Kibbe Simplified: Intro to the 5 Primary Body Types

  • After spending the past couple of years learning about Kibbe (and his lesser known predecessors) from ‪@AlyArt‬ and ‪@Gabriellearrudadesign‬ , I now understand it well enough to use this information as I make dressing and shopping decisions. This information is powerful and offers a way out of the endless maze that is chasing trends. I've enjoyed learning about it, and I hope this video adds something new to the conversation.
Also, I show examples of clothes for sale that I found on my Saks app. I chose this as a resource because Saks offers designer clothes, and I am certain that designers use this knowledge to design ready-to-wear as well; basically, I knew it would be easy to find great examples there, but you can find examples of these types of clothes in your own closet and anywhere else clothes are sold.

I am thrilled to have found your channel. Now I need to binge your videos. My daughter is fully gray with a stylish cut and gets compliments all the time. After getting Covid and having some hair loss I decided to let my gray grow. No dye for 20 weeks and I am thrilled. I really enjoy your presentations and as a 70 yr old who has dyed her hair for 1/2 her life I feel the power and freedom.

Thanks. I’d appreciate you showing examples on non-celebs. And I’d especially appreciate seeing older and overweight models. Not necessarily plus size, although that’d be fine too. But like for many of us we are dealing with sagging from gaining and losing weight and having babies. I’ve seen a few older women with great style and amazing outfits and clothes. But most of us feel a little silly from all the attention and judgement if we are not wearing something frumpy and unremarkable.
I am 5ft 3, and not overweight. My body changed. I used to have very narrow hips, skinny long legs and a short torso with broad shoulders but now I have a curvy butt with thicker legs for the first time ever.
Also, even when I was young and very thin, I always had a round pot belly.
I’m not asking for clothes that will make me look thin or anything else impossible. But I would really like to see more examples of older overweight models so that I can get ideas of what I like and learn to develop my own style.

I really appreciate this feedback-it is important to see this theory applied to all shapes and sizes. When I make some more videos on this topic I will search for more and different images. Celebrities are the easiest group to draw from most of the time because there are so many images to choose from and they often are dressed by professional stylists.
Based on what you’ve said, it sounds like you might look fantastic in the gamine category, but I can’t say for sure.

@@InfinitegardenbyBethK thank you! I will be so exited to see these applied to average women who are not models. Yes I believe I was the gamine type.
In another video for gray hair I mentioned my 2 wardrobes (home and public). Actually I have 3. The frumpy ugly conservative socially acceptable one. The super soft and comfy one in pastels and rainbow colors for at home. And my fantasy one that I love the most and never ever wear. I buy wild things that bjork would wear. I have sequined Arabic beaded halter tops and skirts jackets and trousers with elaborate constructed architecture (wires hoops and padding). I have made some things myself by folding them and sewing them into unique shapes and I have been spray painting shoes and clothing since I was a teenager in the 80s. When I was younger I never wore ugly conservative clothes. I only wore either the soft comfortable or the stunning artistic styles. But now I have been beaten down by living with fearful people. I would like to emerge from these oppressive shrouds and let my colors shine again. I will look a lot like bjork looks. I think if bjork and Oprah had a 55 year old daughter together I would look like her twin.

This is my latest obsession! I discovered it by way of color seasons (I'm a true winter), and found it very easy to type myself with Kibbe. I know that's rare, but I'm 5'9", so I only had the first 3 subtypes available (D, SD, FN). I have a very pronounced hourglass shape, so it took me all of 5 minutes to type myself as an SD. Now I'm choosing some pieces that suit those lines and people have really noticed! I love the idea of dressing harmoniously with your features and not trying to fit into whatever is trendy, which may or may not work for you.

If you cannot handle assymetry close to the face, you are NOT dramatic, if you cannot handle draping and lose your frame, you are NOT natural, if you cannot handle embellishments and frills you are NOT romantic, if you cannot handle strong geometric print by your face, you are NOT gamine.

