  • Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young perform "Almost Cut My Hair" at the Farm Aid concert in Bristow, Virginia on September 17, 2000.
Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

They got me through the 70's. The band was not above or below us, but with all it's faults and genius, honestly one of us. Listening to their music, always made me feel like we were part of a larger family, learning, struggling, celebrating, not giving into greed or ignorance, but reminding what life was and what could be. So glad they got a lot of it recorded. Peace and Love to the family and beyond....carry on

This song is one of the best at expressing the culture and attitudes in 1970. In my top 10 favorite songs. Back when this song came out I did not cut my hair for three years, Then my job was more important so I cut it. Now I am happily retired. I haven't cut my hair in over ten years..... I have been fortunate to see C.S.N. Live 3 times. They did this awesome tune each time and the crowd loves it. The last show was at Doubleday Field Cooperstown N.Y. and I recorded the show in full HD 5.1 surround sound The recording is awesome. Have a Splendid Successful Day

Remember when CSNY broke up, Stills and Young released an album together and Nash and Crosby released an album together? They picked the person they meshed with the best. Neil and Stephen always have meshed together both as guitarists and lyricists.

It's why Stills wanted Young in the group. Nash didn't want to do anything to change the perfection of their unique vocal harmonies. He met Young and asked him why they should invite him to be part of the group. Young asked him if he had ever heard him and Young play guitars together. Nash said that he had, and the group became CSNY.

If I Could Only Remember my Name has one track on it that I know was absolutely Cosmic, I'm not sure if it was the title track or not, but I'm going to have to go back and investigate that Bloody album from top to bottom because that was my go-to album for a while ...that and Tracy Nelson Down So Low.... some of the other unknown lights and luminaries on the San Francisco scene starting with Naughty Women, the cross dressing band that had Izzy Stradlin playing drums, and who later put together Guns and Roses ....and then all the way up to the Chambers Brothers, Zolar X and Automatic Man ....Michael Shrieve's band that truly was the first real black super group in the Bay Area after Sly and the Family Stone, all measured up besides Hendrix's Band of Gypsies ...but worthy of the name, way before Living Color of course, although my hat goes off to them as well.... and of course the Bad Brains .... total badass players ....

Times are such that almost every week one of our old rock gods or goddesses dies. And in western countries there is hardly any prospect of offspring. If you ask a 17-year-old about rock and heavy metal today, you'll get the answer: "Ahh rock, is that these 80-year-old great-grandfathers?" "And heavy metal, is that those 60 year old grandpas?" 5 generations invented this music, made it big, enjoyed it and now we let it die ???
Support the next generation dear friends, buy music from young rock and metal artists from all over the world !!!🙏🤘🙏

God DAMN right!! It's been my anthem, my mantra, my raison d'être since the moment this song hit the airwaves. It was a message for the Aquarian Age, baby and now it's finally here. Above all else, establish a moral code to live by, and in doing so, be as authentic and honest with yourself as possible. It becomes a shield of honor and protection, yet it raises the frequency and vibration of the entire planet. Get on it people times a wastin'.

I had been searching for a more "classic" performance of this Crosby anthem, but once I watched this Farm Aid clip, I was reduced to tears of joy and sadness. I remember hearing this song for the first time in the early 1970’s, the simple lyrics struck me deep. In a few lines it captured the troubled times and in the last verse it offered a philosophy of life. In this video from Farm Aid 2000, Crosby is singing it with all the agony and ecstasy of his life. The guitar solos and spirit are brilliant. I’ve watched this many times and each time is like the first.

It was the opposite of "3 days of peace, love, and music." It was generally called "R&R's worst day in history," by Rolling Stone Magazine. Wow! Completely forgot about this song. When I realized that Crosby Stills and Young were going to do it I totally went into shock. I love it. And to hear them playing it live, now, I closed my eyes and it was just like listening to it 50 years ago. I almost lite a joint but forgot I haven’t smoked for a long while. And Nash.

Don't know if this counts as David's best song - there's at least three or four great contenders, but this is my oersonal fave; the one that still brings tears to my eyes( I'm typing with wet cheek now). It captures the shared vision and dreams we all had, and we told each other so by simply not cutting our hair for a few years. One of the many fantastic cuts on the greatest hippie album of all time - Deja Vu.
Sure, like so many, by the time the 70s finished I had cut my hair. It was even shortish in the 80s and 90s. However, now, in the second "roaring 20s" - not a roaring non-stop party this time, but the recurrent roar for social and environmental change, and to stop yet another war - I'm letting my "freak flag fly" again.
People, the world still needs us, more than ever. Let's keep the dreams alive and turn them into reality!
Dave - your spirit still lives on in millions of beating true hearts - you will never be forgotten. Love ya, man. ✌&❤ forever.

There is a big difference between the 60's generation and the millenials of today.
My generation was fighting against the establishment for all of the oppressed. The millenials have been indoctrinated in public schools along with the aid of propagandist MSM into fighting along racial lines.
If we don't join together, we are doomed!

My sister let me try here. I'm 68 and have tried my best to live by the following. If you believe that everyone should be allowed to think, and act in a way that doesn't hurt or interfere with anyone else you might be flying your freak flag. I think this includes treating everyone with respect and dignity that you would like to be treated. I also believe that at some point in your life and probably during you entire life you should be willing to help other people and creatures when they hit a rough patch. I think it breaks down to this everyone has their own ideas and life style, yours and mine may not match very well but I have to allow you to be you and you have to allow me to be me. I think that's what makes my freak flag fly, how about you? My sister, be well and safe, peace to you and yours
