    Great episode Mason, thanks. I worked for an airline for 7.5 years, and had really good friends who were TSA agents that would tell us the inside scoop and countless stories over beers at happy hour. I’ve been a pro musician for 20 years, but full-time for only the past 2.
    When I travel with my pedalboard rig (which also weighs about 49lbs) I take out all the patch cables, XLR cables and power cables. I wrap the cables up and put it in my luggage instead of with the pedalboard. You see, the non-musician-TSA-agents get freaked out when they see all the wiring/cabling in the x-ray (think “bomb wiring”). As a result, they have to open it all up and inspect it. Because they have no idea how a pedalboard works, they rip it apart trying to find some verification that it’s good to go. Most of the time, they aren’t malicious about it and have no ill-intentions (although there are some bad apples), they just don’t want to let something harmful get by them AND don’t want to inconvenience anyone by denying their luggage from getting loaded on the flight. A lot of TSA agents actually have good hearts and take their job seriously (and of course some a little too seriously).
    So yeah, it’s a pain in the ass to take all the cables out of my rig, but it only takes about 15-20 minutes. I’ve got 19 devices on my pedalboard including power supplies, wireless units, wireless IEM transmitter and a small mixer. After a few times, removing and connecting back the cables is definitely worth the smooth transition through TSA. I’ll also disclose that I don’t use tie-downs and zip ties, so that might be a problem if you do.
    Hope this helps...

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 5 lety +2

      Joe Guam That’s some great perspective, and I appreciate you sharing that. Understandably if you work for TSA you have a job to do, seeing things out of the norm I’m sure throw them for a bit of a loop. I’m also sure that in the majority of cases any damage is non-intentional. Nevertheless, the musicians, through no fault of their own, end up being the ones with consequences for damaged items, with very little recourse to individual agents with TSA from my understanding. The biggest concern is that if the standard for having a pedalboard not disrupted is removing all the cables, it would pretty much mean that you’d have to have a rig that was always in limbo. For some of these more complicated switching systems, it would almost be impossible to put Humpty Dumpty back together before every gig. It seems like a far reach for most musicians if this is an example of the standard by which TSA is enforcing. I suppose that time will tell with regard to Benjamin’s rig.

    I remember seeing a video where Paul Gilbert talked about how the TSA kept ripping the pedals off of his board because they were looking for serial numbers so he decided to write a fake pedalboard name and serial number on the bottom of the board. Maybe you could start serializing your Vertex boards to help with this. I know Wayne Krantz has had issues with the TSA destroying his Vertex board too.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 5 lety +3

      tylerherbs yea, they’re brutal! I built Wayne two rigs, a wet/dry one for The Ringers and another solo rig. I think the former did fine last I saw Wayne, but it was tight and compact. The second was more spaced out and had some room for other pedals and orientations, and that became an issues at JFK. If only we knew then what we know now!

    I have a question: what does the mono mix do ? And how regular mono out differs from it?

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 5 lety +3

      Skylark Music Thank you so much! I think you’ll really dig the boost, although it’s not the most sexy thing on a rig, it certainly is one of the most functional ideas that we’ve ever put out and is still a standard amongst many of the top session in touring musicians in the world. The difference between most of the other mono sums out there is that they typically are just tying together is the left and right signal and relying on the output section of those stereo pedals to drive the line. This is not ideal. Although I think that using a dedicated left output is preferable to a mono sum, and simply re-working your presets to a hard pans when in mono, the mono sum provides an active output buffered mixer that mixes evenly whatever the ratio of L and R mix is on the last pedal before hitting the mixer. Most of the mono summing devices that I’ve seen are passive on the output and are relying on the pedals before it to drive the line or the input buffer if there are no pedals on after the buffer, and all and true bypass. This is not ideal from a signal processing standpoint, it doesn’t give you a true representation of the stereo image in a mono perspective.

      I think making it so it's impossible to remove pedals by hand. That means using high density dual lock, SJ3551, and leaving no spaces between pedals, just enough to clear the jacks, that's it. With the tier on the second row, that helps protect the first row from being disturbed. The volume pedal is literally bolted through the pedalboard surface so that's safe, and on the back where there was some space for hands to get under pedals, we installed handles to block off the access, but also protect the back row from taking a hit from someone walking behind the rig, or an unsuspecting roadie.

    Beautiful board, but still scary af when it comes to TSA disassembly and damage potential. Love how clean it’s wired, but the looming nightmare of pre-gig reassembly remains. Unless I’ve missed something. My philosophy is build it so it CAN be easily pulled apart by TSA without damaging the pedals and wiring and then quickly reassembled. Having every audio and power cable measured to the molecular degree and zip tied like that is BEAUTIFUL, but once that’s ripped apart, you are fuct on the gig, IMO.

