Neil Gaiman's The Eternals

- During the 1970s, comics legend Jack "King" Kirby returned to the House of Ideas with perhaps his biggest idea of all: the universe of the Eternals! Their creation was the result of Kirby's ceaseless curiosity about the origin of man and his mythologies - but like many of the King's concepts, it was defi nitely ahead of its time. Flash forward to 2006: Superstar creators Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. have boldly taken on these concepts with a loving hand, in the process telling a fresh and crackling fun yarn full of mystery, suspense and majestic power - all with an eye on helping establish Kirby's creations as a vital part of the Marvel Universe once and for all. Against the backdrop of Marvel's Civil War, the Eternals are awakening one by one from a strange, waking dream, at once coming to terms with the fact that they are far more than the normal people they have thought themselves to be. They find there is little time to commiserate about such things, however, as they are thrust into a life and death sruggle that spans both time and space! 👋 I'm not the only who remembered this episode! 😁
@@thetizic I remembered it too! lol
I’m so glad Tiffany broke it down, because until watching this, I still didn’t understand the chronology of Eternals, Mutants, Inhumans and Baselines. Great episode. Also, Tiffany hosting is always a plus. 👍
I love that Tiffany got to go into all the wacky chronology stuff for this episode. This is peak Marvel to me, for better or for worse.
lol I still barely do. The New Gods are incredibly less convoluted by comparison.
Same I was like “what in the name of the universe are the Eternals
Tiffany, I am so very impressed by the work you did to prepare for this episode. I clicked on this video knowing NOTHING about the Eternals. You did such a good job educating me, so thank you. Plus, your storytelling is captivating. I hope you're proud of yourself, because you deserve it.
Thank you so much! I was really worried about this episode, so this means a lot!
I always thought perhaps the atomic age was the catalysts that activated the mutant gene to become more prevalent in modern times. Which could explain why mutants were so rare before. This way the Oneg origin and the atomic origin can both be true.
Yeah that's what it seemed to me. The atomic age didn't given humans the x gene. Its more like the x-gene was activated like you said because of the atomic age.
“That’s so sprite” needs to become ComicPop’s next recurring Easter egg
Hope they use this comic as a basis for the ETERNALS movie
They are. You got ur wish
@@timothycoleman5575 How do you know?
Nope.
@@Beliasa01 unfortunately
Rewatching this in preparation for the movie, and I had an even better time this rewatch. Just… so much lore. I love it.
For a sec I thought you actually got Neil Gaiman to do a back issues about the Eternals. I was picturing him acting like Sal lol
Same here. LOL
He'd make for a great guest on Elseworlds Exchange. ^^
Neil Gaiman is an amazing writer!!!
...And then Queen Beryl arrives and tries to kill them, but is stopped by the dashing Tuxedo Mask. And then Ikaris dramatically transforms before saying "In the name of the Unimind, I shall punish you!"
Because this story is _just SAILOR MOON'S FIRST ARC. _*_IT'S JUST SAILOR MOON!_*
I guess I know why Tiffany likes it, now.
Just Some Guy with a Mustache You have a point.
I just figured it was because Tiffany likes anything with Neil Gaimans name on it lol
I'm loving the back to back Tiff hosted episodes!
Thank you so much!
I'd like to see your trunkation of Jack Kirby's New Gods epic.
Batfreeze Yes!
Gaiman has such a great imagination and vision. Tiffany does an excellent job here explaining that vision.
Man Ben looks so different without the beard. Almost didn't recognize him lol
The Eternal‘s by Neil Gaiman is an awesome read. It’s only downfall is that he did not follow up with the second volume.
Tiffany! Please, please, put a link in the description of where I can get that sweater.
You guys definitely deserve more subs and views. Comic pop is awesome!
Tiffany and Ethan = Sarcasm and Logic
yall are hilarious.
Also, ben, never change lol
That was amazing Tiff, you gave depth and background for the externals so I finally get it and Ben and Ethan kept it funny so time flew by.
Thank you so much!!
I love this. Give Tiff her own spin off
You are too sweet! 💕
For the record I adore the way Tiffany tells a story! Sal is great, but Tiffs style is just different enough! Cant wait until you do another book! 😜
We already saw one of the Celestials in Guardians of the Galaxy, right? In the Collector's hologram presentation about the power gem?
Yes
Also the giant head floating in space (the one that had a mining town) and Ego the living planet
Thank you!
This was completely awesome.
I've been a comicbook fan since the 80's, but The Eternals weren't my cup of tea,....
This has changed that.
Awesome job! Thank you for a great episode. I’ve had a soft spot for the Eternals for a long time, and this is definitely the best treatment of them.
I loved the interaction between the Eternals and the humans. Even Thena, with a human child, pretty much equates him to Zuras’s dog when arguing about being allowed to keep him.
