    This bag was originally made for children for school, the fact that everyone else decided they needed one too does not take away from what it’s original use was for. Fjallraven makes great backpacks for hiking etc but this backpack is for the minimal. If you judge a fish by how well it can climb a tree it will never measure up.

    Something you may not be aware of, you bought the classic - aka has been the same since the 70s, there are updated versions with the same look but actual padding and a laptop sleeve. Kånken was also designed for school kids in Sweden so the removable seat pad and the narrow bottle pockets make sense for the time. Would be great to see you review some of the new designs which are a bit more practical

    I’m considering the Kanken because I want something:
    - Lightweight
    - Unstructured
    - Tote bag handles
    - Suitcase style opening
    I have a Jansport that’s awesome for hauling heavy stuff all day, but I wanted something light and easy to get into for long road trips/hotel stays. I’m so tired of digging around in my giant Jansport for what I need for the night/next day.
    I just want to lay it down, zip it open and grab what I need. I think the Kanken will work well for this.

    I have a laptop backpack version as well. Super comfy with the padded straps.

  • @milla008
    @milla008 Před rokem +21

    I actually like that bag. It’s pretty durable and doesn’t matter how many things i put in it it doesn’t feel heavy at all, which is something i haven’t experienced with other bags. I’ve used it for 3 years now and still looks great. Also compared to other brands prices I wouldn’t say it’s a rip off since it’s also very long lasting. On the other hand if you need a bag for heavy tourism I wouldn’t recommend it because it doesn’t fit as much.

    • @Nomads.Nation

  • @Alwaysunderablanket
    @Alwaysunderablanket Před rokem +47

    I think this review is fair UP TO A POINT, especially on price. But I lived for many years in Scandinavia and these bags are a staple of pretty much every young person at some point, including the mini version for kindergarten. The padding in the back, for example, was to give kids something to sit on while eating lunch outside if it was wet. So I think it’s fair to tell viewers why it might not be the right pack for them, but also a bit unfair to judge what is clearly a heritage design up against modern tech standards. It’s kind of like taking a Barbour jacket on a climbing channel and saying “this Barbour jacket looks great but is useless for climbing mountains” - that would be true, but that is also not what it was designed for. I guess in sum I think the review is mostly fair, but as someone who knows the heritage of the bag, it felt like you could have emphasised that more in the design aesthetics

    • @Nomads.Nation
      @Nomads.Nation  Před rokem +10

      Thanks for your comment and totally get it. The heritage aspect of any product is important, but for our channel we try and review on the consumer aspect - mainly how much you are spending, and what you are getting for that amount of money. I agree that the story behind the product is very interesting, but imo it still doesn’t rationalize the price point. But also like i said, if this pack speaks to you then by all means spend money on it (just like I did with my tattoos lol)

    • @Alwaysunderablanket
      @Alwaysunderablanket Před rokem

      @@Nomads.Nation yeah on price I totally agree…I know some fans of the brand think they use the bag as a cash cow for their ‘proper’ outdoor gear. But it’s a lot for what you’re getting - I also wonder where the bags are made and if the high price is in part a result of its Scandinavian background (high wages, high taxes)

    If you want a kanken bag for school/college/work purposes, I highly recommend the 15” Laptop Kanken paired with the water bottle pocket and rain cover to further protect it from the rain. It even has an updated design with a pocket inside and there is a kanken organiser, but it’s only available in fog, navy and yellow
    I have had this kanken model for 1 year 5 months now and payed about £110 for it and it’s pretty durable. While it is expensive for what it is, I’ve used daily as a college bag, shopping bag, overnight bag/weekend bag, etc so it works out around 20p per day that I’ve owned it so far. I would have gotten the doughnut macaroon large, but I wanted the separate laptop compartment

The only 2 backpacks I’m aware of that have a false bottom are the brevite backpacks (brevite daily and jumper) and the Herschel pop quiz backpacks. You could always look into the doughnut macaroon backpacks that are the same style as the kanken with more compartments, but I’ve never had one and the reviews I’ve seen haven’t commented on a false bottom unlike reviews I’ve seen from the former 2 I mentioned

