@@HuckFlynn Horseshoe theory is also a myth. You may want to keep that in mind.
Yes, with centrists (aka liberals) being the most “anti-gun,” for lack of a better term, it leaves the other parts of the horseshoe to pick an answer in a binary… “Pro-2A” or “anti-2A.”
Of course, the truth is less convenient than this - and the most sweeping anti-firearm legislation ever passed was the Mulford Act in California when Ronald Reagan was governor - because people typically are not monoliths unless they’re in groups (or on social media, which is more and more a groupthink setting, at the very least.)
My experience is that people who are “easily offended” or “pro-censorship” tend to come from the strictest of all political movements - neoliberals and conservatives (if we even want to pretend they’re different anymore.)
Liberals, as is par for the course, usually want to moderate the types of things that are socially acceptable or said informally.
Whereas conservatives usually want to mandate what can or cannot be said or done under penalty of law.
If you know a single leftist (mind you, not *liberal* but an actual socialist, communist or anarchist) who wants anything even approaching a flag-burning amendment, a book ban or a limitation on the use of recording equipment to monitor police and justice system officials, I’d love to hear about it.
Personally, I fall somewhere between the latter two of the three types of leftists I mentioned. As are most of the people I associate with in a political realm.
I don’t think I know a single leftist who supports *anything* like that.

If Maher is such a great defender of free speech, why does the most *TINY* criticism of Israel have the same effect on him as the full moon on a werewolf??!! Why does he *NEVER* have any Native Americans on his show?
Why does he almost *never* have any real progressives on his show _ apart from Bernie Sanders a couple of times, whom he kept interrupting with stupid irrelevant sidetracks?

I believe that love is always the answer and a sense of humor is a wonderful gift. Both parties' traditionalists are lost these days. So much hateful rhetoric from both sides. The spirit of the American people right after 9-11 was amazingly strong and unified. I wish it had remained. The desire to be true to one’s party, regardless of the absurdity of the stance, seems reminiscent of brainwashing.

Mel Brooks has talked about using Richard Pryor as a consultant to make sure he didn't go to far in scripting Blazing Saddles. An incredible work of screen satire that highlighted the stupidity of racism. There's not a chance in hell it would ever get greenlit today. And where might you ask did I see this film? On the campus of Swarthmore College, while visiting my brother, and attending Alumni weekend with my Dad. My brother had a radio show on campus where he played the Blues, and highlighted the impact and artistry of African American music on all music created here in the U S of A. Sounds pretty woke to me. Facepalm. Racism certainly needs to continued to be talked about, especially since the right has been using it as a major plank in their campaigns the last 2 decades. But censoring things to the point of dullness, and oh please don't hurt anyone's feeling, the needle has swung to far in both directions at the same time.

    • @Sujad

@@lewisbeshers1946 Racism was already going away. I remember in the 90s nobody giving a shit about racism and everyone just being cool with every one else. WAs there still racism? Sure. But it was being fought in a good way. You saw media of good characters who happen to be black or gay or whatever. Now, that they're black or gay is their character and it's both it's own kind of racism (tokenism and reducing someone to arbitrary characteristics) and grifting. Look at BLM, it's a literal grift that's now being investigated but if anyone criticized it, they'd be automatically called racist.
This breeds dissent as A) it posits that everyone forgets that racism is bad if they're not browbeat about it constantly and B) the people who were doing the browbeating turned out to be just as bad and as corrupt, if not more so than the very people they were criticizing.
All of this race hustling has done nothing but set back integration of minorities by years if not decades and it's largely the left doing it.

No. The human brains have exactly a department for self-censorship. It's called the frontal lobes. Without these, a person can be as barbaric as he could be and will jump into the next impulse without calculating the costs. Studies have shown that series killers and especially bull-dog-type psychopaths don't have developed frontal lobes like an average person does. So no, if self-censorship is the worst kind of all, why does the human body have a mechanism for it?
Yes, I do talk about censoring in all forms, actions, words and thoughts, the frontal lobes do that. There's nothing wrong with self-censorship in itself. With almost everything it's only bad when it's an extreme. Stop parroting something someone said just because it hypes you in the moment.

Jokes usually hit on our pain points & stressors too. We laugh, because laughter is a release of stress. It's therapeutic. And we usually laugh either because "it's true, it's so true!" (because if we didn't laugh, we'd have to cry), or because a comedian took a common point and exaggerated it to the point of ridiculousness, to mock something else being ridiculous.
I've always said laughter is healing. If we can laugh at e.g. racism, that means it's behind us, in the rearview mirror, and only getting further away. But if we can't laugh at it... that must mean it's a serious problem, and getting worse, which means we're regressing as a society.

He'd probably feel EXCLUDED, right? Because that's exactly what you're doing, excluding him from the fun, because of some warped idea that "they can't handle it." Ask him yourself, I bet he'll say, "I hang out with you guys all the time, and your lame dick & fart jokes, and you think I can't handle one coming my way? Try me."
Society needs to learn (again) there's a difference between making a joke about someone or something, vs. mocking directly. Stephen Hawking was a world famous figure, loved and respected. And plenty of jokes were made "about" him. (My favorite is the ERB video with him rap battling Einstein). But I think the pearl-clutchers fail to realize, none of the jokes were "LOL look at him, he's in a wheelchair". Because that's not funny. What's funny is accepting him for all he is, his achievements and his condition, and still making jokes about it regardless. It's true equality.

hey - you’re one of those who think for themselves!! :) i’d be considered liberal these days, but i remember listening to conservatives who were logical, sensible, and made good points. i heard my first conservative at CCNY (New York Univ.) i liked his ideas a lot. he’d be someone you could really talk to. there was a Black conservative in the early ‘80s whom i also really liked (wish i could remember his name).
real conservatives are educated and well spoken.
what we have today are rabble rousers with no intellect or education* !!!
( *what mean by education could be from a college or self study - only intelligence is necessary.) 🌹🌱

I didn't know that if your feelings got hurt by another person, you're entitled to a free assault and battery towards that person. I've been wasting all this time learning and practicing how to control my emotions so that I wouldn't do things that I would regret. I didn't know that people are supposed to gladly accept whatever brutal beatdown I impose upon them whenever I think that they might be the reason why my feelings are hurt.

When you attend a comedy show or watch one it's not personal. It's not about you. It's what comedians do, some better or worse than others. If you are offended, watch something or someone else. It's actually that simple.

Its also good to point out that its entirely unclear whether someone's feelings will get hurt if you say something, both to you and that person, so the alternative would be to not take any risks and try to do anything funny...In a comedy show

It seems we may have been deprived of a lot of brilliant humor.

"I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, "They'll be another one floating by any minute now."
"I was talking to my Japanese real estate agent. I said 'is there a school in this area.' She said 'not now, but just wait.'"

He's in some kind of weird tug of war though, you can tell he's a traditional liberal but struggles with the way the current trajectory of modern liberalism is headed. He's vehemently apposed to conservativism but the irony is that he'd be more embraced by modern conservatives than modern liberals any day of the week. This is why tribalism is so dangerous. Even when people know the truth, they are still willing to destroy even themselves over tribalistic and dogmatic beliefs.
