Summary:
From the first public Mime Troupe events in 1965 to his untimely death in 1991, Bill Graham set the standard for excellence in concert presentations and in doing so, redefined the art of communication for an entire generation. To honor Bill Graham, Steve Kahn and Melissa Gold, the BGP staff organized a free concert in Golden Gate Park for Sunday, November 3. Mother Nature cooperated and provided a comfortable and cloudless day as 300,000 people gathered in the Polo Field of Golden Gate Park.
Although the Grateful Dead were expected to make an appearance, the list of performers was kept well under wraps and few had any idea who exactly would be performing. It didn't seem to matter though, as the feeling that permeated the crowd was one of quiet reflection. This concert marked the end of an era, but also memorialized Bill Graham in a manner that was fitting - a free concert in the heart of where it all started. The sad circumstances aside, this was truly a celebration of Graham's life and as the poster for this event noted, it was to be a day filled with Laughter, Love and Music.
A rousing welcome greeted the second extended set of the day, which brought together Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Rarely a polished band onstage, this set is more ragged than usual, but to some degree that is part of the charm of this impromptu performance. There is no rhythm section here; just the four musicians and their distinctive voices. Other than occasional electric guitar work from Stills and Young, the set is instrumentally an acoustic affair, utilizing only guitars and harmonica.
They begin with Nash's anthemic "Teach Your Children," engaging the audience to sing along. Next up is Stills' "Love the One You're With," in a rare acoustic arrangement. The melancholy harmonica intro to Neil Young's "Long May You Run" and the relaxed groove he soon creates on this song is one of the highlights of their set. The lyric and the inherent sadness in Young's vocal seems to resonate and reflect on the day.
Crosby's "Long Time Gone" features some interesting electric lead guitar work from Stills, but ultimately suffers from the lack of rhythm section and Crosby's shouting, as opposed to singing, the vocal. "Southern Cross" fares slightly better, but again it is Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that brings out the most thoughtful and harmonious interplay.
Recognizing this, they deliver another engaging performance. The vocals are now stronger and the extended jam treatment given to "Wooden Ships" lends itself to some nice interplay between Stills and Young, with Crosby's unique rhythm guitar propelling things along for nearly ten minutes.
They close their set with Neil Young's "Ohio;" a strange choice indeed! This, possibly to Neil's delight, is ragged beyond belief, complete with out-of-tune guitars and extremely ragged vocals. Nonetheless, the audience seems to enjoy it and is soon repeatedly singing "four dead in Ohio," as the group exits the stage.
Following a few brief announcements from Jerry Pompili, he introduces Wavy Gravy, who engages the audience to do their part in cleaning up the park. He ends his brief speech, with "OK. Let's Party!" anticipating the next band to take the stage: the Grateful Dead. - Hudba
I am so incredibly fortunate to have attended this event. It was amazing. Around a half million people! My friend and i worked our way almost to the stage, making our way until it was literally human gridlock. We each had a six pack of beer and people were eyeing the beer like they'd never seen it before, because no one could move or go anywhere. i thought they were going to jump us for it. But we gladly gave what we had, people were offering obscene amounts of money for it. But we didn't take any of it. Being at that show was a one in a million experience. Being in the center of that mass of humanity was indescribable. R.I.P Bill Graham.
And THAT'S a good memory?
Thanks Neil for posting this concert!
❤️🥰💕🕊️ Love you all!

RIP DAVID CROSBY .....
(Part of my youth has gone with him ....)
Best ever in my book. I'm an old hippie girl and know my favorites. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are my favorite ever however so many followed in their footsteps. Love these guys ❤
I HEAR YA ! SEEN THEM SEVERAL TIMES ❤
There are those of us who understand the times, the musicians and the music they made as a result of that very particular time in history. Those who weren't even born yet can comment and criticize all they want but unfortunately for them, they just don't get it and never will. Glad to have been around for some of that history.
I get it and I wasn't there. Its a feeling, its there for those with the eyes and ears.
@@reeceh78 You probably are like my kid he wants to understand so he does, all it takes is the desire.
I'm so enormously grateful for being born in -53.
Music 🎶 through the years have been both enjoyment and a means of survival.
But don't criticize ignorance. It is just that. These guys never shrugged from any public criticism!
This Musical History continues...🎶🎶🎶
RIP Bill Graham. Helped make the rock n roll era of the 60s and 70’s what it was.
Очень приятно слышать
Loving this. So heartbroken that Dave Crosby passed. A piece of my life is gone with him.
That is my thought as well. CSNY....will not be the same. God Bless You David......God Bless Music!!!!

