not bad for a guy with emphysema. Bobby Shew is one of the best musicians you could ever be in the same room with and an all around cool cat. God bless you Bobby
Loved Maynard's music in the early 70's. Saw him live when I was in high school in 1972. He was playing at Bowling Green University in Ohio. My two busied and I were on the front row right in front of him … cassette tape player recording it all. Don't know if either of my friends still have that tape, but we were blown away. The previous September, I had seen Bill Chase live. Never heard anyone with more power. When they did their opening number, he ended on a G# above high C. You could hear him over the whole band. When the song was done, he stepped to his microphone and pecked on it - it was dead. So, he acoustically over-blew his entire band who were all amplified. Couldn't believe it. A few years later, I had the opportunity to hear Doc Severinson perform with the WV Symphony. He did things I had never heard a trumpet player do. Also got to see Buddy Rick twice - once with Charlie Davis as lead trumpet. Marvelous. You see, there are a lot of great trumpet players, each with his own set of talents. And we can enjoy ALL of them without arguing about which is best.
Bobby did a great job! Any trumpet player who takes on a Maynard Ferguson chart has a lot of guts. There are no "Wimps" out there who can play a chart like this.
Bobby is just a monster player. Reads anything perfectly, great session player, solo player, jazz player. Go listen to some stuff when he was playing lead. One of the best lead players you'll hear. Just an tremendously talented and versatile player. The couple of times I've met him he could not have been more gracious. When Bobby played this he was well past he lead playing years. I hardly think he was struggling with this. None of us at our best could have ever come close to this. Stellar live performance.
way to much hating going on in these comments... This is live y'all, what are you looking for? Great playing all around, bravo Bobby Shew and the band!
We should put this into perspective. This was written for Maynard. It is probably one of the hardest solo trumpet charts to cover but yet Maynard used to do it all the time through many sets in his shows. Even someone like Bobby struggled through it. He is not a hacker by any means. A monster player in his own right!! RIP Maynard!
I've played with Bobby when I was in college. Back then, he was anything but stuck up. He was actually quiet, reserved and definitely not full of himself.
Bobby is really a marvelous player, and has "attempted" this tune "in-person" numerous times...balls for trying as I don't know many whou could. The Arturo version is "perfect" b/c it was done IN THE STUDIO. You can make a player like Herb Alpert sound good with "studio magic." In the studio you can stop and rest whenever you want and all mistakes are taken out. Bobby did this LIVE with no editing.
But Scooter did his live as well AND while an undergrad so let's not even go there. Bobby just had an off performance on this one song. We ALL do at some point but let's not act like it did not happen. Overall, he is a wonderful player and has helped a lot of players throughout the years.
I don't know what you guys are talking about the band was great the lead player i didn't watch all of that but he sounded great and the band was good, and bobby stumbled a little but look at how old he is and how clean and accurate and big his sound is.
Okay guys, obviously bobby was having a hard time with this piece but like everybody keeps saying this piece can be done perfect in a studio. And considering that this piece was written for one guy-Maynard-I think he did a hell of a job on the interpretation, he took a piece of paper with a bunch of high notes on it and made music out of it. This piece was never lyrical in any way and what he did by lowering some of the solo parts and rubato tempo was make it into a piece of music.
I am a big fan of Bobby's but whenever someone offers a comparison vid like cadillacdude, it's always good to go check it out. I found one w Scooter and UNT band and cadillac is totally correct. Bobby's a legend, but scooter's performance on this one particular piece, was better.
From this same session you can here Englebright crap all over "Danny Boy". This is one heck of a hard chart and there are not many people EVER that could do it justice like the Boss.
Bobby Shew is an awesome player! Point blank! I bet the people on here talking trash probably can't even play a third space "C"! Lol. All the hating is not needed. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the music. Like the old folks say, "if you don't have anything nice to say....... shut up!"
A good performance, but as so often is the case, why didn't the sound man turn up Bobby's microphone? The saxes and sometimes trumpets are drowning out his volume...
The arrangement is dif. and not as good as the original, but they are all still good, bobby is awsome, my teacher has his horn, and mine is similar to it.
Talk about an egotistical and pompous comment. Your name isn't Bobby Shew because Bobby is one of the kindest and humble players I know. You could learn a LOT from being more professional. If you don't have anything good to say perhaps don't say it. You talk a good talk but there's not much walking. FYI folks Mr. Thompson has been banned from plenty of the forums online due to his wonderful demeanor and the fact his ego's just too large to be contained in the online community.
The name of the chart is Maynard Ferguson's "Stratospheric". No one played it like Maynard did in 1953. Big, fat, amazing sound. Maynard was like no one.
I call this music style Musculr Dystrophy Music. It was the sax section that was outta tune. Flat mostly. The piano and the bass are merely manniquin positions in this band. Cain't hear them atall. At the end of the song, "Okay Bobby, you worked up an appetite. Go eet a cow."
anybody wondering why they let Bobby Shew take a dump all over this classic when Engelbright sitting in the trumpet "SECTION" GODDAMN. Check out his version on here.
Admitedly, this piece is insanely difficult. But of the three videos of this tune on You Tube, Bobby shew is a distant third behind Scooter and maynard. Maybe a faster tempo would have helped him get through this. He's shooting up and trying to get a lot of these high notes when the others just slam them out.
You can't compare scooter to Bobby or Maynard in his prime. Scooters not old enough and well Maynard in his prime is rediculous. Maynard himself would have trouble at bobbys age
There are definately players who can take a maynard solo and play it at the same level of talent. Take Arturo Sandoval, his range is even greater than MF's. And what about Vizzuti? He can play anything you put in front of him perfectly. I think Bobby Shew kicks ass. And I miss Maynard.
Two trumpet players should not be compared based on the merits of one live performance each. Two trumpet players should certainly not be compared on a live performance to a recording. Who knows how many takes it took them to get it "just right"? Ludicrous.
Yea I have to agree with people about butchering. I usually like Bobby Shew, but this is definately not his best performance. The band sounds either really unrehearsed or very stiff...
meh... this guy is nowhere near maynards perfect performance. yesss u guys thought ud never see maynard play his own name tune, well check my chanel i have an ancient vid lol. maynard killed it.
Mr Shew has one of the most pleasing tones, articulations and phrasing I’ve ever heard in my life.

