Top video. Maybe next year I’ll get up for a run….literally. Great shots of the north coast too. No more scenic half marathon.

    Lovely work as always Stephen.
As for the race, a lot’s already been said so I won’t trample on old ground, it’s significant though that many of our club, like me did not return this year.
I think the term “elite” can sometimes create a disparity, if you focus on the few at the expense of the many it can cause difficulties. That aside, everyone obviously had a great time and you captured it beautifully.

    • @StephenJReid

      Thanks George!
What actually are the issues people had with the race? Maybe I didn't really hear most of them as I'm not from Larne.
The only negative feedback I heard on the day after the race was about the heat and the final hill. Everyone I spoke to was hugely positive.
I know there were issues last year with the crush at the start (I was in the middle of it). They fixed that this year with the playing fields start, although it did mean having to add that small hill at the end.
But I'm not sure I follow what the problem with the elites is?
I just assumed it's a requirement of the World Athletics Elite label that it has to be a separate race?
The only problem I could see was that having two races does mean everything takes longer.
From my point of view as a very average runner, the elites bring the media and more attention on the area and NI as a whole. As well as giving kids a chance of meeting running "celebs" and maybe inspiring a new generation. Creates more of a buzz around the event.
Long term that can only be good for growing the sport locally and increasing the local profile.
Personally my focus is always more on the mass race and the everyday runner as that's who I am and who I aim to encourage. So this vlog always focuses more on that experience.

Last year was poor form Stephen, corralled into a tightly packed road area where we foundered for almost 45 mins, a number of people distressed because they’d no access to toilets at that point.
This one’s my fault, not being from Larne either, I didn’t know, nor were we warned, that half of the town car park was pay n display….£60 fine in the post.
Chatting to a few people who attended this year, cost of entry (to pay for elite entries?)versus crappy medal, no water until halfway and then none at the finish on a hot day, daft race start time n hanging about ( elites again?) and additional hills to facilitate, you’ve guessed it, a separate flatter elite course🙂
It’s not the fault of these superbly talented individuals, more the corporate approach of the organisers.
I’ve no figures so it’s anecdotal and may be inaccurate, but I’m told they struggled for entries and for marshals and when local clubs want to distance themselves, somethings up🙂

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před rokem

Thanks I’ll pass these on, obviously they know about the issues from last year.
The parking situation was definitely part of the race info at least this year. Maybe it was missed last year 🤷‍♂️
I think the reason the mass race had that extra hill was because the start had moved so they had to make up distance somewhere rather than coming down the promenade.
I’ve seen some of the comments online from a few people but honestly wasn’t the impression I got on the day this year.
Maybe those who weren’t happy didn’t hang around.
Anyway, I really will pass these on to the organisers. It’s pretty much a husband and wife team that plans and organises most of the event.

It easy to snipe at organisers Stephen(I’ve had my share of armchair critics over the years) and I don’t want to upset anyone, I’m sure everyone did their v best and no doubt the event will grow from strength to strength.
Keep rolling out the great content!

@@georgeb.311 It was a really hot day and another water station would have been welcome. But I was offered 2 bottles of water at the end within minutes and turned one away. I finished about 2:10:00 so they didn't run out. maybe timing issue? The hill at the end was a challenge/surprise for sure but as a first timer (from Southern England so not a local) I thought it was really well run. Did the Great North Run last year and appreciated the smaller numbers of runners. I didn't mind the 11:00 start and you didn't need to spend ages in the pens. Thought it was a lovely event.
I parked at the Caterpillar factory and nice to get free parking. Easy route in from my direction.

Iam in my second week of running after a 15 yr break(had serious rta, knackered my knee).
Iam (don't laugh),3k daily, iam sweating and wondering how long it takes to get beyond this.Seems like I never ran before,I could do 21k then.
Also, how long did it take you to get to long distance trail running level?

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před rokem

Don’t worry Alan! It took me 6 months to run 1 miles when I first started running! It’s never come easy to me and there are times every year when I find 5miles hard to do. 3k daily is great! Although possibly you need some rest days in there. That’s 21k a week, basically a half marathon.
Nearly every year after Christmas I start the new year with my comfortable trail miles only being about 5/6miles, takes me a couple of months to double that.
If you haven’t run in 15years your body will take a while to adapt. Your bones and joints need to toughen up etc.
My advice would be to take it easy for at least a couple of months. Just run how you feel, enjoy it and build up from there.
The worst thing you could do would be too push too much and injure yourself or hate the process.
Disclaimer: I’m not a running coach and take all the above with a pinch of salt!
