    The price of the Ally now makes it a very compelling option, and if you know what you're doing with Windows you can really strip it bare and make it a smoother experience. I have a Deck and I had an Ally but sold it and bought the Legion Go, ultimately it was down to its size, I have big hands and it was really uncomfortable after a while, the Deck and the Legion are so much better for me and has been great but I really miss the VRR on the Ally, if they make a new one with bigger grips I'll be buying it.

    I'm a busy person, I have one or two hours a day to play games, when I click the power button on my handheld I don't want to be greeted with Windows Update, I want a Game Ready handheld and that's why I vote for Steam Deck. I think Asus should come up with a custom OS for their next Ally and not be crippled by Windows bloatware and endless BIOS updates.

    • @mkiller1001
      @mkiller1001 Před měsícem

      @@BarryWardUK this is not the only issue I have with all these Windows based handhelds. The OS is simply not designed for handhelds, it comes with all the bloatware and crap you'd expect on a windows pc, drivers updates, terrible support and more. I already have Windows on my work laptop and I hate it, can't imagine bringing that experience to my gaming console too

    After having the steam deck for a year I sold it for 480 and bought an ally extreme for 450. The game changer is insane. With amd fluid motion frames I have ~70fps in medium graphics settings in horizon forbidden west where I was on the steam deck mostly under 30fps in low/very low with lot of drops in fps and crash during cinematics. For cyberpunk 2077 I was at 33fps and with some tweaks (lukeFZ) I get ~40 fps where on the ally extreme I'm between 100-120 fps. Helldivers 2 I was at 25fps in low settings and now I'm around 70fps with medium/high settings. Grateful to amd fluid motion frames who is impossible to install on the deck due to Linux...
    For me, and my use as gaming it's a game changer.
    I hope rog ally 2 will have trackpads. I'm looking for them with my thumbs when I'm using my ally 😅
    EDIT : If you don't have an external battery or the possibility to be wired the steam deck oled is a better choice. Also rog ally needs almost one day to be optimized compare to the steam deck who is plug n play.

    • @jakub.medek42
      @jakub.medek42 Před měsícem +1

      But if you have to stay wired, so probably at home otherwise it's a hassle, why not just stream from a pc. I can play cyberpunk at fhd 60 with ray tracing, on the pc, so I can either play on the pc or just stream to the deck and I'll have a way better experience than even the ally.

      Owned a SD from initial release to the Ally's release. Bought the Ally and only picked up the SD again to prepare it for resale. The Ally's VRR, much quieter fans at 15watts, and ability to play nearly every game, it was a gamechanger for me. I spent way more time on ProtonDB during that 1 year than I will ever spend tinkering with Windows.

      even in a head to head without amd fluid motion frames the rog ally just perform way better than steam deck oled. Setting it at 20W sustained under Custom Profile with a 1080P 120hz screen and VRR, it just blows away any competition. I've been playing God Eater 3, Code Vein, Witcher 3, Jedi Fallen Order, God of War, FF XV, NBA2k24, EA FC 24, Street fighter 5 CE + emulators damn it really change how I can still play while Im at work.

    I tried both and went with the Steam Deck Oled. I like the layout, controls and ergonomics better. It just feels more premium. Battery life is excellent too, a real big factor. Performance has been great, no complaints. I’m the type that gets anxious about battery, not the fps- as long as it’s stable and smooth I’m fine. I may have missed it but I think you should have mentioned the steam deck oled and battery life, it would have hugely affected the argument. Some people just want a gaming laptop like experience like the ally. Some people want a truly portable experience and the steam deck oled actually gives you that with really impressive battery life. It makes the steam deck oled more like a switch in terms of usability and offers more performance over the switch. I think the rog ally argument you make only really applies to people who don’t already have a gaming pc. If you want to be able to play everything (things with anti cheat) then it makes sense. If you already have a gaming pc the steam deck is like having a nice portable console. I deal with windows on my pc and play competitive games with anti cheat with mouse and keyboard. Why would I want to play competitive games with a controller at lower frame rates?

