    Excellent videos. There are a number of videos out there showing how to pull a cilinder, but none like these two, actually addressing specifically the problems beginners come up against, why they happen, and how and if they can be solved. You're a real teacher. Kudos.

    Thanks, I made that first goof myself today in the studio, pulled too much at the top. I would also like to see more on how to shape pieces by adding a belly or narrowing at the neck.

    Dear internet! Try not to stay in the one spot for too long. You will get the feel. So finger in and out of pot slowly go up, not too slow, as you get near the top ease the pressure. If the pot begins to wobble on the way up ease the pressure on the fingers. Have at least six balls of clay in front of you so you can go onto the next one straight away. You will notice you will further up after a while and eventually get to the top. Does that make sense.

    Love your videos and talks so much! I actually want to know more about what’s going on in your Monday class lol. One thing I don’t appreciate that much.., you seem to scrape your hand to the bucket reaaally hard, the noise gets on my nerves every time. But it’s quiz and I move on to all the rest of good stuff:)

    HI TIM TANKS FOR THE TIPS. TO SHOW THE 'CHANEL' CUT A CYLINDER IN HALF [LENGTH WAYS] WHILE STILL ON THE WHEEL DISCARD ONE HALF AND SHOW THE FINGER POSITIONING AND PULLING MOTION NEAR THE CUT ON THE HALF STILL STUCK TO THE STATIONARY WHEEL .ITS LIKE SEEING THE PULL IN CROSS SECTION .

    Please try to show how to squeeze the clay in a way to make it go up instead of wider, that was the problem I had with my last pot, everything was going well until it suddenly got super wide.

    One problem I have is sometimes I am getting lopsided so that the wall on one side is thick and the other is thin. How am I managing to do this and how do I correct it?

    • @ng4349
      @ng4349 Před 7 lety +2

      Not the thrower in the video, but I might be able to help. You're probably starting to move the clay too quickly. If you ease into applying pressure when you start pulling, you shouldn't have the issue(And ease off the pressure when the walls almost done being pulled). Try to not move too much clay in one pull, you should have more than one pull

    a lot of times I get one side of the wall thicker than the other, how do i fix that. Am I just not centering right? also, I think I get the pot centered but then move it off center while I'm opening it a lot of times. What's up with that?

  • @timseepots
    @timseepots  Před 12 lety

    well there are a few options not knowing too much about your process. not using a fuzzy bat can help, centering quicker, or use a different clay. after you learn to center it wont be so bad. just suck it up little clay soldier and carry on =D

    today was my first day on the wheel in school and it was so much fun. i feel like i did pretty good for my first time! I was just wondering if there is any way to prevent your hands from getting cuts from the clay and the wheel because i have a couple on the heel of my hand. Thanks!

    Help Tim! I have one more way things can go wrong and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. When I start pulling the clay that is coming up actually separates. Any advise? My guess is that I'm pushing too hard???

  • @kandyapple418
    @kandyapple418 Před 9 lety +1

    Hi Tim, I'm a beginner and when I pull up, a ring of clay will just come off the top of the cylinder instead of staying adding height. Is this because my walls aren't wet enough? Thank you!

    • @timseepots
      @timseepots  Před 9 lety

      no it is that you are not slowly releasing the pressure on the wall as you get to the top. The most pressure is at the bottom and less and less moving up.

      @connorcaproon451 Před 8 lety

      You're using too much pressure on the inside hand and it's likely that your wall is too narrow. I would recommend starting with a rather wide wall, doing your pulls, there collaring in at the base.

  • @oliviaterry8155

    my teacher tells me to keep my hand flat on the outside, 4 fingers on the inside when pulling. every time I pull, i get and odd, wonky lip and thin walls.

    • @timseepots
      @timseepots  Před 5 lety +1

      Olivia Terry i got some new you may not like, keep doing what your teacher is asking you to do. Throwing is a process that works because of the steps from start to finish. If you change a little you may mess up some stuff. They also know how to diagnose what’s wrong while your there keep asking them.
