming back the next year with the exception of Jeff Green. Since 2006/07 though the team has been plagued by horribly disappointing seasons. the 08 and 13 were the last times they won anything in the conference. They haven't even won the Big East tourny since that season and have only played in the final 2 times. They haven't even been to the sweet 16 in so long! it's frustrating. Still I consider myself a loyal fan and i still root for the Hoyas.

    Great stuff. Ewing had the Hoyas trending in the right direction. His first year was a 500 season after the team had a losing record the year before. His second year he had them in the NIT. 2020 was the year that was supposed to be the leap to a possible NCAA Tournament bid but the wheels fell off when key players left or were kicked off during the season. That set them back but possibly the recruiting class coming in next year gets them back on track.

    Being a Georgetown fan has been hard lately. Last year, I went to the bahammas and watch the Hoyas played in the preseason, and we were by far the best team there (including Texas Tech and Memphis). However, James Akinjo didn’t mold well with the team and Josh LeBlanc got in some trouble. After that, our team fell apart. We went from almost beating Duke at the garden to losing to Greensboro at home. I think Pat is gonna turn it around and our upcoming recruiting class for 2021 looks solid. Hopefully we can exceed expectations this year and play with a chip on our shoulder. Go Hoyas!

Pat's head coaching tenure has been underwhelming to say the least, I wasn't thrilled by the hire but I understand why they hired him. Losing Mac def hurts and idk what has to go wrong to have a talent like that walk out of the door. The losing has been frustrating and the conference reshaping back in 2013 didn't help either, compare that to another old Big East power like Villanova the schools have gone in complete opposite directions.

    Who told you that John Thompson got to Georgetown in '72 and they only got good 10 years once Ewing arrived?
    Under Thompson--AND BEFORE PATRICK--they went:
    12-14, 13-13, 18-10, 21-7, 19-9, 23-8, 24-5, 26-6, 20-12.
    Also, I'm not sure you can say "physically impose you."
    Good luck.

    So Thompson hired in 72 and finally went to a Final Four in 82, what happened in those 9 years BE- Before Ewing? Five NCAA's, and an Elite Eight. After AI left, his teams were OK. Thompson didn't leave a cupboard full of talent when he left. Georgetown, will find that when trying to rebuild a once proud program, you hire the best coach! Not a coach who had ties to the past regime! I know this example is football, but Nick Saban had nothing to do with Alabama. But, he got hired and has led them to countless National Titles.

      @@TheMeefive Getting hot in 4-5 days is nothing. It happens. He went 7-9 in the Big East regular season this year. Yeah, that's an impressive 8th place! Let's see if he can actually win a regular season title.

      @@Lawomenshoops What team could lose Akinjo, McClung and Leblanc in back to back seasons and not have struggles. That was a major part of the offense.
      8th place? They were projected to be last. Ewing did an amazing job getting this squad jelling at the right time.

    • @Lawomenshoops
      @Lawomenshoops Před 3 lety

      @@TheMeefive He has been there 2-4 years, I forget exactly. Coaches have good starts, and then plateau or have losing years, see Thompson III. You can make all the excuses about losing the player, but it's not like those players came back in the BE tourney. His team got hot at the right time. A week, doesn't make him a great coach.

    • @TheMeefive
      @TheMeefive Před 3 lety

      @@Lawomenshoops It's a legit excuse. Akinjo is scoring 17 ppg for Arizona and McClung is scoring 15.7 for Texas Tech. They were Georgetown's starting backcourt and top 2 scorers. Ewing was forced to start Dante Harris, an unheralded freshman, in place of his top scorer. The reason they got hot at the right time is because Ewing made the necessary adjustments.
      Nobody's calling him a great coach. It's too early for that. But he did an amazing job getting his team to a Big East championship win.

    re. john Thompson III.
    what many people do not understand is a "Jr." is NOT the equivalent to a "II".
    So, If a father wants a Jr. that is fine. However this Jr. is not a II. So, The father can have another son and name him II, or the Jr. can have a son and name him II.
