How do I record my retro boss fights?
I record all of my Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive) boss battles on my Elgato Capture Card. Retro gaming is a big passion of mine as I still collect the physical copies of Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive) video games and I have a lot more boss fights to showcase.
Why do I review bosses and create guides?
Retro video games were a big part of my life growing up and as I’m playing these games at my leisure I’m noticing some of the bosses are quite difficult. So one day I thought “Wouldn’t it be cool if I could show people how to defeat these bosses?!”. Each video I produce will provide a strategy of how to easily defeat a specific boss fight whether it's a 2d or 3d boss. Now watch the video and have some fun as I show you the easiest guide to defeating R. Bear in Streets of Rage 2. If you have a recommendation for a boss fight please let me know in the comments below!
How do I decide which boss to review next?
My decisions can come from the community or what I feel is best to split up the genre of bosses I review. I also have a soft spot for games I grew up with such as X-Men, Tazmania, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Splatterhouse 3.

No matter how good you are in this game, R. Bear will always get his first hit
It's his damn movements lol! First couple of tries with this guy I'm like oh yeah I have a good distance and then BAM! He's so quick
I once beat him without suffering any damage.. only once tho
So helpful! This guy just runs though me!
My pleasure! I always HATED when R Bear would grapple you and do his annoying headbutts.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions for a Sega Genesis boss fight and I'll see if I have it in my collection!
That Boss had a mean jab lol
He definitely does, it's super cheap!
This is like 3 strategies in 1 lol wow u did a great job again and just nailed it man😀😀 I love how u do these and make things look so easy lol
Thanks dude, yeah I normally don't do that but when I was looking at it I had some left over footage so I was like why not! Thanks again dude for the support you rock!
Amazing! I notice that recently about R. Bear's jump. That's my favorite game ever!
Very good strategy... now try that on hardest or mania, R bear becomes mike Tyson, roy Jones jr and floyd Mayweather jr all in one lol
Well damn haha That's actually a good idea for content wise thank you for that Los Namerales and I hope all is well during these difficult times!
You deserve way more subs with guides like this.
Thank you for the positive feedback B33FY2015! I appreciate that a lot man and I hope all is well during these difficult times.
And again, you bring the heat! Respect!
Thanks Elliott! I appreciate that a lot! Stay awesome dude!
Oh boy, Bear was PITA, even worse than the Jet guys on SOR 3. I may take your lesson into account on my next SOR 2 run.
Jet from Streets of Rage 3 is an absolute nightmare, too much health, assistance from other jet..type people, and unpredictability!
are you talking about the rocket guys who cover their eyes like mifunes? if so you can actually insta kill them when they try to grab you at a level with a ceiling present
it’s actually really humorous seeing their brains scrambled
Nice tutorial dude, i never got far when i played this game.
Thanks dude! It's a tough game for sure I ALWAYS hated R. Bear, he's so aggressive and cheap! I feel like when I was younger I must of wasted so many lives on him
Thanks for this man, I've always hated fighting this guy lol
My pleasure and thank you for the suggestion! :D You rock!
I was watching one of those games done quick marathons last year and they said Max is the best for speedrunning because he does so much damage.
Yeah Max is insanely cheap, have you ever used him with the pipe?! He can literally hit strike people from the back and front. I'm not a fan of using him however just because he's so slow, great damage but yeah soooo slow
Retro Game Nova his back breaker is game changing. I feel they did a good job balancing his strength with his lack of speed
@@raidthanfl I am so sorry I didn't see this comment a while ago! I definitely agree his got a good balance! :D
Retro Game Nova all good! Im sure you get a bunch of comments. God I love SOR. Hopefully we see a golden axe 4 similar to SOR 4
raidthanfl id be happy with that too and in a similar art style :D
Cheesing with Max: Push him to the far right and stand on top of him. During his recovery animation, he will always uppercut, and Max's neutral special will give you I-frames to avoid damage. Then you can grab him from behind, Atomic Slam, and repeat the process until he is dead.
