  • In 1912 a dam was built on the Elwha river. The dam created Elwha lake and provided hydroelectric power to the region, but also had the side effect of killing off all the salmon that use the Elwha as their ancestral spawning ground.
    In 2013 the dam was deconstructed, after 100 years of being underwater the valley is beginning to return to nature. Salmon are being restocked and are now returning to spawn.