      Well...I suppose the proof is in the pudding. The rig, up until COVID, hand't been touched with weekly travel. I think the biggest part is having as much sensitive stuff under the riser (bridge), and locking cables and pedals down as much as possible with tie down mounts. The combination thereof, whether you agree or not, seemed to work out for Ben. His rig was disassembled 80% of his flights, and last year, none.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 5 lety +4

      James Carreras Hey James! Thanks for watching! This is a question that’s been brought up in a few different places in the comments, perhaps the error is in me not arcing back to the thesis more frequently throughout the video, but the main objectives in creating what I’m calling a TSA proof rig, has to do with suggestions that Benjamin wanted me to implement based on his experience over the last several years with PSA. These are things like covering up all inputs and outputs using the second row tier to protect the first row of pedals. Mounting the heavier pedals, I like the volume pedal through the board with bolts. Creating a really tight fit between every pedal so there’s limited options to get hands or fingers to separate the equipment from the board, but moreover large equipment and large cases are a target for many TSA agents, so reducing size and weight where ever possible was also strategic. Any places where there were open spaces, especially on the back, we mounted handles to make it difficult to sit fingers beyond a certain point underneath the board where any sort of leverage could be had to pull something off. Again as I do more of these videos all understand have a sequence it better to park back to the original purpose of the video, I apologize if it hit the mark for you, but hopefully you learn something and less you can apply to your own rig I mean I’m happy to hear suggestions and other things you’d like to see in future and I greatly appreciate your feedback.

But if you’re trying to do anything along the lines that Benjamin is doing, there’s no way something like this would work, this would be more along the lines of a one off fly in date for something very specific, say a blues gig or something like that, I can’t see being able to do a lot of contemporary music with his set up, although it works great for him and sounds great for what he’s doing.

      Jan V I hear what you’re saying, but again as mentioned in earlier comments, the overwhelming majority of players have reported that the more complicated it is to remove products from the board, the less the items on the board are disturbed. Also reducing the size, and the weight, in some cases would allow for this rig to be taken as carry on, and bypassing the entire system. Again, I don’t claim to be an expert on TSA, nor an expert on understanding the execution of the various parameters that officers are to implement. However, players that fly regularly, Ben included, have said that the making things more difficult for the removal of items is the best possible way to build your board and ensure minimal disruption in between flights.

      Alex Groen The reality is, that those mono sum boxes never quite get it right because the presumption is that all the pedals are mixed 50% left and 50% right. The reality is, that in order to create dimensionality, many stereo pedals are not mixed evenly, and even in some cases will have different polarity on one side. The idea of mixing these evenly at 50-50 is a problem, and even though I’ve put some of them on interfaces, I’ve had to build a customized mixer to get the best possible sound, but even then it is a compromise and I feel that the consumer would do better if they created separate patches for hard panned mono set ups and stereo set ups rather than the mono sum.

    This is such a problem for me. TSA usually ends up costing me between 500-1000 dollars a year. I'm in LA man how do I enter some sort of waiting list to see the doctor? I have a board with some interesting concepts that I don't think he has covered yet.

    Tap tempo by a volume pedal is a big no no from what ive learned.

      JettyDeke Probably hard to tell from the perspective that you have from the camera, but that switch is about as low as it can possibly go, and this is a place where Ben is used to having it, so it’s difficult for me to redirect a preference of a player.

    How is this TSA proof? Didn't really change anything other than layout. Looks like a normal build to me.

      No spaces between pedals, anywhere that hands can get leverage = easy for TSA to disrupt your pedalboard. The tiered second row also overlays the cabling on the front row to protect that, so no removal of cables, or pedals. Back row was the most susceptible to TSA issues, so in all the gaps we added handles to eliminate gaps under the tier and near the volume pedal so that it would make it difficult to unplug or remove pedals. It also doesn't hurt that we made it more travel friendly by reducing the overall travel weight by almost 20% and removed 168 square inches in total size from the board while adding more pedals to the rig. Hope that helps clarify.

      That to me means that TSA may need to put stronger hands to check whether this is a menace or not. You are saying that TSA will give up if they find it difficult to investigate which is the opposite actually. Good luck

      Mariano Fernandez I don’t know the exact parameters that TSA sets, my understanding is it’s own most regional in the execution of some of the parameters and regulations. However, anecdotally, players have reported that the more difficult it is to remove things, the less problematic they find the condition of their boards at the end of a trip. Perhaps this is superstitious, perhaps I have a bad sample size, but in my mind what the customer dictates takes first precedent.

      @@VertexEffectsInc I get what you're saying, but it's not actually TSA proof. I think myself and others are commenting this way because your video title appears to promise advice on building a better rig for fly dates, but at the end it wasn't anything we didn't know. Not tryna be a jerk, but just a heads up. Be careful with those CZcams titles.

      The intent of the rig, dictated by the customer (Ben), was to make the rig as travel friendly and impervious to TSA mishaps. Ben laid out the issues he had, specially with pedals being removed that had more space around them, zip ties being removed, cables being disconnected. To mitigate this, he and others who’ve attempted to TSA proof their rigs, made the pedalboards as compact as possible, thereby reducing weight as a byproduct, but more importantly, making cables difficult to access or dismantle. With that in mind, the thesis of the build was around TSA Proofing the pedalboard. Now if that wasn’t illustrated sufficiently, it’s perhaps more a reflection of my editing more explicitly around the thesis than what actually took place. From where the recipient, Ben, is standing, the mark was hit. As a viewer, sound like it missed the mark for you. All as I can say, is that I’ll do better in the future, I’m still getting the hang of how to shoot and sequence these videos, so I appreciate the feedback. Nevertheless, I hope you watched and walked away with something tangible you can apply to your own rig. Thanks for the feedback!
