Welcome to The Amish Potato’s Channel. My name is Cj Miller. I was raised Amish in Shipshewana, IN. I was Amish until I was 16 years old, when I started dressing “English”, drove a car and partied on the weekends. This is called Rumspringa.
I did this until I was in my late twenties. I then briefly joined the amish church, left again, and moved to Idaho where I discovered the truth of who Christ is, married my lovely wife and am now sharing my story on CZcams.

Never doing drugs is something to be VERY PROUD of!! WTG!! I too am an introvert. And one of the best things I ever did was to finally come to the conclusion that everyone elses opinion of me DOESNT MATTER. People are always going to "judge" others and have an opinion regardless of what I say or do. When I let all that go and made a decision to NOT let it bother me, it was very freeing. I can honestly say that i truly dont care what ANYONE thinks of me. God knows me better than I even know myself. He knows my heart and that is ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME. I wish that for you. ✌

Things live forever on the internet...hope your kids don't see this someday and think "it's ok because Dad did it." Even though you don't let them watch tv now, don't think they never will. That being said, I enjoy your videos!

So, Amish Potato, I was born and raised a Quaker. The hilarious part is that people will often say, “Isn’t that like being Amish?” And it’s SO opposite!
Haha. Yes we get compared a lot. I know nothing about quakers. Someday I will learn.
We have no central authority. We worship silently. Our silent meditation is our individual connection with the spiritual.
We’re totally in the modern world. We don’t really have rules. We accept a variety of beliefs in our meetings. The only reason people think we’re similar is that in the 19th century we wore plain dress. Not so much now! We DO practice simplicity, but the rules of the Amish don’t really seem simple to me.
One thing we have in common is that other religions think we’re weird. Oh-and if we’re drafted into the military, we are conscientious objectors and are assigned alternative service. On Memorial Day I always post about my father’s service as a firefighter and smoke jumper in WWII. Definitely in harm’s way, and people in the communities he protected hated the conscientious objectors and believed they were unpatriotic cowards. My father was powerfully patriotic, and cowards don’t jump into forest fires.
THE OTHER WAR: My father, a Quaker, was a conscientious objector during WWII. Cowardice, some think. He was sent to fight forest fires at a Civilian Public Service camp in Oregon. (He was from Virginia.) There, conditions were harsh and food meager. He spent three years fighting forest fires. He was definitely "in harm's way." Members of the local community were not friendly to the conscientious objectors, in many cases, even though they were doing the necessary and dangerous firefighting work of other men who had been sent overseas to fight.
One outcome is that he met my mother, a native of Oregon whose church group had a kinder view of the pacifists. The two married and had the 4 of us.
But fighting forest fires for longer than most military deployments was not a picnic.
And my father didn't refuse to fight because he hated his country, which he loved with a profound moral commitment.

Haha it was mostly because there weren’t a lot of dirt roads and we didn’t run out to fast.
What bothered me more about the first video, not so much the second, was the underlying assumption that all the "English" kids partied and got drunk all the time by default. You said there wasn't much else to do. Well, perhaps in your rural area, but in other places lots, many, most "English" kids did have things to do and didn't party non-stop, constantly get drunk, cruise around aimlessly in cars, take drugs, etc. We had studies to do, work, hobbies, interests, trainings, internships, organized sports, music groups, community activities etc. Not just church, 4H, boredom, and booze. In fact, your description of the Amish youth in the first video was of a much wilder bunch than I ever dealt with. As an "English." Really we're not all like that.
Yeah, I watched the Devil's Playground after the first part of Rumspringa to refresh my memory as I had watched it years before. Yikes, I never did that kind of thing. My excitement was swimming at night, camping, reading, baking with friends, and sewing too.
That was not my intention at all. I have no idea what the “English” kids did. I’m pretty sure they didn’t party every weekend if at all.
@@theamishpotato CJ I know, you said you did not do drugs. I know it was just explaining Rumspringa and telling us your memories. No judgement here. I enjoy stories about your childhood and Eli Yoder's childhood as well. It is human nature to reminisce about our happy times. By the way, you and your wife's garden is huge. Growing up me an my friends never did those things .we had fun ,we also had to help around the house .
They have a stereotype of non Amish kids that just not true
They take all the bad stereotypes and think thats being in the world. So its a trap a total mind trick. You will be around the dregs of society and be like I dont wanna be in the English world. Well you experienced the bottom tier and think thays all we are.

Just a respectful and friendly note .... it is my understanding that you are not allowed to post a photo of someone else without their permission, even though many probably do it and don't even think about it. Photos belonging to others are definitely not allowed to be posted without the owner's permission. This is a violation of copyright law.If you are caught doing this and are reported for it and taken to court, you can be fined $2500 per photo that you have used without the owner's permission. I know this for a fact. This is just FYI.

We used to watch the Amish girls go in the bathrooms and change their clothes. Gotta love small town Ohio.
Was that around the Hicksville area? I remember going to the teen dance club there in the 80’s and saw them come in.
How old are the oldest Rumspringa youth/people? Do they get to live at home for as long as they want? Is there a point when still being in Rumspringa is awkward? Do Rumspinga youth/people still go to Amish church? Why do the different groups have their names (Clinton, Topeka, and whatever the popular kids are called; "Clinton" always reminds me of the politicians and "Topeka" sounds like the name of a town or ethnic tribe)? Can two people who are in Rumspringa marry each other? What about LGBTQ+ people who grew up Amish?

It’s too late but back in the 90’s there was a movement call straight edge.
Some people still live Straight Edge, but maybe you don't know them. I would know because I've been living this way all my life. I don't know many other people who have this lifestyle, but there are a few. Not everyone who lives Straight Edge calls themselves that term.

I can imagine after years of "running around" made you feel "free" & how just the thought of living Amish (joining the church) would/could make you feel sufficated. Its no wonder you didnt wanna "go back" & live the Amish lifestyle. As long as you live for Christ I am certain you are living "right". It sounds like your young teenage years of "running" around were very similar to a lot of us "English". We did very similar things. I wonder though, did young Amish have english friends who taught you about things you werent familar with since you had only known the Amish way of life? 🙏
Since we came from a less conservative community we were pretty much aware of all things in the world already.

Occasionally but not very often
That's always the excuse they use "We're getting noise complaints." Our area to hang was so small we didn't need cars most of the time. You definitely looked hippyish so that's why they thought you did drugs. They fell for the propaganda too.

@@theamishpotato I'm in Massachusetts and 30 years ago a campground nearby wouldn't allow any male campers with long hair, they had a sign almost like the song lyrics "Long hair hippy freaks need not apply"
I know children who grew up without a tv (not Amish but Christian). When they left home they watched anything & everything on tv.

CJ, maybe the stupidest question so far. But can you explain how the language the Amish use, developed ?? Rumspringa for example still looks pretty German, and if you speak a bit of German (like me) you can see that it originally translates as "jumping around". Which is I think not far of from what the actual meaning is, as in non-conforming period of the Amish society.
That is a good question. Not sure where it started.
Since when Rumspringa scriptural? Where in the Bible does it show that young people should sow their oats before settling down?
Samuel walked with the Lord since he was a young boy. And Jesus walked with his heavenly Father as a youth when he was in the Temple with the rabbis.
