How to make a cheap hanging flower basket

- 🌴Hey Ya'll! In this video I will show you how I make an inexpensive hanging basket using a simple "weed barrier" as my liner instead of coir or sphagnum moss. I purchased a 3ft x 50ft Vigoro weed barrier (you can use any weed barrier brand) and cut to fit the 20" basket I used in the video. I figured that I can get roughly 14 baskets lined (if using the 20" size) for about a $1.00 per basket...that is a significant savings! This is a first for me lining these baskets in this way, and I'm hopeful this method will work. Thank you for watching and please don't forget to subscribe. 😄

Hi Julia, absolutely! I have planted some Bougainvillea in these basket since this video came out and they are growing so beautifully. If you go to my channel and click on the video titled "How to grow Bougainvillea in hanging baskets" , you will see that I lined these baskets with the same type of liner. Its working g quite nicely for a fraction of the cost. Really appreciate your watching. 🤗

Thanks for the heads up on the basket liner! I couldn't really tell if you used anything to secure the liner to the top of the basket? If you would let me know as i am going to buy the garden weed ground cover this week and whatever may be needed for fasteners thx
Hi Sherri...in these baskets I did not secure the liner to the basket and I haven't had any issues with the liner slipping, however, I lined two other large baskets and did use small tie wraps around the top to secure it. It works either way, just make sure if you don't secure it to leave enough to tuck it in. I appreciate your watching and hope you enjoyed the video. : )
Did the weed barrier hold up from spring to fall? What if theres heavy rain? The weed barrier didnt rip or sag through the holes?
Hello! Yes, and yes! The weed barrier has worked really well for me. I have been getting several plantings with each basket. Eventually, these barriers do break down but have been lasting longer than the coir liners. I do use both. Happy Gardening 😄
Do you have any pictures of a wire basket with weed barrier after 7-8 months? Im in Middle River Maryland. We have several heavy rain spells with high humidity. I think my local weather patterns will cause the weed barrier to sink between the metal holes and break down. I have 2 metal hanging baskets in my front yard that hang over top a lower garden bed. Just wwnt to prevent a big mess. Would landscape fabric hold up better than weed barrier? Is landscape fabric thicker?

I love your videos and that you can give Florida gardening advice. I am in Central FL Gulf Coast. What is the cord running up one of the chains? And do you have to secure the shepherd's hook to support the weight of the basket when watering or during Florida downpours? Did I miss that info?
Hi Jo, thank you so much for watching the channel! The cord running up the chain is actually a tube for drip irrigation. As for the hook, I secured it directly into the 4x4 fence post for stability because yes, you are correct in saying these bakets do get heavy...especially after being watered. Happy gardening 🌺😀
