Synopsis
This is the first special drama reviving the character of Nemuri Kyoshiro, played by Masakazu Tamura, following his popularity in the TV series. Showcasing the Engetsu swordsmanship style without CG, the drama captures Kyoshiro's cold precision. On a rainy night, Kyoshiro encounters a samurai's son and learns of a troubled household. He intervenes to save the mother, Shizu (Hiromi Takikawa), from her husband's attack, accidentally causing the husband's death. Kyoshiro prevents Shizu from suicide and agrees to protect her. He soon finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy involving official secrets and is injured while defending Shizu. Seeking refuge in a temple, Kyoshiro discovers Shizu's past humiliation by Ieyoshi, the Shogun's heir. He learns from Senjuro Takebe, a servant of the former shogun Mizuno Echizennomori, about the corrupt influence of Sano Higo-mori (Kei Sato) on Ieyoshi. Determined to resolve the situation, Kyoshiro sets out for Kyoto to confront the true Ieyoshi.
About Nemuri Kyoshiro
Nemuri Kyoshiro, the main character of Shibata Renzaburo's samurai novel series, began serialization in 1956 in Weekly Shincho as Nemuri Kyoshiro Burai Hikae. This series, alongside Gomi Yasuyuki's Yagyu Bugeicho sparked a samurai boom and led to numerous adaptations in film, television, and theatre.
Kyoshiro is a complex character, blending the nihilistic swordsman archetype, originated from Kyokutei Bakin's Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, with Shibata's distinctive dandyism. Born of a Portuguese Jesuit and a Japanese woman, Kyoshiro embodies a sense of nihilism and a cold brutality, often killing without remorse. He carries the famed Musou Masamune sword, historically linked to Toyotomi Hideyori, and employs a unique sword technique known as Engetsu Sappo. As noted by film critic Sato Tadao, this series breaks from traditional Kabuki, where romantic roles are reserved for handsome men and heroic figures typically avoid romantic entanglements, contrasting with Western ideals of chivalry.

Here is some interesting trivia on Masakazu Tamura. When Raizo Ichikawa died, Daiei tried frantically to find a replacement. They found Hiroki Matsukata who then did two films as Nemuri. The interesting trivia is that Mr. Tamura appeared in one of those two films but as an ENEMY of Nemuri. It was then that a producer noticed Tamura and felt he would be good as Nemuri, so the result is this film you see here.

Ultimately, it didn't save Daiei Film, a giant in the industry that produced Rashoman, Ugetsu, Sanjo The Bailliff, Gates of Hell, the Zatoichi series and many more. They never really found a suitable box-office replacement for Raizo Ichikawa and went into bankrupcy in 1971. It's a shame Ichikawa died so young. If he had lived into his 70's, we could be watching "Shinobi no Mono 137: Wheelchair Ninja" or "Sleepy Eyes of Death 119: Grandfather's Sword of Doom".
WOW!! I absolutely Found this Video, to be a Great Movie. To show a Man of Integrity, and Honor! Sadly today We do not see that kind of Man anymore! To me a Samari, isn't only about Katanas', and Martial Arts! It is about an Ideal to Serve with living an Honorable Life! Please do not get me Wrong, about the training of a Samari, their Ability to fight is Legendary! Japanese Culture in it's purest form is Amazing, and Admirable! Thank You for this Video! I love watching Masakazu Tamura as Nemuri Kyoshiro. As an actor, he seems to have a genuine noble aura about him. There was another Nemuri movie called "The man with no tomorrow" on CZcams sometime ago. A pity it's no longer available.

Nemuri Kyoshiro was one of my favorite anti-hero samurai characters, and Masakazu Tamura in this film and the other four made-for-TV films was a worthy successor to Ichikawa Raizo.
Tamura even looks a lot like Raizo.

Kyoshiro Nemuri atones for all the sins h has ever comitted throughout his life by saving the mother and the son and saving the Shogun and leaving the mother though he loves her for the sake of the well-being of the son and goes off to join Zatoichi into the clear blue yonder!

This 1998 episode titled "The Woman Who Loved Kyoshiro" in the 5 part series. It was 20 years later that Tamura made the next and final episode. Three years later he died of a heart attack.

Tamura's Nemuri Kyoshiro is different in motivation and practice in every metric from Raizo Ichikawa's 'Son of Satan' mode. His ' I was born under a bad star' is such a subtle change, it's very tasteful.
Thanx a lot: Everything is excellent in this movie by the fighting side, and also as a high level samurai love story in blue.
Doesn't matter that jmasterTamura is a bit different / but similar great as master Ishikawa.

Masakazu only did the leaning backward stance in these movie series. He never did it in the Kyoshiro series in the 70's. Also, his Kamon/crest here is a mixed of Christian crosses that looks like a mesh compared to the crescent moon crest in the 70's TV series.

This doesn't seem to be the real name. Looks like it's Nemuri Kyoshirō (眠狂四郎), a TV movie from 1989. It's the first TV special after the 1972-1973 Nemuri Kyōshirō TV series. There are 4 other TV special movies that follow this one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemuri_Ky%C5%8Dshir%C5%8D_(TV_series)
It would helpful if there was the real name in both Japanese (and an official English translation if there is one) as well as the year of production. There are a ton of Nemuri Kyoshirō movies and TV shows, so it's hard to keep which is which straight if there's no information here.

Too much killing in this film. It gets ridiculous.
The only thing I am wondering is about the title of Full Moon Killing for this one. He only used the technique once to kill someone in the entire movie.
Maybe only for those opponents worthy of seeing his Full Moon technique.
