    I'm running a cane creek coil shock with a valt progressive coil on my V2 Ripmo with a cascade link. Like you, the 36 Grip 2 up front started to feel a little lacking. so I got the Vorsprung smashpot coil conversion with HBO. My word, I think I've stumbled upon the holy grail suspension setup on my Ripmo!

    As a lighter rider (140lbs geared), I've struggled finding good air settings that aren't too harsh. I switched to coil front and rear on a Stumpy Evo with the cascade link last year and I really can't say enough good things about it. I was able to slow down the damper and add slightly higher spring rate, and it feels amazing, plush off the top, supportive in the middle, more predictable like Jeff said and no issues with bottom out with HBO on both. Not sure I'll ever go back to air, just night and day better. RS RC2T with Springdex, and Vorsprung RS Pike.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  Před 9 dny +2

      I could see the Tigon being a great choice on the Stumpy, especially if riding the mullet link. I preferred the Stumpy with dual 29" wheels, the slack headtube cup, and the mullet link in back. A bit taller, still slack. The TIgon would help a lot with that.

      @@BenSch100 Never tried a HBO shock, but comparing it to my previous air shock i can say it feels similar to that. I'm 165 lbs running a 450lb spring and 25psi in the chamber. It's plenty supple and grippy off the top, and it progressively gets more resistant the further you go through the stroke. I like a lot of bottom out resistance so that's why I have it set so high. Most people i've talked to run 17-23psi.

      @LaurentiusTriarius I'm 195 with gear. I run a 450 coil (tried a 500 first). The damping is good enough that you can pre load your way between and more miss our on support (IMO). That HSC knob is super tight at first but once it breaks in you can move it without the tool. I also felt like the shock was much better as it broke in. I’m 230lbs and love the support I can get with this thing without the harshness that the X2 at 300psi provided. A light rider may not have the same results but that seems to be par for the course with Cane Creek suspension.

    The right shock will make a frame suspension design better. Found out a long time ago by swapping a shock out and it was day and night. Last year, wound up having to do it again on new frame that never felt right, put a new Cane Creek rear shock on and instantly transformed the bike.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  Před 8 dny

      Swapping the stock shocks off the Yeti SB160 and Pivot Shuttle SL helped those bikes immensely! Sometimes product managers decide they want their bike to “pedal well.” As a result they spec waaay too much damping. It’s a common issue with companies that sell complete bikes thru retailers. The parking lot test ride is seen as very important. In reality most modern bikes pedal just fine with lower damping- and better off road with less damping too.

    Great video! Perfect timing. I did back to back comparisons at snowshoe last weekend of a carbon ripmo on Fox factory suspension (38 fork) and a ripmo AF with the coil fork and coil shock. The AF was so plush and didn’t kill my hands on 1500’ descents. The carbon killed my hands but it was more poppy and slightly more fun at times. Wonder if the frame material matters that much or the coils front and rear made all the difference? Curious what your thoughts are Jeff.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  Před 8 dny +1

      The AF is a pretty flexy bike- for me, that’s not a good thing. It’s highly distracting and zaps my confidence. I think most of what you’re noticing is a combo of the poppy air suspension as well as the likely 4lbs of weight difference between them. 2lbs between af and carbon. And 2lbs between coil and air.

Maybe I’ve oversimplified it , as it is a science to get it right and yeah you may have to try a few to get it right but once it’s dialled there’s nothing better 😎 I’m not sure why the whole bike industry keeps saying “ Coils are Linear” when they must know progressive coils are available 🤔or maybe if it was as simple as that they couldn’t sell you a new amazing shock to extract more dollars 💵 from you as I’m sure the right coil is way cheaper than upgrading to a shiny new shock 😜

      Thanks for all the comments, Mike. I enjoy the Rocky Mtn Altitude a TON, but it's an enduro bike, not a trail bike.