Oh, and Pym just gets treated like a punk by Ikaris.
Pym: Hey! When you told me to stand over here, were you mind controlling me?!
Ikaris: WOW, I’m impressed that you noticed. Why don’t you shrink down and sit over there while we decide what we’re gonna do.
Pym: Good idea! DAMMIT!!
Ben you were replaced with your 2014 self and this created an alternate timeline where tiffany started comicpop and not Sal!
0:58 no that usually happens with Grant Morrison while high.
Mike Manhattan lol true
Why grant morisson?
You know I was flipping through this book today and not understanding it. What a coincidence
Thanks Tiffany! I thoroughly enjoyed this comic, and it was a lot of fun revisiting it with you lot. Sharing the wonder helps.
Flashpool linked us to this video in the highly recommended THE Sal & Benny Show (maybe AbsoluteComics - something like that) show on Twitch (Tuesdays at 4 PM CST @ Comicstorian) as "some of us" had no idea who the hell the Eternals were or why we should care about an Eternals movie.
Gotta say - as a movie... not seeing it.
If they took the Watchmen approach and made it an HBO series - totally could see that.
Still going to check it out... but probably at the budget theater, bluray, or morally gray streaming alternatives.
As for the Eternals themselves... this was really quite interesting, and I've gotta check out some more of their related comics. Can't wait to pick this up on the Jun 30 re-release.
Thanks for such an excellent, enjoyable, and informative video.
Damn, just when you think you know all there is to know about the Marvel universe....
Had NO idea the Eternals would be connected to Thanos like that
Ben thinking the Eternals asked Gaiman to write their story gave me instant flashbacks to the Final Crisis episode. Grant Morrison riding around on Orion's back and getting handed the book he would go on to write.
Been year's since I read this one, and you've made me want to revisit it!
I watched this video one time, and the CZcams algorithm just dropped a bunch of Eternals content in my recommended videos. Not that it’s a bad thing but out of all of the topics to pull from based on my viewing history of Back Issues (which I watch almost everyday), Eternals is the one CZcams deemed worthy of my interest.
Watching this after reading Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribic's 'ETERNALS #1' 🙌
Dangley earrings look great on Tif! Don't think I've seen those before.
They're new and I kind of want to get more!
@@TheRealZubes Do iiiiit!
The Subez is strong with this episode
This story is just so sprite!
I really hope we get a back issue on Hickman's shield hosted by Tiff and Ethan has to be there for that!!!
Nothing against sal but tiffany stories are always awesome she should get her own playlist
This was super super interesting!! Thanks for bringing us these fascinating comics that I may have not otherwise run into before :)
You guys keep pumping out so much good content!
The reason Makkari's a speedster is because that's what he trained himself to be. You see, Eternals can specialize in specific powersets at the expense of their other abilities.
Glad this exists so I can learn who the hell the eternals are before their upcoming adaptation
I’ve watched this video quite a few times now and I gotta say this episode is one of my favorite Back Issues episodes, right up there with Superman: Up in the Sky and Doomsday Clock. It’s actually because of this episode that the Eternals have become some of my favorite Marvel heroes, Ikaris in particular. So yeah, I don’t know if you guys will see this but if you do I just wanted to say thank you.
Comic Pop, you are The Best.
43:23 - 47:55 I love the interconnected history of it all.
I'm actually looking forward to the Eternals movie even though I knew nothing about them until I watched this video. It'll be interesting to see how much, if any, of this storyline they use to introduce them in the MCU.
It does seem like the easiest origin to explain why we haven't seen them in other MCU movies. They didnt get involved in any of the world ending events before phase 4 because they were wandering around with fake memories :)
I'm so glad I stayed till the end
I was really hoping for a Ben Issues there haha
Great episode
Hooray! I've been excited to hear Tiffany explain this one. One of the very few Eternals stories I actually enjoy and think they can use to introduce them to the MCU. There's even a built in reason how we can explain no one knowing about them all this time. Great job Tiffany!
Thank you!! ❤
I really like the mythology built here
I legitimately had not thought about this book since i read it in it's initial run. gotta go back and check it out.
Loved that "Who Wants to Be a Superhero" got a mention. I'd love to hear the ComicPOP crew's opinion on it.
Rewatching this tonight to prep for Kieron Gillen's new Eternals book tomorrow!
From the reviews of the movie it sounds like they made an Eternals movie with the Marvel Formula.
And it comes down to what people think about the Eternals.
I might buy this
Ethan is a Golden GOD!
Tiffany + Gaiman = instant classic.
Bought trade count since I started watching Back Issues: 66.
a back issues on my 'last day alive. Thank you so much for all the content, it helped when i needed ot most. Gonna miss this channel, well if you can miss anything when you're dead
Hey Bryan, I hope you're ok. This kind of talk makes me nervous, so I just wanted to check in and see what's up. I'm here if you want to talk, so please reach out.
