Product Review: Athearn Genesis SD70 Illinois Central fantasy paint schemes (August 2023)

- This is a product review of Athearn's May 2023 release of the Genesis version of their SD70 locomotive in two fantasy paint schemes. The Illinois Central black green diamond scheme from the 1960s and the Illinois Central Gulf orange and white from the 1970s.

Very nice loco's in good looking paint schemes. I just received a new pair of Athearn Genesis gp18's in Lehigh Valley colors. Chose the DCC ready versions so I can put loksound 5's in them, but am quite happy with the details. (although I always have to install my own action figures in the seats! haha)
Your layout is always so impressive. It's hard to remember that it's also very compact!

Agree...scale trains and the GP30 RELEASE has all this now...I cant wait for the IC and GM&O schemes to come out.
It's unfortunate Athearn didn't include truck lights on this run. I recently received the newest run of their MP15AC, which included truck lights, but the number boards aren't lit.
Thanks, Scott. I agree with you on the lack of upgrades. This particular mold for the early version SD70 has been in Athearn's fleet for 10+ years now with few upgrades. They keep cranking these models out with updated paint schemes and new road numbers. I hope they update the mold at some point and add the "2.0" upgrades like truck lights, illuminated number boards, etc.
Unfortunately the upgrades will not get done to the models because as long as people are buying the model they won’t do it when people quit buying it then they will get off their ass and do something.
I would like one in Canadian National livery.