    In all honesty when i bought Kanken mini i almost regret it, i spend my saving (used to work in min wage job) for this 7L bag that didnt fit my day to day stuff. I bought another bag to get extra capacity too. But for me the experience of owning the kanken mini is a journey.
    For the past 4 years i learn how to work around the bag, slowly work on my habit to carry what’s necessary (ala minimalist), taking to any places (hiking, beach, tropical rainforest, mall, wedding or family function, traveling overseas) i see how it beaten up, blending in and just being a bag. Maybe I unconsciously tried to destroy the bag paid with 2 years saving, idk lol
    But dude never gave up. It does help me to think rationally on everyday carry, working creatively with the bag. Sure the strap can dig through the skin but i lighten up the load to just necessities. Now the bag become my constant companion to my workplace (no more min wage job) - it become that mini bag to go for light shopping after work so i dont have to carry bigger bags
    But, i also upgrade to few bags: Able Carry Thirteen (which i discovered from this channel), Aer city backpack and pacsafe vibe 25L
    Its not love at first rodeo, but you grew with it aesthetically

I use them for work (the laptop one,) as a purse, (the mini) and travel, and hiking (day hikes- I have a serious pack for serious hikes.) I love these bags and think they're worth the money. They hold up and they look good even as they age. I actually use the seat pad. I've re-touched my oldest one with some beeswax or otter wax, and also got rain covers. I live in a rainy area, so it makes sense. I've even used these for camera equipment and I love that it doesn't look like I'm carrying expensive equipment. It just looks like I'm a hipster with some thick book nobody wants to read. I've had mine for years and am a fan.

    8:22 - I think that's a cultural thing. The backpack was developed for school kids here in Sweden and we often use seat pads exactly like that when on school trips in primary school haha. Never bought a Kånken myself so for me that was a very funny reference to see.
    Sidenote: About the laptop, there is a laptop version of Kånken made for including laptops. The original isn't since laptops didn't exist in the 70's.

    I got my Kanken on sale so the price wasn't too bad, but I definitely wouldn't have paid full price for it even though I do love it a lot. I use it as my edc backpack and I don't actually carry around that much stuff day to day (phone, wallet, headphones, keys, reusable shopping bags, sketchbook, a few pens, a chapstick and thats about it) so I haven't had a problem with the straps for edc use as it is super light. Though whenever I have to take heavier stuff with me it is definitely not the backpack that I choose lol and I am not sure I am going to be using it in the summer either because of the lack of ventilation. Mostly I just bought it because I think it looks cool xD and the bag itself is pretty lightweight. I knew it wasn't going to be the most practical backpack by far and that it falls into the 'overpriced fashion item' category, but its cute lol. Though for anyone wanting a bag for more heavy-duty stuff, I would go with something else.

    I agree with this review, too. It looks nice and can pack a decent amount of stuff. And I like the boxy shape of it.
    But that's about it. The two worst things are the straps which are super uncomfortable when there is anything in the bag and the (for me) useless side pockets. There's no stretch whatsoever and they dig into the main compartment which in that case makes them obsolete because I could just put the water bottle inside the bag.
    I got the Laptop version of this bag with the added strap padding but even this doesn't help. I got the bag, loaded it up, wore it for 5 minutes and had to take it off. Haven't touched it since then and will probably sell it.
    I found the perfect bag for me and that's the Wandrd Prvke 31. The water bottle pocket is just so clever and big.
    Fjällräven makes decent products too. I have the Greenland Shoulder Bag which is a fantastic Messenger bag and the Ulvö 23 which is a proper backpack with decent padding and a "real" laptop compartment.
    In conclusion: I'll stay away from the Kanken series and get something else. I can live without the looks and fancy colours because I like my back to still be in good shape after wearing a backpack.

    Not too harsh, however, in their defense, they are one of the few manufacturers who seem to have nailed the filling every inch of the personal item under seat dilemma, due to shape/size (17" laptop version... wish they still made the "Maxi")... a couple more useful pockets and actual functional water bottle pockets for something other than a Memo bottle slim, sure would be nice! BTW... the 17" laptop Kanken has padded straps... not thickly padded, but padded none the less. 🙂

      I got one for that exact reason. Personal item size that definitely fits under the seat. Doubles as a daypack. Not super fashionable or cool, but sturdy and simple. I got the all black No. 2 15“ laptop version for about $70 on sale. Still not exactly cheap, but ok for me.

    • @chuckmurphy7280
      @chuckmurphy7280 Před rokem

      @@pan0ptica I watch so many of these reviews and continuously wonder why very few companies don't design bags that exactly fit this size need... one or two inches over in one direction or the other, with the wrong gate agent, could send one of your bags to the underbelly of the plane, possibly never to be seen again! But the under seat void seems to be a moving target as the airlines get greedier and shrink the seats to pack more cattle in the car! What might have worked as an under seat bag two years ago, may no longer fit, depending on the plane. There's a lot of improvement that could be done to the Kanken line (like bring back the now defunct Kanken Maxi), but I have to say, in my opinion, they have nailed the shape, dimensions and snapable strap/carry handle aspect. I'm flying to Lexington, KY, from Chicago next month and have to put my climbing gear (shoes x 2, harness, chalk bag and first aid kit) and it all fits my 17" Kanken with just enough room for my Aer Slim Pouch toiletry kit... literally not too many inches to spare. On that particular size aircraft (two seats per side of the aisle) I don't think I'd have enough room for anything other than the Kanken. Oh, and I paid $100+ for my bag, so you got a good deal! Happy Traveling!