Bryan, you're an amazing member of this community and an incredibly friendly person. We just want you to know that, and that you're not alone.
I see that you commented on a video a couple months ago. Happy to see you are alive. Hope u are well.
46:29 was the first time "I" heard Alars which is what the Redskull said was Thanos's father's name in Infinity War right?🤔
Yep, that's the comic book origin of the inhabitants of Titan & Thanos' Family, thought that was going to be her tangent
Good, for a second i thought Redskull said Eros was Thanos's father... though i did expect him to say Mentor not Alars.
No he didn't say alars. Red skull always says the person's opposite sex parent. So Clint was son of Edith, Natasha Daughter of Ivan, Gamorah, daughter of Thanos (wrong btw, weird?) Thanos, Son of Sui-San.
The way that Ben tries to stop himself from laughing at "I know him. I've seen him in my dreams." is why I keep coming back to this channel. 21:17, if you're interested.
Eternals sounds a lot like a Cosmic Tolkien story and I'm all on board with that
Incredible job going into the history.
Thank you so much!!
I've been meaning to read this forever haha
The advert for Neil Gaiman's MasterClass came up right before this. Sometimes the CZcams algorithms line things up perfectly and I think it's probably just a coincidence, because at other times CZcams recommends videos about children's toys to me after watching ComicPop. Truly targeted advertisement at it's finest...
New Hair Cut Tiff?
I love how you kept spinning more and more tangents out of why the Eternals are really really important
Thank you and yeah...not sure how I feel about it!
@@TheRealZubes looks nice although I keep wanting to fix your part to keep the hair out of your face
Sorry I have a problem
I love this book its one of my favorite , them being printed out reminds me of the x island
Uhh can we get some subtitles I'm kinda deaf... 😁thanks
Great episode. Knocked it outta the Park gang.
I wonder what a X-Men mini series by Gaiman would had been like?
Wow I've come full circle from the final host in the avengers story to the first host here
I had comiXology unlimited and got a chance to check it out. I really was into it hopefully Marvel will reprint the original run in their Masterworks edition.
Not going to lie, I was thinking of the Endless for a second.
Ok, this episode seems interesting, but I'm dying 'cause of a freaking headache and need some sleep.
I promise to watch it tomorrow early ;)
Feel better!
@@TheRealZubes Thanks!!
I needed a reason to deprive myself of sleep tonight.
Can you guys please do something on Dale Keown?...I honestly think he was not only one of the best artist at Image, but one of the most tragic.
What happened to him?
I ducking love this book
Wow first video I watched in a while Ben has lost a lot of weight good for you Ben.
I'm not ready for you guys to roast and completely destroy one of my guilty pleasures.
I love D-List characters like this who actually have a rich but unnoticed history.
I think I've gone cross-eyed from all the lore.
Finally!
The Eternal challenge...writing Eternals.
I enjoyed how crazy the story was but also it just felt really cramped with concepts and ideas. Maybe it's just one of those comics you need to read for yourself to "get."
I provided a lot of additional info, to try to fill in general knowledge for the guys!
It's a shame that there aren't more references to Sersi's time with the Avengers (and with the Black Knight, Marvel's best character) in this book.
So, we have about 5 subspecies of humans in the marvel universe:
Humans
Mutants
Inhumans
Eternals
Deviants
Honorable mentions:
Synthizoids
A.I.s
Robo-humans (from x-men)
Tiffany foreshadowed the phase 4 reveal lol
yay the eternals
Hopefully they'll use this and some Kirby's stories and designs for the movie 😁👍 even though Jolie is in it😝😝
I got this book from a library.
More Gaiman pls.
Geez ....way to make us all feel under dressed to the party Tiffany ...with the earrings looking all fancy 😔😒😁.
😊💕
Seeing Ben without a beard for the first time, did not recognize him at all
What's crazy is that they are using this story for the Eternals movie. so I'm definitely looking forward to it. You did a great job.and obviously none of them typically on Titan were like Thanos because he stated that they thought he was crazy for wanting to remove half the population so he was outsted from Titan. I am curious to know if they're even going to bring uphe sokovia accords since iron Man is dead and Robert Downey jr. Hasn't really planned on coming back so unless they're doing a huge surprise that no one has seen comingwith him showing up in this movie, I'm guessing you're just going to ignore that whole registration part.
Only you guys can make Eternals seem interesting lol - excellent vid Tiff and gang!
Thank you! 😊
You should do The Mask on back issues
Love the Eternals
YAAAY I LOVE THE ETERNALS
I like when the Eternals crossed over with Hercules. They just diss each other on their own mythologies.
21:02 it be like that sometimes
WRITE OUR STORY!!
_Oh fuck yes, _*_Eternals!_*
Well, I was gonna sleep.
Was.
