    Here’s a few Bonus Tips: (1) Any inert substrate is best, don’t need special shrimp soil which can lower ph which is good for caridina but not neocardidina. (2) You can use a heater but room temp (mid-low 70f) is fine. (3) Skip at least one day a week feeding and I even feed cheap canned unsalted green beans as one of the foods in my rotation. Any more tips? Let us
    Know!!

    Awesome tips! Can’t emphasise the rock pile enough. I’ve managed to keep the shrimp with relatively large predators (loaches, SA cichlids) and they form a small breeding colony within the rock pile - the food that drops into the cracks allows them to graze.

    Good tips!
    just moved mine from a 10gallon to a 15gallon - my wife insisted on catching them all using a shrimp net... and I do mean ALL - close to 200. Plucked out close to 100 snails from both tanks to give the shrimp less initial competition. There was around 7 or 8 berried shrimp, so I should have over 300 by next month. I am so addicted to these critters as I can put my face against the glass and they don't disappear.
    My #1 tip is don't fiddle with the tank once it is set up. Put your rocks/wood/plants etc in the tank and forget about them. Change 10-20% of the water once a month and feed super lightly every day or two. They will mostly eat off the moss and live plants and every other surface.

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 5 lety +2

      Quite the chore that was I'm sure, the new tank should be booming soon though!! I could not agree more about letting it be. When I only had one shrimp tank I would count the shrimp 5 times a day and check for any berried ones, and try to alter things. Once I started playing around with other tanks and not "watching the pot boil" the tank had settled in and not only were the shrimp thriving so where the plants.

    @TheOpelkoenjas Před 4 lety

    Yep, got the shrimp fever here too, again. Cleaned out a 6 and a half gallon tank - yes, I know, a bit on the small size but it's a starter - and made sure I instantly cycled it. By this I mean: I used gravel from my 47 gallon fish tank - which only contains a few fish but too big fish for these shrimps (danger danger) - and put a few pebbled sized lava rocks (filter media) from the big external filter there into the small internal filter of the nano tank too. Same with the plants: picked a few plant shoots from the big tank and placed them in the nano tank. And plenty of the Java moss too from that fish tank (it grows like crazy here), so they have lots of hiding places and lots of plant material to graze on. Boom, instant cycle. So I don't have to worry about water values changing too much and too fast (if at all). Ps: regular tap water (of course treated against chlorine and such), and here too it's hard water. Which is perfect for these little ones.
    It's been a while since I had shrimps, and after casually roaming around on second-hand sites I encountered a person who breeds them, close to my city (a 10 minute drive). Here in Belgium it's pretty hard to find someone who breeds these, everyone seems to only breed the expensive ones that need a lot more care (and very precise water values), and this person has an overstock of the wild cherry variant too, which caught my eye instantly. I immediately ordered 10 of them, but knowing myself I'll probably end up with 5 red ones too to see what coloration the future shrimplets will have. LOL Don't worry, I have a bigger (empty and dusty) tank waiting for them in the garage for when I need to start transferring things. Because when that baby boom starts to go off, I KNOW I'll need it.
    Concerning being able to keep the water values proper with 15 shrimps in that 6 and a half gallon tank: it shouldn't be an issue either. 10% water changes every week or two ( a few cups) should do the trick for now. It all depends too on how much you feed them and what you feed them, in my opinion. And keeping the (internal) filter maintained. Soon I'll have my sponge filters, but for now the internal filter that came with the nano will do the trick. If needed, I can still do a quick DIY and add extra sponge material in it with a small pump.
    Cheers, and good video! Very informative.

    Any opinions of feeding them zucchini? Btw, I feel having a lot snails helps them a lot as well. The bacteria in the poop must help. And they get all left over food. My 20 gallon has 50+ Albino rams. I agree with Aquarium Co op Cory when he talks about how snails balance them self’s out.

    Hey Ryan! Ok so now that I have some of your lovely shrimp in my tank....what exactly should I do in regard to feeding them? They are already attacking all the loose crud etc in my tank and on the wood in there - but the whole green bean thing etc....what was your schedule and foods you fed them there since they probably expect the same from me? I want to simulate what you did! Oh yeah - that wood is keeping the pH at 7 or a tad less...would a little crushed coral be good in there? I do not want to shock them - one looks like it has eggs inside and wow - I am hoping they get dropped and hatched.

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 6 lety +1

      I feed 5 days a week usually and just make sure there’s no food left after a few hours (they take longer to eat than fish). I feed crushed flake, shrimp pellets, and canned unsalted green beans mostly (I get French cut just because they’re already cut open and shrimp eat the middle easier). Over the next few days/week try to see if you notice any shrimp molts (looks like a dead shrimp but white/clear). This is a good sign and you can even leave it in the tank (they eat it). If you don’t see any molts or if you find a dead shrimp with a half molt then calcium may be an issue and try adding crushed coral. If your ph is low/need more calcium you’ll notice the snails turning white also. Green beans help with calcium for both snails and shrimp too

    • @WildFishTanks

      As far as the eggs, hopefully they’ll do fine and hatch in next few week. Keep me posted if you find any shrimplets!!

