An example is the KALLAX and all of its friends - the DRONA, BRANAS, KNIPSA, GNABBAS and TJENA. Head down to IKEA to see it for yourself at the IKEA storage event, it might just change your life:) @ikeauk #ikea #ikeauk ‪@ikeauk‬

I've used 4 squares as night stands, end tables, and storage units - right now I have one in the closet that my cat's feeder is on top of, her food and other supplies are in baskets in 3 of the cubbies and the 4th has a cat bed insert that she LOVES (it's her little hidey hole). I put two of the 2-unit ones sideways, connected them back to back with home-made 3D-printed attachments (so the pieces won't move independently), leaving just enough room for a cable to pass through. On the inside I have an power-strip that powers speakers, music equipment, speakers, etc. and only a single cable goes to the wall.
I then had a company create a custom-sized tempered glass-plate that's a bit bigger than the area of the two shelves and used transparent rubber-beads for leveling of the plate and to hold the glass in place. The glass-plate makes it look much better and durable. I then added some of the suitable IKEA doors, that I cut the back off, so the cabling on the inside cannot be seen from one side. On the other I have my guitar-effects-board, so I can sit on my couch and practice. It's basically now a quite good-looking couch-table and I have wifi-plugs on the power-strip so I can turn stuff on and off with my phone.
I also purchased some tempered glass-plates for my other Kallax cabinets and it makes them look much nicer. Highly recommended!

target sells an off brand version of the kallax that’s just called a cube organizer shelf. there’s multiple shapes and sizes, and the 2x4 can be used vertically or horizontally too. ive had one for most of my life. when i moved away from my family and couldnt bring mine with me, i bought another. if you don’t have an IKEA but you do have a Target near you, you should go get one of these. they’ve been available for at least 10 years. if i owned a house i’d buy one for every room. my favorite use of these shelves is folding my shirts and pants and storing them on the shelves in neat piles because i have ADHD and i forget what i can’t see, so drawers are a nightmare for me, and i also like to limit what of my clothes get hung up so that i have a fighting chance of finding the clothes that MUST be hung up. i use it upright and i keep the top clear of permanent fixtures so i can use it as a place to stand while using my laptop, a place to put my computer screen and watch youtube from bed, a place to put seasonal displays or witchy stuff, a place to light a candle, a place to put plants or a vase of flowers, etc. target also sells organizer boxes for them, but you can really find them anywhere these days, for both the original Kallax and its target and walmart ripoffs.

You just have to make sure you orient it correctly so that the thicker verticals are inside the top board and base board, this is the standard way to do it. Came here to mention the inner shelves, doors and drawers that are available in different styles :)
Also, there are more sizes available than he showed, like 1x1, 2x1, 3x1, 3x3, etc, there is even a 5x5 which is tall enough to use as a separating wall!

Absolutely legendary shelf for flexibility. In fact: I have one in touching proximity to me right now.

There's also a cheap version you can get at Walmart, Target, and similar stores. They look exactly the same, work exactly the same, and cost way less. You can even buy the little baskets and fabric drawers at the same places