David Crosby-rest in peace.
Even though tragedy made this happen, it was still one of the most memorable days of my life. The amount of talent that took the stage that day for Bill was pretty staggering.
I think we can say the 60's were the greatest decade in the history of American music.
I can't stop crying...the greatest band on earth..!!!!
yes, true
Saw them with my wife in '91. Only concert where audience sang every word to every tune. CSNY were blown away by it, as was everyone lucky enough to be there and experience that special musical moment in time. A total rush.
SAW THEM WITH MY WIFE IN' 91 TOO. MAN WAS I PISSED OFF AT HER!!!! JUST KIDDING....GOOD SHOW.
So lucky to attend the version, although I don't know their name,
I hear Neil Young, they can make jewelry sound ,sound famillar
We miss you David Crosby RIP. my friend
Omg! I found this surfing CZcams & said to myself gee I hope they play Teach Your Children Well. Low & behold it was the 1st song!!!!
Wow, I'm blown away as usual at just how good of a musician Stephen was/is.
Stephen still "is' ! :)
Great, great guitar player.
I read that at their beginning they did a couple of albums before touring, & when they did tour, they had to hustle to find other players, because Stills played everything on the albums.
Still brings a lump to my throat..Crosby's voice and Neil and steve doing it so good
From Moscow, Russia. First I heard Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in 70-th. I often recall in my mind their motives Thanks to I-net I can hear them again. Ecxuse my English. I am gratefull to US and Canada for such musicians!
These 4 guys together were always on fire 🔥 ,live and on albums
I was there, but as a member volunteer with the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic, I was busy backstage most of the time. I do remember passing Joan Baez several times and how each time she gave me a big smile.
What a show... I loved San Francisco and I was part of the crowd for a reason. Loving comfort keeps us going.
You don't love San Fransisco anymore? Completely understandable. The city sadly has gone downhill.
Thankyou so much for this it takes me straight back to the 70s went to California for a few months 73 again with daughter Luli in 86 never met Bob Dylan but the music was all around me...how I love these songsneil young Steve stills solo albums next far out ❣️🌹love the one you're with..
I was there at this concert. I remember feeling like I was in dream on Southern Cross, how powerfully Teach Your Children hit at the beginning, and how Ohio stopped my heart...
Now David Crosby has died, Jan. 18th, 2023.
We have lost a legend.
God, what legends!
I was there also. First time I ever saw all 4 together....as well as first time in Golden Gate Fields for any event. I remember the feeling of love in the crowd and us singing along to every artist's song we could recognize.
Love the cherished memories and the tribute to Bill and now to David!
Let their legends carry on!✌️

me too :). a free concert w/ the Dead and CSNY in GG Park? legendary send off to Bill G. ( i doubt these guys would have played anywhere together if not for the occasion of BG's death........ Bill Grahm died in a helicopter crash returning to Marin from Concord Pavilion show his company was producing...... i do not know what the show was but i can definitly see bill making the trip to welcome whoever it was. he could have stayed home but it was important to see them personally and welcome them....class act ....)
god bless you my old folk friends and brothers. love your music for the rest of my live. take care and never stop to play songs for us.
Long time gone, wow, what a performance.
Yes, a great one. That song always makes me cry a little, thinking about the event that inspired David Crosby to write it -- the assasination of Bobby Kennedy. That night is a terrible memory for many of us.
Awesome to see them all playing together! Great concert!
RIP David
Now you can write and sing with the other genius in heaven
Wow, over 30 years ago. I wouldn't mind going back for awhile.
This was absolutely spectacular to be in attendance on this Sunday in the park. RIP Steve Melissa and Uncle BoBo
David's voice was in fine form. Saw him play three years earlier in Poughkeepsie, NY and it was an absolutely amazing show. He sounded every bit as good as he did on the records I'd grown up with. Magical.
Poughkeepsie City of Sin !!
The musical genius glory of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
Best concert I ever attended was sept 4 / 1974 varsity stadium - university of Toronto. CSN&Y & the Band. Clearly Remember being there & remember exactly where we were sitting. Also remember smoking cashmere hash …. was super high. Opened their set with “Love the one your with” was great show the stadium was packed & all was peaceful.
Many CSN&Y vids popping up … it’s been few days since we lost David Crosby. Although I never met David kind of feel like lost a good friend. RIP ✌️❤️
Never again will you hear a band of such inspirational memories.
I think you are 100% correct. The best is in the past.
Thanks again Bill Graham!