The straps are put opposite to the pull direction, and you have to put the backpack down and then use BOTH hands and all fingers to adjust the straps. Who designed these straps! I use them for grocery shopping which is great because it can fit 4 milk / juice cartons easily and properly and seems quite durable. BUT THE STRAPS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO ADJUST WHILE WEARING THEM. Last time I replaced my backpack I considered this brand, for about 5 seconds, before rejecting the idea.
    1. In Hungary these cost about ten times more than no-name brand backpacks. I can not believe that they would last ten times longer.
    2. Hardly any pockets compared to even the very cheap alternatives. This makes it hard to organise my backpack.
    3. Shoulder straps are totally useless, can not carry more than a few pounds before they become uncomfortable. Even the cheap Chinese ones come with padded straps.
    To me, it looks that these are for people who like to show off that they can afford expensive stuff and not for those who actually need to use them. A fashion designer student told me years ago, fashion does not have to be comfortable.

    If you live in Sweden where these are produced, all outside benches are wet or very cold 80% of the time, the seat pad is indispensable. Also Swedish pubs and restaurans almost always have outdoor seating, and it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. As a kid I used the pad numerous of times riding the subway because the seats where filthy. I can guarantee you will use the seat pad more than you can imagine, you are just not used to have one so you don't understand the usage.
    But the main selling point of this bag is quality and sustainability. I got mine in the 80'ties and used it from kindergarten to the age of 12, then one of my younger cousins inherited it, now one of his kids are using it. I think it has been in daily use for at least 20 years.
    I think this review misses a HUGE point.
    The price tag comes from that it is produced in an environmental friendly way, that costs. The brand is actually an out door gear clothing brand which is all about nature and sustainability, and have been like that since the start. For example they make rain proof outdoor gear refusing to use goretex because it is one of the nastiest production techniques for the environment. All their products are incredibly sturdy. I have a fishing/hiking jacket I have used for 30 years, it is in better shape than other jackets I have that are 1-2 years old...
    And to be fair, this is meant to be a kids bag, especially the size that is tested in this review. For adults there are laptop versions with inserts for paper, pens and other stuff.

      Thanks for your comments! And while I agree with a few of your points, I've reviewed hundreds of bags (and am in the process of making my own) so I have a pretty good idea of when a product is overpriced. This bag is no longer made in Sweden (made in China), their eco-friendliness has gone wayy down in the recent years, and while a foam insert has functional value, none of it rationalizes the price point... (in my opinion!). Thanks for watching :)

      @@Nomads.Nation What puzzles me as a Swede is that adults around the world use this bag to such an extent, in Sweden it is still considered a kids bag, like 3-9 years old kids, a 11 year old would not be caught dead with this bag.... As adults go, a woman can get a away with this bag, but not a man. A man using this bag would be the subject of ridicule on a daily basis. It is like wearing an avengers backpack while riding a BMX to work... Also, grown women using this bag in Sweden is almost always far left, and EVERYONE knows this, it is sort of part of the "intellectual far left identity tool kit", so any adult woman would not use this bag either because of the political statement it sends.

So when we started to get aware of what was cool or not, around 8-9, the quality was actually a curse. This backpack is not for children too. Unfortunately someone in the past moved from the Vikings highlands to Europe. Quality of those bags were made in Sweden , however now these are manufactured in China and only God knows about the Quality control. The value of the bag is about twenty bucks, and the company moved to 99 bucks. It is not correct and it seems it was designed by drunk engineers, apart the pulling strip for the zipper closure. I never understood this in america - is it that hard to check the pronounciation of a foreign word?
    When americans come to europe they keep correcting our english.
    Maybe we can ask for little favour to say one word to pronounce properly: fyallraevan

    • @Nomads.Nation
      @Nomads.Nation  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I think that I see your point, but also people from different places pronounce things different ways. Have you ever heard a Brit, an American, and a Spaniard say the word ‘Nike’? You’ll get three completely different pronunciations, even though it’s the same word.

And the lack of padding on the shoulder straps look uncomfortable af.
