- Dave Liebman remembers the relationship between Miles Davis and John Coltrane to be like older and younger brothers being able to understand each other with little need for dialog. Dave shared the stage with the two for a year and a half, during which he witnessed just how these two reticent men respected each other’s undeniable talents. John analyzed and studied Miles’ role not just as a simple musician, but as a bandleader. With this acquired knowledge, John was able to become a bandleader himself with his classic quartet in the 60’s.
When Miles was questioned by critiques about the length and substance of John’s solos, he expressed his intention to let him “practice” on the bandstand. This was highly uncommon for bandleaders to allow musicians such freedom during a live public performance. When Miles finally asked John of why his solos were so long, Dave recalls John simply replying that he needs the time to “get everything out!”.
Dave states “For this live show, I will choose some songs from the legacy of Coltrane and Miles.. a rather large project to fit into a limited time span”. With confidence he reassures that he will be joined by “some of the best jazz musicians in the world.”