*Music is a piece of art that goes in the ears straight to the heart.*
For those commenting about the lack of practice, this was a little more than a week after Bill Graham died in the helicopter crash. That they could bring together so many musicians on a moment's notice and organize a concert that attracted 300,000 people was a tribute to what Bill meant to the music community. I woke up that morning and walked over just as the sun was coming up. The fog was billowing through the trees. It was quiet, eerie and quite beautiful. Along the walk through the park, I was running into people who had flown in or drove in from far away.
This was a celebration of the life of a man who helped spawn a pivotal moment in time. So, people stopped their lives to go pay tribute to Bill. The fog soon lifted and it was a wonderful day for a heartfelt concert. Because I was there early for the entire day, I was right up at the stage. I could see only wall-to-wall people, many having climbed trees around the perimeter. It seemed like people were there rejoicing a recently passed era and what it stood for, but perhaps also lamenting that Bill's death meant the era was not going to return. That concert was a powerful day for the attendees and, I'm sure, for the musicians.
Fred Schaufele Exactly right! To allow some out of tune guitars ruin this heartfelt tribute to Bill shows these clowns are looking through the wrong end if the telescope. Probably did this pro bono, all of them.
EXCELLENT re-view.....I wish I could have been there....
Fred Schaufele I sure wish I could’ve been there w/you just to be a part of history that Bill Graham helped put together says enough for me he’s a god in my book enough said
And they sucked. Great for them.
What a day week it was! I was staying at a Motel 6 in/near Vallejo when Bill Graham's chopper crashed into power lines and knocked our power out. This was an amazing and historic concert on so many fronts. There was a lot of love in the air.
I was there, up on the bluff under the trees, I was 13 and had no idea how special it was to be there. I could feel it though, and this day plays fondly in my memories, as the years go by, I realize more and more just exactly why. I have dreams about this day, it was perfect.
it was my second week of college, I was a just starting at UCSC and I didn't have a clue about anything... I had to sit in the back of a pickup truck to get home wrapped in a blanket. A magic day that I never forget. Thanks for sharing your memory - they are gold.

I used to drive around most of the night listening to them, crying a little, feeling very strongly, wishing I was with them.. I Loved Neil and Steven Most but they all could Damn Well Sing!!!! And Write!!!
I thought David had the Voice of an Angel!!!!
absolutly
Great tribute to Bill Graham. Love the history and the music.
Really wish I'd attended this one but don't live on the west coast and it passed me by. Definitely earned a spot in my favorites folder.
So proud of Crosby for getting sober. Glad Neil influenced him to do it. Neil Young's singing has a sadness to it that I always love. All 4 , together or individually are my favorite all time singers.I just watched the documentary "Remember my Name" and recommend it if you can see it.
Sobriety may have saved crosby's life but didnt seem to help being a much better person
He's still a self proclaimed "Asshole"
Gimme those Martins! Stephen Stills is a phenomenon!