That’s awesome Zelfie! By his neutral special you mean the Atomic Knuckle?
@@RetroGameNova yeah
It works with skate too
Yes Rob! Loving this! Another classic game! 😎😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Planetugm 😁
Thanks for the tip, I need to go at him again as he exhausted 3 lives of mine 🤦🏻♂️
I'm glad this helped! :)
So the 2nd one of the imfamous 3 has been defeated ey? First Abadede and now R. Bear! Geez how much longer until the final crash man himself, aka Shiva becomes an easy boss? Seems like he'll be outta luck soon too, Robj can't be stopped!
Thank you so much Waluigi's WHAradise that made my day! I'm actually kind of dreading doing that boss fight lol I know how difficult it can be but I'm sure I can find a way to make it look easy! Thanks again for the support man! You rock!
@@RetroGameNova No problem man :D
Nice! I could only beat him consistently using the sword strat.
Thanks djbge! In the beginning for me the sword strat was a must! He's so cheap! I found out that butt attack exploit by accident lol
I also hope all is well during these difficult times!
I’ve been able to beat R. Bear without receiving any damage only one time out of the 1,000,000th time off played this game lol. He’s tough
You need to tell everyone what you did! haha
1:04-What Dr. EggMan Would Look Like if He Became A Heavy Weight Boxing Champion
1:06-Jump Butt Strike🤣👏👏👏👍(Ground Pound Was Copyrighted By The Mario Bros.)
1:11-i'd Prolly Call it🤔..."Butt Bomb" (Shh, Tell No One)
2:02-Wow A ShoryuKen.😨
3:33-R Bear Just Wants A Hug Now😢🤗🤣
3:45-Yeah, A Sword Would More Than Likely End That Situation🎻⚔😱
💪😎👍
I like Butt Bomb a lot and now that you mention he looks like Dr. Eggman I cannot unsee it. Thank you lol
Hardest mode, have the katana--- use A special to break both boxes after triggering Bear's collision, attempt to grab and suffer Bear's grab attack, hit however many times you can to throw Bear and grab the apple, he will start spamming jump-butt up and down, and extra Galsias will enter the screen. Throw a Galsia at him either by using a special to throw him backwards at Bear from the left of the screen to Bear or use a special to deflect Bear and then spam a handful of specials at the Galsia. It's best to corner one Galsia so you will not be spammed, but this one is not important as you will eventually be cornering Bear at the upper-right wall/port. The best way to lure Bear to the upper corner is to throw him, which can be achieved without Max by either maintaining the sword throughout, but you only have one opportunity to send him from the middle of the screen to the wall, as he will use his forward punch and knock your sword away, and in Hardest mode, the likelihood you will keep it is slim-to-none. The other chance to get Bear into the corner without triggering his deflection combos involves allowing a Galsia to cower in front of the door to prevent Bear from accessing the lower squares to dodge and parry, as he will not attack another enemy. He will eventually leave the corner by force, however, and you are likely to be at 1 life, 0 continue (no character swap), 1/4 Health--- so it's best to trigger a dodge, spam punch, and butt strike. Which will send him one row down where you can up-attack him in any event, which is enough to distance yourself as he gets up. Your best route is back to the wall where you can hopefully spam punches, side step two places to avoid triggering his automatic deflection and punch both the trapped Galsia and Bear simultaneously. I haven't personally used the back-attack to take down Bear a 5th time with any success, however if there's life in the Galsia still you can piledrive him for a final strike. Ultimately defeating Bear at this point is impossible unless you have one character swap remaining and you do all of these things with it in mind you will only have three lives remaining to continue through Stage 8- Enter the Foundry, collect enough Life-Ups to get to Stage 9, and it's smooth sailing from there if you can find a Player 2. Blaze is also the only one that can get through Stage 8 and succeed against Stealth and Souther with any consistency.
