More funky smoke smell in Amsterdam or Toronto?
Thx for the clip of Amsterdam by night. A few things. The police does not enforce the law on crossing on a red light for pedestrians. Well, not if it is safe to do so, if you endanger others they might have a talk to you. In many clips you walked the 'Damrak'. It used to be very messy and all shops used to have massive neon signs covering the facade of the buildings. It was almost a competition between shops. When one got a bigger sign, other shops got even bigger ones (or flashing letters) to stand out more. About 15 years ago the municipality put a stop to that because it looked really tacky. Since a sign was not against the law, the city put an ordinance where shops had to pay massive taxes (in Dutch: precario rechten) per square feet of neon signs. Not only the size was a factor, but also the height on the facade (how higher, the more tax you had to pay). That way it was no longer affordable to put up big signs. In the course of a few years most got removed. It looks much better and calmer now.