Can't comprehend the negative comments. There must be so many amazing and perfect musicians out there that I haven't heard of who can judge these guys. Oh wait, no critical fools who just don't get it. This was the boys as good as ever, raw unrehearsed and still pulling it all together. Legends, fantastic, rock on CSN&Y Rurv
Totally right Dr Bob I loved this band so much and still do They are simply the best 🎸💮💎🪐🌠🎹❤️💘🙏🍄🔥☀️🌔🐞🛸🪔🎸🪕🎻🥁🎧
love you CSNY then & Now !!!!!! & I'm 69!!!!
Hi, obviously I didn't seek out The Comments, esp. any negative ones- were they from Dapper Rapper-types, yawn or Hopeless Hip-hoppers, yawn...monotonous and sugary, maybe I'm getting old! Alas, I AM but I've embraced every new direction music has gone in, finding much of it derivative though...What ISN'T great about this band? Haven't watched yet but intend too as I only saw David Crosby when he was A Byrd and they played my little city, a backwater in Canada- I was in love with McGuinn but during intermission "only" got to talk to David and Chris Hillman- about clothes, capes of course! David and I love our capes! Namaste
"unrehearsed" may be "reaching" a bit to make your point..
Nash was never really good in the live concerts, especially when he was doing drugs and used to simply scream into the microphone. And any harmonies with Young included are guaranteed to be god awful. Individually they sound pretty good. Together they are a bit rough to say the least.
I was there! Was hanging out with some old flower children & they were crying hard when CSNY went on. Amazing concert! RIP Bill. #FillmoreDays #GreenApples #UncleBoBo
Some Old flower children lol
I saw these guys several times in the 70s...it's amazing how many more songs you can fit in a set when you don't have to run offstage for a bump after every tune...
Funny stuff Brian. A bit disappointed in the crowd/fan participation on some classic lyric but glad to see new kids out there are listening to actual music…. Or at least a/o the 90’s?? Well, we can only do so much I suppose… it’s not like we can just adopt em all and take em to a Dead Show. LOL ❤️
I'll bite. What's a bump?
He is referring to Davis old habit…unkind
David
What's wrong with doing a bump ??
Wow the music of yesteryear is so priceless. 😃
don’t miss the rhythm section at all, it’s the vocal harmonies that make their music so distinctive
It was a tearful day to remember Bill Gram who had died in a helicopter accident 358,000 fans gathered to listen to Bills fans pay there respects I was honored to work with the Deads Clean up crew the park was cleaner then we found it we miss you Uncle BoBo
Thats how Bill would have wanted it

I was there. That day was the greatest tribute ever.
What a GREAT Turnout fir A Very GREAT Musician🎉🎉😢😢😢😢
I was there!!!! ❤️💪🤩
wow.. all these years I thought it was Stills' lead vocal on the "Ohio" outro. It makes sense that it was Crosby all this time. Some amazing chemistry with those 4 guys.
I was there and it was a somber mood throughout to show with all the SF/Bay Area greats. Bill's memorial in GGP.
Crosby has best voice. Wow
Went to Neil's Bridge School show the night before... Then up to the City for Bill's memorial the next morning.
What a weekend of fantastic music.
I did the same
Please keep in mind everyone you are looking at here including the musicians were in mourning, all 500,000 of us. It was a tremendous shock losing Bill Graham for us on the West Coast, the abrupt ending his life by helicopter crash. We were all in a state of shock, it was not for the music but for the gathering, there was greatest sense of loss the music could not blanket out.
marshall de corazón You couldn’t have said it any better glory be
It was a shock. He was on his way to see huey lewis and the news. Bill Graham had many great concerts. His son Bill jr took over the biz
It was crazy sadness and heavy hearts for us who grew up with BGP, from the Fillmore Bill and Jerry handing out apples to all of us coming to see a show or in the panhandle with the Dead and all the bands over time on a flat bed truck, a generator and live music. I was with a friend who worked for
Bill in the office and we lived in Oakland. She asked me if I would pack her over on my Harley. It was the only way. We did a lot of lane sharing. Got to the back entrance and she gave the person there a big hug, and she knew everybody. She just told me to hang out. I did that, back stage and time went by. I don't remember leaving, but we did and we were probably numb for months.
Even the flying in the air stop to listen 👂👂 once in a lifetime❤❤

Bill Graham produced the most amazing concerts. He had great respect for the audience, and we felt that from the time in line before the shows to afterwards. When I was at school in Chicago, concerts were run as if we were all in prison. The police often walked up and down the aisles, often arresting audience members for the slightest offense. We were not allowed to stand or dance to the music. Flash lights were often pointed at our faces. Back in California, the shows produced by Bill were parties. His sister served soup before the show. Bill played volley ball along with audience members. Staff would distribute water, apples, oranges, an other items. The Haight-Asbury Free Clinic staffed a medical staff to care for anyone who over-indulged. The mix of musical guests were eclectic, so the audience was exposed to musical styles they had never heard. Bill and his organization made concert production an art form. His loss shocked us all. This concert was a celebration of his life. During the concert, a DC-3 flew above the audience dropping roses. Truly a Bill Graham-style nice touch.
I believe the rawness is the expression of grief, what makes it more intense and real.
God bless CSNY...the very best..these days are gone..the new youth ..its your time to stand up to the MAN....
i worked for Bill Graham doing concert security. i worked at many venues from San Francisco to Oakland stadium to Shoreline Amphitheater to San Jose auditorium. I have worked many special concerts that only Bill Graham can muster up.
I feel ever so privileged to have that job on my resume.
THIS concert was the most special because of the reason it was put together and by WHO it was put together by...Bills son David. I had opportunity to work with David a couple times and David is very smart.
I told David it must have been a pain in the butt to organize and David told me that he just put the word out and the artists called HIM wanting to play over his Dad.
THAT is respect!