    So have you ever had your cherry shrimp play dead? I just got two babies, I have a one gallon nursery tank that I filled with water from a fully cycled tank and sponge filters that have been cycled before so they already contain good bacteria . I drip acclaimated them to not shock them and they both did well but the next day I found one dead at the bottom of the tank. I didn't remove the dead baby I left it in the bottom of the tank and it stayed there for two days in the same spot not moving looking dead as fuck, not a shell from a molted shrimp but a straight up dead ass shrimp but today I glance at the tank and see both the little guys swimming around. I don't live on a damn pet cemetery so I'm wondering if this is something cherry shrimp or shrimp in general are known to do.

    Wanna pick your brain. I'll try to be easy going.
    Have you tested the TDS, gH, and kH? If so, what's the results?
    Also, you mentioned you have high pH. How high is high?
    Finally, you made a vid, one of your first, about Cherry Shrimp population explosion, and it looked like the substrate was Eco-Complete. Yeah?
    I'm asking because my tap water's TDS is 94, gH 5'ish (100'ish), kH 5, and hard water at 8.0-8.2. It's difficult to get precision without spending a lot of money for testing. Aquarium test kits - API brand. And a $15.00 TDS meter is what I'm using; and maybe those are good enough. Thx.

      Some Betta fish will attack the shrimp and some will not, it will depend on the individual fish. Some other fish that MIGHT work with shrimp are rasboras, otocinclus, and bristlenose plecos

    Here's an extra for tip 5: if you only have a small, internal filter (mine is a Sicce Micron) and don't want to change it out for a sponge filter, you can "borrow" your wife's nylon stockings, cut off one end and put these on the intake area of the filter (make sure you only use the original, skin coloured ones, black or other coloured stockings have dye in them which can be harmful for your shrimp). As I have experienced it functions the same way as a sponge filter, meaning the shrimp like to graze of the stocking. When I started my colony with 8 shrimp I could always find one sitting on the filter. For maintenance: you will have to clean out the stocking every other day or rotate it so the intake is freed up again and a good flow of your filter is guaranteed

    Im super worried. I bought 5 cherries on Thursday- two died on the way home, and one died today (I found him after cleaning the tank). I put my female shrimp, Mama, in a breeder box today. She was pregnant with some mossy colored eggs when I bought her (I didnt realize until after I paid) and so I want to make sure my Danios dont eat her babies... I put my male shrimp Harold in with her, too. I noticed that she has about half as many eggs as before.... Is it normal for them to drop some eggs if they're stressed? Not all, but some? I really want her babies to live, so I made the box as comfy as possible.... Gravel in the bottom with two small fake plants and two rocks.

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 5 lety

      Not sure if they can drop only some of the eggs but it sounds possible. I do know they can drop them all if they are stressed. Sounds like you have them setup now in a more comfortable spot and hopefully the rest of the eggs should come out fine

    Dear friend
    I am a new shrimp keeper as of about the last five months
    But
    recently I've notices some of my shrimp have something white at the end
    of their legs and they are swimming differently almost as being
    uncomfortable
    I don't know what this is
    Or how to remedy
    Any advice would be appreciated!

      The tank is cycled. I have 30 shrimps which were bought as babies. Been in tank for nearly 8 months now. I had one who had babies. I saying that there no breeding as effective as they should.
      Water temp is at 24c, no predators. Plenty of rocks and plants but they breed slowly.
      Can you help me or can you tell me your setup. It would be a great help.

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 6 lety +3

      my tanks are setup very similar to yours, right now they run closer to 80f or 27c but that shouldn’t stop them from breeding. Do you notice that your rocks, plants, and/wood have been picked super clean? Perhaps increase the lights a bit to increase algae growth. I hate to say feed more but if you get more biofilm going it may help. Slowly adjust the lights to an hour or two longer a day or skip one water change as long as parameters aren’t crazy bad

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 5 lety +2

      That is not true. There are some shrimp like Amano shrimp that need salt or brackish water to hatch but These are 100% freshwater always

    Hard water...!! I heard shrimps like acidic, lower pH levels... You sure about that...??

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 5 lety +2

      There are two popular types of dwarf freshwater shrimp. Caridina shrimp (crystal Red shrimp, Taiwan bee shrimp, etc) prefer soft acidic water. Neocaridina shrimp (cherry shrimp) like these prefer hard water.

  • @Ballacha
    @Ballacha Před 6 lety

    i had to introduce fish in my planted tank to keep cherry shrimp's population down... they are not profitable at all to sell. so i ended up feeding lots of adult cherries to my african butterflyfish. then i got a school of ornate tetras and a male betta to feed on the fries. and their population is till slowly growing. imo they are a bit too easy therefore not very rewarding to keep for fun, even for a relatively new hobbyist like me (10 month 2 tanks). if you have larger fish and you want to breed shrimps as live food however, cherries are fantastic.

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks  Před 6 lety

      Good point, they aren’t extremely challenging. Have you looked into caridina shrimp at all? Their colors are more diverse and they can be more of a challenge to keep thriving.

    • @Ballacha
      @Ballacha Před 5 lety +1

      Lucky Schmuck's Fish Cave funny story… I’m fine looking at individual bee shrimps. But a group of them together would trigger my entomophobia somehow… maybe it’s something to to with the stripes on their body. When I bought cherry shrimps from my local fish store almost 10 months ago, I was panting heavily just from looking at their crystal black tank next to the cherries and I had to come up with shitty excuses why I was acting weird lol.
