- Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis) All Bosses (No Damage). The game is known in Japan as "The Super Shinobi" (ザ・スーパー忍). The US version was slightly censored (they replaced Godzilla by Skeleton Godzilla) and change Batman's form to some flying creature, but still there is Spider-Man, though... so it's strange decision. Some interesting notes. The bosses are named in the instruction manual. Blue Samurai is called "Blue Lobster" (likely related to Lobster from the first Shinobi); Computer Brain is simply called "Computer"; the Terminator is called "Master Attacker"; Armoured Vehicle is called "Armored Car"; Godzilla's Skeleton is, for some reason, called "Brontosaurus" even though it clearly isn't; and the final boss is simply called "The Boss". Shadow Dancer and Spider-Man's names are the same (also Sega briefly had the rights to use Spider-Man, hence why some versions of this game have Marvel Comics mentioned), but sadly Batman/Devilman isn't named in the manual.

My cousin had the uncensored version of this game. The instruction booklet listed Spider-Man as one of the bosses, but not Batman. I found both of them something of a shock. There were also enemies that looked similar to Rambo, they ended up being changed, too. The original game must be worth a lot, now.
At one point, the same publisher (SEGA of America iirc) had the rights to publish both The Revenge of Shinobi and Marvel games, so Marvel partnered with them to make a Marvel-licensed Spider-Man tie-in edition of the game that acknowledged that the boss was copying Spider-Man.
I forgot about the Rambo's, yeah, I thought I remembered those wrong while playing the emulator. I still have my original cartridge though, need to play that version.

Of all the bosses, they did have the rights to use Spiderman. It does appear on the credits. As soon as those rights expired they changed the sprites on future releases.
I remember this awesome game back then in the 90s, I couldn't believe you get to fight Shredder, mother brain, Daredevil, terminator, hulk, Rambo, Jackie Chan, Spiderman, morbius(bat creature from Spiderman) Godzilla, and even jiraiya(from Naruto) lol all in one game, truly a classic

The first boss isn’t Shredder he’s a samurai warrior;also there’s no Jackie Chan those kung fu kickers are too tall and thin to be Jackie Chan and I don’t think the bat creature in the remake even looked like morbius he looked like a little kid’s drawing of one;I don’t know jiraiya but I think this was too early for somebody from Naruto to be in this. Tell me what you think about that.

It's not that the US version was altered, period. The altered US version is the second version.
I used to have the original US release of RoS with the bosses intact.
They actually made him look *more* like Spiderman in this version. Apparently the Japanese version used more of a dark navy color instead of that bright blue.

By far the game with best Ending and ending music as well. Outstanding.
I feel like this game doesn't come up in conversations about the hardest Genesis games very often when though imo it's one of the hardest games on the console. Especially the last handful of levels and bosses. Just absolutely brutal.
I've been trying to finish it recently, the bosses were destroying me.. (hence the visit here to maybe learn a bit from the pros lol). And I came in thinking the original Shinobi was difficult and thought having a health bar would solve all these issues.. XD

This game is incredible. I played it in the early 90’s.
I beat this game and even managed to get the Good Ending when I was 10 years old. Tried going back to it a couple years ago and couldn’t for the life of me get past the dinosaur boss.

I heard that for this version, MARVEL actually give the developer permission to use the actual Spider-Man. However, instead transforming into Devil-Man, Spider-Man simply left the scene.

I love the intro brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.
I liked the fact that you confront spidey in the stage boss there and after that you have the demon like creature attacks,demon goblin perhaps? Sega loved the comic book heroes as it seems & such!

The changes to the bosses wasn't a US vs. Japan thing. My Japanese copy of this game is a later re-release with the bosses changed, and the US version was initially released with the bosses in tact.
That first boss always reminds my of the shredder from ninja turtles

The car is what got me so many times. Wasn't until much later I was able to get past that level. Looking at it now seems so easy. Not when you're 9 though.

The last boss is called renjishi. Its a famous kabuki teather character. Its the lion guardian of heavens. The statue in my thumbnail is the same character.

I remember being blown away by the graphics and style but now looking at it, I'm like WTF? I god that Dinosaur Robot so much cooler in my head, and sound way CD quality in my head.
You gotta admit though, it looks great for a 1989 game.
The soundtrack is still great. I just don't think the Genesis' sound has aged as well as other retro systems.

I agree. In which part of the game did you lose? Stage 7 is pretty hard (you know, the level in the docks), but when I reached the last boss, the girl ended always smashed. Never knew that you could stop the stone for a few seconds.
The disco room has “Zeed” written on its walls, which is a reference to the first villain of Hokuto no Ken.

I finally found it...the game that kicked my motherfuckin ass as a kid. except I remember that first samurai boss with the red armor being different. I remember him being taller than that, like almost the size of the buildings, and with a pale color scheme as if he were a dead samurai. but this is definitely it. you don't mistake those special magic attacks.

That boss fight at 1.35 can be killed instantly with walking forward with the shield on as far as I remember

This version is easier than the one I had growing up. I could see that the proximity box of Blue Crab (blue samurai) is significantly larger. Shadow dancer is much more aggressive and faster in the old version. The brain looked about the same. And I never got farther than that boss as a kid.

This should have been a movie with all these crossovers. Shredder, The Black Panther, Hulk, Terminator, Godzilla Spiderman, Batman and Devilman in some versions.

To this day, I have never been able to complete this game. Gave up decades ago! The spiderman boss was all it took for me to throw the cartridge out the window 😂 I think they key is timing and a lot of shurinkens

What makes Godie's Skele so uncomfortable is that you can see pretty much see it's pooper
So I definitely saw Spider-Man, but I thought the bat creature was supposed to be Devil Man from the Devil Man anime. Although, in the original Gorjira 1954 Godzilla was reduced to a skeleton by a specialized bomb where it killed Godzilla by stripping its flesh from his bones.
What's going on? Why was there a disco scene with two ninjas?
The decisions were made because of licensing, and on the original version they did have them all in it but in the second version released that same year they were taken out, look up both of the versions.