My sincere apologies on the lateness of my response - this is such an intricate guide, it was a great read. I find the Katana is so hard to keep playing against R Bear, he’s so quick that I had to play so defensively against him. He’s like Mike Tyson in a way lol I can’t imagine playing against him on Mania….my gosh!
Another strategy for Max is to try to keep R Bear close to the wall and move around until you trigger his big punch attack. When he winds up for the punch hit him with a shoulder tackle and knock him back into the wall, stand over him and when he tries to use his rising uppercut attack counter with the spinning knuckle bomb. Max will then be able to grapple R Bear just jump followed attack to do Max's atomic drop attack. R Bear will again try his rising uppercut and all you have to do is rinse and repeat until he is KO'ed
That sounds like a phenomenal strategy! Thank you Tully for sharing 😊
Bro this is the strategy that 1st came to my mind, the asslam one (yes because that's what it is and the name is smooth to say and funny), but I failed to execute it properly. Thanks dude
My pleasure man! I’m happy this video helped you out :D
@@RetroGameNova Thank you again :)
Never needed a guide lol
Good tutorial
Thank you DEE DUBZ! :D
Timeless game and great with double teams too. Im oldskool with games bruh. I used to destroy this inda mid 90s on my Sega Mega Drive. Clocked 1 and 2 and greeat soundtrack for both. Yuzo Koshiro is a great producer
@@DEEDUBZ Absolutely! It's too bad that Yuzo Koshiro didn't work on the 3rd game. It's still good don't get me wrong but the music wasn't as memorable.
My brotha, number 3 is trash. No Yuzo, different game makers and to disappoint the loyal streets of rage massive even more, they even included a limp wristed character. What a disgrace!
lol! Limp wristed character haha I feel like I'm one of the odd ones who enjoyed it....a bit! But Max was definitely missed!
Streets of Rage 2, level 5 Boss R.Bear.
Need tips on the rocket guy.
You got it!
Here you go -> czcams.com/video/fbt9701yAlI/video.html
I hope this helps against Jet!
With Axel you can Stun lock R.Bear
Against the right wall during his wake up animation with timed grand uppers.
I honestly feel his grand upper is powerful but broken lol I'll have to try that sometime
@@RetroGameNova its delayed
You have to walk back two steps then turn back into a grand upper.
Along those lines.
Gotcha! Thank you Omega Horizon!
With Max, and some luck you can kill bosses in 3 hits if he manages to grab from behind. You can jump with him and give them his wrestling
move: "Spine Ripper". It usually OKOs the Galcias too since they have low health bars despite difficulty (Even hard or hardest) though it can be tricky to grab from behind since most punks (enemies in the game) go for a frontal assalt or run circles around you. Keep calm, watch their movements and you'll make it further
Nothing is more satisfying than executing that “Spine Ripper” move let me tell ya! XD I haven’t tried hard or mania yet but I imagine like you said the “Spine Ripper” move rules!
Also! Thank you for subscribing DarknessXxMaster I appreciate that a lot man you rock! :D
@@RetroGameNova No prob. Have always had a love for retro games. They might be old but they still provide quite the chalenge. Hope to see more from you too!
@@RetroGameNova There's another trick to Max to get behind enemies too. If you manage to knock an enemy down, you can use the slide attack to quickly get behind them. Make sure their back is facing you as they are getting up and have Max hold that position. The game will think Max has approached from behind. Though it's more useful for taking down enemies with high amounts of HP--the ones with stars.
I managed to hit a Mr.X ith a Spine Ripper. You know how he fires the AK-47 in a wide pattern arc when he is on either side of the room? The way his hit box is, you can actually grab him from behind while he is shooting. I just still have a little trouble with Abadede. Any advice for him?
@@DarknessXxMaster Hey man sorry my original comment didn't go through.
Thank you for the tips on how to execute the al mighty Spine Ripper! With Mr. X I tend to hug one side and try to have enough space for him to shoot and then attack.
As for Abadede with Max I noticed that if you switch top or bottom after each time he attacks or you attack him you can defeat him quite easily!