Wow Beth, this was an amazing presentation of the body types! There are so many videos on Kibbe, and yet you managed to bring something new to the table with both the customer/sculptural approach, and how to differentiate between the types. Also, it was a clever decision to leave out the soft/flamboyant versions (for now at least). For a moment I was unsure of me being gamine (due to the classic's "keep clothing simple with simple accessories"), but the Halle/Tina comparison cleared it up. I think (I'm 5'3) 😅 But I definitely need to dress "less is more" or I look and feel like a 🎄 Looking forward to your next video... I'm guessing you appear classic when you wear you hair straight and dress for work, but natural with curly hair and more relaxed outfits. Can't wait to hear what type you identify with 😊👗👖

Hello, Mai! 🥰😘🥰😘 thanks for your kind words. I think learning about all of the sub-categories at the beginning is too much. I hope the sculptures and vases help to reinforce the concept-I wasn’t sure if that would be confusing or helpful.
I know exactly what you mean about looking like a Christmas tree. At this point I’m not sure what I am, but I think a classic or maybe a dramatic classic. Possibly a soft dramatic. I know that if I dress with those lines, I usually feel good. So glad to hear you find this interesting, too!

@@InfinitegardenbyBethK It was super helpful with the vases etc. The 'error' most do when presenting Kibbe is information overload and being too specific. How you kept it at the overall outline was perfect... once you "see" the outline it's much easier to add more details. I also really liked how you did the "2 tall, classic, 2 short" and worked your way from the "edges" towards the middle. Most do "left to right". I have a feeling we have yet another thing in common... being structured, systematic and logical when teaching or learning 😁 I don't know if it was intentional, but I also really appreciated how you said "Amal's husband" (I bet that was a first for him 😅) and "earlier in her life" for Streisand. Such an empowering way of speaking of women👌 Loved it all! 😘😘❤️

I think an authentic style reflects something from inside of us - our likes and tastes. This typology is based on what a person looks like, while it may be flattering I'm not sure it's the right approach. The type that fits you according to this may be one that doesn't have anything in common with your taste and personality.

    • @InfinitegardenbyBethK
      @InfinitegardenbyBethK  Před rokem +2

I think this can be true-you’re right that someone might not love the clothes of their type, but by trying on examples of all types you might notice that you like how you feel and look in a type that you hadn’t experimented with. I’ve found that understanding the categories’ vibe is more important than locking yourself into one of the categories for this very reason.

I'm a Dramatic and love the recommendations.for Romantics and Naturals. Now I see that those are not flattering on me, rather the opposite. When I use the Dramatic recommendations for hair and clothes, I feel better and people treat me differently. Every style can be worn by every type and still look our best if we follow the Kibbe or similar line recommendations. For a more romantic look I may choose a long, red dress without waist emphasis,, for lace I could wear a thicker fabric with larger details, if I wanted a more romantic style sometimes.
Here I may add that mostly Jamie Lee Curtis wore Dramatic lines in this video. Many of the long dresses shown were more the Natural type in flow imo. and the fabric was Romantic in many cases.

I just stumbled upon your video, and I must say that I love your presentation style and analysis 💐 Just wanted to mention that I did notice that other than the detail at the pocket, as you mentioned, there are colourful lines at the cuffs of Tina Fey's blazer. That brings more interest in my view. It would be so helpful to know how Eartha Kitt ended up in the Romantic category (which is not hard to believe) when Kibbe originally called her a Soft Gamine. Lastly, just wondering how Lucy Lui is now a Classic, even though Kibbe verified her as a Flamboyant Gamine. Did he change his mind of late? 😉

Hello! I love this comment- I learned so much. When I was doing research for this video, I saw one analysis that put Eartha in the romantic category, but I totally see her as a soft gamine now that you point it out. Much of what she wore leans on romantic lines, which honor that softness. I’ve also seen Lucy categorized both ways-but I’m not the last word even remotely.

Hi Breanna! You’re very like one of the short types. I found for me the easiest way to learn was to try on clothes from the types. Do you like how you look in color blocking? Bold geometric prints? You might be a gamine. Do you prefer curving lines and more ornate prints? Maybe a romantic. I like the idea of worrying less about putting yourself in a category and more about learning the clothing styles and playing. 😁

She’s between 5’2” and 5’3”, so she’s likely either gamine or romantic-and I see her styled in both types. She might be a soft gamine like Halle Berry. I say that because she appears lithe and not overtly curvy but she has strong romantic undercurrents that are flattered by lace. My guess is that she’s one of the gamine types.