Dude Bobby sounds killin it's not all about perfection. Yay for high notes

amazing. He’s just one in a million or more
I've played with Bobby when I was in college. Back then, he was anything but stuck up. He was actually quiet, reserved and definitely not full of himself.

@@chuckb9595 Scooter is da man. And what awesome guy.
@@chuckb9595I’d also add that in Bobby’s younger years I bet he would have killed this song, even on a bad day lol Bobby’s the man
@@chuckb9595 yes but even Scooter could not do the octave leaps (from high c to DHC) towards the closing...only Maynard...he was one of a kind...
No one can ever be as good as maynard.... He played at my school the year he died... Imwas so sad i missed him
Excelente professor...lindooo
Just awesome.
incredible.
scott's killin it!
You are exactly right.
I don't know what you guys are talking about the band was great the lead player i didn't watch all of that but he sounded great and the band was good, and bobby stumbled a little but look at how old he is and how clean and accurate and big his sound is.
I liked it. =)
i met andy martin at a tcu jazz festival...he is an AMAZING trombone player
thanks junkyman, i wish everyone had a level head for comparing like you showed in this situation.
The name of the song is "Maynard Ferguson"
people lay off him his bad day is better than your good day!
haha...i play on the shew 1

It’s not very good’

sounds like every section has their own tempo.
@chasefreak i wouldn't call the arturo version "perfect", which sucks bc he was in the studio... I thought scotty did it better live at UNT.
are u high?
What is this chart called ?
its called Maynard Ferguson
A good performance, but as so often is the case, why didn't the sound man turn up Bobby's microphone? The saxes and sometimes trumpets are drowning out his volume...
The arrangement is dif. and not as good as the original, but they are all still good, bobby is awsome, my teacher has his horn, and mine is similar to it.
@sornmwit17
I agree that Englebright should have played this one, but Bobby Shew isn't an asshole.
Talk about an egotistical and pompous comment. Your name isn't Bobby Shew because Bobby is one of the kindest and humble players I know. You could learn a LOT from being more professional. I like the faster version better. Not bad though.
no one can imitated maynard ferguson
This is a tribute band, not a try to imitate Maynard band.
The name of the chart is Maynard Ferguson's "Stratospheric". No one played it like Maynard did in 1953. Big, fat, amazing sound. Maynard was like no one.
Wrong title
He missed the last note at the end but great show ! Really really good !
Hi, very nice your music. where I can fuind your bobby shew mouthpiec???greetings from los cabos, mexico. answer me.bye bye
Amazon.com
i suppose abrasive is the word (lol)
because this piece is not published. otherwise, you can bet I'd put my version of this up here with one of the three big bands I play lead trumpet in.
I enjoyed the entire band Whack-A-Mole before the muzak started...
I call this music style Musculr Dystrophy Music.
It was the sax section that was outta tune. Flat mostly. The piano and the bass are merely manniquin positions in this band. Cain't hear them atall.
At the end of the song, "Okay Bobby, you worked up an appetite. Go eet a cow."
hang on dont lets get too critical here bobby is great but remember maynard was the boss no doubt
anybody wondering why they let Bobby Shew take a dump all over this classic when Engelbright sitting in the trumpet "SECTION" GODDAMN. Check out his version on here.

he looks and sounds like the trumpet version of Al Kay, a toronto based tromebonist.
that was bad, Scotty in the back playing 5th trumpet played this and it was a LOT better when he played in the one O' clock.
Where is Wayne Bergeron?
In the studio making real money lol
There are definately players who can take a maynard solo and play it at the same level of talent. Take Arturo Sandoval, his range is even greater than MF's. And what about Vizzuti? He can play anything you put in front of him perfectly.
I think Bobby Shew kicks ass. And I miss Maynard.
Good Try....Arturo Sandoval is a must listen:)
I disagree.
could anyone tel me the name of this song please
i have arturo sandoval version absolutely perfect
Great version but FAR from perfect and I'm a big fan of his but real is real.
No disrespect to Bobby cause he is a great player and he did a nice job but Scooter definitely shoulda played it.
Sucked “

Pretty sure Roger Ingram is killing the lead part. Sounds like him at least
@HEROxSabre no shit man. Scooters version is wayyyyy better than this one.
rough? fucking rough is more like it LOL
lmao do what he's able to do or shut the fuck up
meh... this guy is nowhere near maynards perfect performance. yesss u guys thought ud never see maynard play his own name tune, well check my chanel i have an ancient vid lol. maynard killed it.
this sounds pretty bad. I couldnt do better but shew defineently could. Scooter however owns us all.
wow. band fail..... shew doesn't know what the hell is going because the band is all over the place. ouch.
dude...i love maynard...but he has a terrible tone
dude, i can play this better than bobby shew here. it's not good.
then fucking do it! he's famous for a reason homie! I dont see your name anywhere so get lost and stop hating a living legend!