Check out the link to my video for a more detailed explanation

Use the sword. Works every time.
The sword is super effective! BUT if you don’t have it, this technique helps :D
R. Bear was always a tough one to beat.
Very large man!
His height and his weight were never given. How tall do you reckon he was supposed to be?
He had to have been at least 6’7, 250lbs
Yes, I think you’re right.
We know that Axel is 6’0”, and Max is what, maybe 6’4”?
So yeah 6’7” for Mr Bear seems spot on.
His jab combos are a nightmare, aren’t they?
The jab, jab, cross comes so fast sometimes I can’t even get a chance to react 😂
The last piece of the puzzle for my SoR2 no death runs
I'm glad this video helped you out! :D
Nice vid
Thank you Elizabeth! :D
I used to finish him by katana. I love doing It this way
It's the easiest way to defeat him but when you get to Mr.X's stage there is no Katana Xd
@RetroGameNova There is a lead pipe, and that works just as well and if follow him as he falls, you can get in a 2nd hit while he's getting up.
@@RetroGameNova Me X is easier. Besides, I dint like to do It because of its easyness, but because I like to kill suckers the more painfully the better
I usuallu use blaze is it the same strategy as skate then grapple after acoiding the jump attacks? I usually burn thru half of my lives facing this jerk lol
Yeah that sounds about right, I always found grappling a bit risky though. I hated R. Bear...not as much as Zamza though!
im trying hardest and i was doing ok till stage 5 enemies seemed more aggressive and more likely punch through my moves. the ninjas were dodging everything.
Ninjas you cannot jump kick, like ever! Lol You have to be aggressive with them. Same with every other enemy, just be as cheap as you can 😂
Axel = Ken and Guile confusion
I can definitely see the Ken....but not so much the Guile. He requires some sort of flash kick XD
Capcom is the same company that made street fighter so it makes sense
@@nottyboy9713 it made sf not sor
it’s more like the blonde version of cody from final fight
R. Bear stands for Russian Bear.
Why is no one talking about how fat he is? and him being fat doesn't mean anything, why did the devs had to make him fat???
Thaaaat makes a lot more sense now, thank you sidgar1! :D
He's fat but he's strong!...hmm they're may have been a lot of muscular bosses in the game that might be why though
@@RetroGameNova and very fast for his size
@@yousef4746 that’s because he’s a heavyweight boxer, kind of the polar opposite for abadede
On the ps4 R. Bear has 2 stars. Is that mean more difficult?
STAGE 5.
Does this strategy work in hard mode?
I speculate no due to the speed increase of the bosses
But I could be wrong
You gotta hit him with the sword 🗡 if you can
Oh I know, the sword is awesome but you can’t rely on it just in case he gives you an uppercut or quick jab!
You right about that ! Them jabs be as scary as the wrestler attacks lol
That clothesline! XD
Galshias > Billy idolsss
Are you saying Billy Idol whoops those Galshias....or that they kind of look like Billy Idol?
Thank you!!! I fucking hate R. Bear. This is the point of SoR 2 where things get too crazy for me. I've yet to get past level 6 because there's just chaos everywhere.
ヘ(。□°)ヘ
My pleasure Jordan Dude! Are you referring to the bosses in level 6 where it's Jet and Zamza?
Do you have tips on how to win in street fighter 2? And also my sega mini doesn't have mortal kombat wtf?? Why not it's their best game and they keep it from us. Total bullshit!!!
I unfortunately do not Nick, the only advice I can give you is to Master someones cheapness like Sagat, I counter a lot of the jump kicks with Tiger Uppercuts! All the games you see me play are on my Sega Genesis with the actual cartridges! :D
Sword
100% Sword all the way!
Gave me a hard time for real, how is he so fast even tho he is very huge and fat? A man as fat as him shouldn't be this quick )X
R. Bear = Russian Bear
Should’ve been called C Bear, Cheap Bear 😂I could never dodge those lightning punches