I know the ally is more powerful and I’m adept at using windows so I can figure things out …but just turning the damn thing on and only seeing games and game related content is a must for me . If I had to install drivers and mess with configurations on my PSP I’d be annoyed like crazy. The ally is a better gaming device for GAMING. The deck is a better gaming HANDHELD device cause things just work.

    I had SD lcd, then ally extreme for half a year and I am going to sell ally and get sd oled. sd has better grip, better UX, with oled - better screen and better battery life. I just get tired to be always wired with ally, turbo mode sounds like a small plane and in performance mode fps difference with sd is minimal. VRR on ally is working on 48-120hz range, that means you need at least 48fps to utilise vrr feature. Fluid frames is really not an option for games with fast reaction or online. Windows + Armory crate is laggy. I just have ps5 for large games on nice oled tv and nice fps and settings. Handheld is for hades 2 etc. That's my choice

    The Z1 non extreme is not as good as the Steam Deck eveb at 25w. It is interesting that the performance drop off is not as steep as the extreme version fron 25 to 15w. But the aenemic 4CU on the APU let it down. Better for PS3 emulation though. The extreme is around 30% better on average at 25w... Which makes it a more like mini pc as it needs to be plugged in, rather than a handheld. On sale, it is sometimes the cheapest 7840U device you can buy.

    The SD having a "Console Like" experience is complete Retconning. The description was never used prior to the Ally's release. Never seen a console where gamers had to adjust refresh rate, power draw, manual refresh rate lock, proton version, etc. The SD may be more "Console like" compared to a Windows based handheld, but ultimately it still operates like a gaming PC with all the settings users have to juggle to get a consistent gaming experience across different games.

    Fsr 2 and Fsr 3 makes up for the power difference in rog.
    Rog ally has only one thing up on steam deck , and that is online games with anti cheat.
    But you can still install windows on steam deck...
    Console like controls is very important. If you want to tinker, get a gaming laptop over a rog.
    Rog gets another plus for having extra power for emulation ( gow 3 needs it).
    Hopefully fsr 3 can be implemented into emulation too to make up the difference in the future.
    Price :
    Steam deck used is winning for buck per performance. But rog ally is winning used vs new steam deck
    Rog ally, you can spend alot of time trying to get a game running...and be exhausted after finally getting everything right.

    @jakub.medek42 Před měsícem +1

    I would completely disregard any game with an anti-cheat, since those are usually competitive and would be very annoying to play with a controller and on a small screen.
    So there is no need for windows, which is good, because windows really sucks for handhelds. Part of the reason why I was thinking about a handheld even though I have a powerful setup and don't travel much is the simplicity - just pick it up and play. No messing around with windows, or its terrible sleep mode.
    Battery life is a huge factor for a lot of people and you didn't even mention it. At 15W, steam deck oled seems to get around 50% more battery life - so for example 2h30 instead of 1h30 in demanding titles (and keep in mind that to have higher fps than the deck, you probably need to go to 25W with the ally, where the battery life will be even worse). At the lowest wattage, for old or 2d games, steam deck could go 8-12h, ally maybe 4-5h. That's not even a comparison, ally just needs to be plugged in nonstop.
    Also the screen, oled is so much better than the LCD on ally... I'd much rather have oled at 90 than LCD at 120.
    Finally, I played around with an ally at a store, they had a forza horizon 4 demo. Whatever settings I chose, it kept having huge frame drops. Frame rate wasn't anywhere near stable - steam deck plays it also with frame drops, but way, way less annoying ones. I bet the hw is good, but windows just sucks. Someone could certainly fix it, but I play to relax, not to debug.
    Edit: I've been thinking about this recently because I've been choosing between the two of them and ended up choosing the deck for the listed reasons. Even though I actually already own the ROG XG mobile EGPU (for my rog flow), so I am one of the few people who could actually use the connector.

    I then traded up for the Ally & actually liked it even more, Butt….
    The Lenovo Legion Go came out & I traded up again and got the Legion Go. There is no comparison, the Go is the absolute best handheld gaming device on the market.