Was at this concert. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young played a great set list and gig, along with many other bands/artists paying tribute to Bill. Meet Wavy Gravy up towards the front stage area before the concert started that morning. He gave me this cool psychedelic business card with a picture of Bill Graham in the center...with a quote underneath: "Thanks for the memories." Still have that cool card. Indeed it was quite a memorable experience that magical memorial day.
I had every album but my son as a youngster destroyed them and one way or another so these concerts on CZcams really really help him make me so happy
Thanks and now is the time for their music ❤️
I was never a big fan of Neil I just now saw this in 2020. Yeah I was wrong again. Damn he can play! He's Soo into it, typical Neil style. Now I have to revisit all his music!
His acoustic guitar sounds so sweet, like summer morning dew. Then his lyrics cut like a knife, lol.
Check out "Live Rust" all the old songs brought back with his 12-string and harmonica, then the entire Crazy Horse band rocks out.
Crosby had high great Voice. AMAZING MELODIC pitch .
They were superb from the beginning and just kept getting better and better.
Thank you for sharing this. Beautiful sounds and images. And it has been a long time comin’.
It will never beat 1975 in Denver Colorado at the Mile High Stadium general admission $6 with the combined band of all 4 . I still get goose bumps at how quiet the 75,000 plus were in the acoustic part of the show. Went on forever with the Beach Boys Prior and Jessie Colon Young jazzing it up as waling in and landing 100ft from stage.
Feel blessed to have been reared on this music 🎶 ❤🎉😮

STFU, LYING WORM
Back in their prime, nobody could touch these guys. Saw them (all 4) live at the old Capital Center back in 1975. Both Stephen and Neil kicked some serious guitar ass. Too bad Graham and David won't even talk to each other now.
And now, they'll never get that chance again. At least not in this world. Lesson to be learned- make your peace with your loved ones as soon as you can.
Was a great time to live in San Francisco...I remember this day...This show . The people that shared many great years in The Haight,Lower Haight,The Mission ... SOMA ... Thank you ALL !!!
So sad today!
Hey, wavygr! Mark Twain is famously quoted as observing, ‘The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.’ -about right?
@@karenmarian2910 yeah i was just going yo say something about the condition of it today. Sad that the representative would let these conditions remain. What happened to those people from streets of SF protesting? Did they all go off yo become luberal colkege professirs and teaching liberal crap beyond where people are logical anymore? Where did people learn about 31 genders? Climate change we must follow the science, only a heartbeat with a 9mos. pregnancy doesnt constitute "life"? Transitioned men can have a period?
Why do they learn such lies?
I saw them perform at Irvine Meadows in 1988. They sounded just as good as ever with everyone having a great time and passing a joint around in the audience. It was a pleasant and warm full moon night that is unforgettable with the smoke and smell of pot rising up in the air filling us up with peace and contentment and a unification as one of the same spirit joined together to create an atmosphere that can never be duplicated ever again. It was a special time in history to grab a guitar and play some good music that has a meaning behind it. I certainly was taken back in time to another place to be relieved once again. I have been playing their music on my guitar for many years now. And I would have wanted the chance to play along with them. With David Crosby being gone, that chance will never be able to happen.
Great songs, remind me of Woodstock, but unfortunately I was in VietNam at the time. Was able to hear the music on American radio. And Frank Bud and smoked good weed. How time flies
Welcome home 🙏🏼
Beautiful Magic in the Sunlight. Bill loves this...he always did, he Always Will:)
I went to this. It was an incredible day. Four days before, Ken Kesey eulogized Bill at the Halloween Grateful Dead show in Oakland. We sat on a blanket mid crowd, mid stage. A plane with Otis P Spunkmeyer markings flew over and dropped red and white carnations on the crowd.
