The perfect recipe for a great performance. One man, one guitar, a song for the ages, and sung like he wrote it that morning. So proud, like a brand new father.
Bittersweet. When my husband left for Vietnam in 1970, we played this song the night before he left - it became our song while he was gone. When he came home, he was so damaged, I barely recognized him when he walked off the plane. He left himself over there. Every time I hear this song, I feel the same feelings I felt for him the night he left and while he was away. It's eerie how it applied, too, after he returned home...Our lives are really mostly memories.
im so sorry to hear this....i thank your husband for his service and again im so sorry
Sweet, thank you.
+fellini2011 G-D Bless Your Heart! Your Love and Tenderness will last Forever! Ask the LORD to guide You Always Sweet Lady!
Things will get better for you Angel Woman!
My heart goes out to you both. Just keep on living and loving and hopefully peace will find
So sad, So many build up the soldier thing but it is actually throwing our young in the meat grinder of adult political mistakes. Nobody mentions the high percentage of veterans with PTSD.
Many long years ago I lost my wife Maxine. There was an accident, and she never came home. Although it's been 25 years now, I still miss her soft touch and the sound of her voice.
Thank you everyone for your empathy and kind responses. My husband, my true soulmate, never recovered. He was so damaged and we were so young that he could no longer function in society or at home. He left me and our marriage some months later, and it broke my heart. The last I heard of him, he was homeless and living out of an old VW van, somewhere in New Mexico. I really don't even know if he is still alive. I am barely able to listen to it anymore~because when I hear it, the memories wash over me again like a tsunami. And yet, it's still a devastatingly beautiful song. Peace be with you all.
There are many sad stories around right now,but this is one of the saddest and hits the heart even harder on Remembrance Day -Thanks for letting us know and when I hear this beautiful, tender song of love and separation ,you'll be in my thoughts.
Absolutely heartbreaking! I’m so sorry for you and your husband.....for what that hideous war did to you both. This is why I was 15 and hitchhiking to DC, etc to end the madness. That monster war keeps killing in so many ways, as you know. Like my buddy Frank Wagner who recently died from cancer caused by agent orange. War is a demonic gift that keeps giving. Love and prayers!
Go find him and play him this song he may miss you like crazy too.
You have such a great way of putting everything into words .... as a fellow sufferer of PTSD l fully understand some of what he might be going through ... go
God bless l was saying.... you are a beautiful person ✌🏻❤️
Classic tune, the kind you fall in love with the first time you hear and still love 50 years later .........
And John Sebastian and his wife Catherine have been married for almost 40 years. ❤ Special guy. Very humble.
The most under-rated composer
Like Terry Kath, from Chicago :(
Absolutely.
I wouldn't say Bob Dylan is under-rated as a composer. In fact, quite the contrary: he is one of the best to ever pick up a pen.
MT thats a good one👍John must have loved that Guy loved Spoonful wrote this song how old are you bro ps mad 😆
51 yrs later this song still brings tears. THE BEST!!!!
Me 2 😢
Love this song. The studio version is especially beautiful with the violins and orchestration.
I saw that on a rerun of the Ed Sullivan show, complete with violin's and orchestration, now nothing can compete with that, it was fantastic! Do you know if the DVD of the old Ed Sullivan shows are available, I would like to have one.....
Can't hear this song without choking up,what an honor it would be if someone needed me that much..
I'm 64 now... I remember the first time I heard this sometime a galaxy ago I cant believe the power of this song. Still has a special meaning not reverent to today, music what ever it is.
+Barry Kurkowski I'm 28 now... I remember the first time I heard this sometime a year ago I cant believe the power of this song. Still has a special meaning. I like to play it on the guitar too.
Barry - time has gone by pretty fast huh? Same boat you're in I am in. It's been a pretty good run though. Hope you're doing well today as you were two years ago!
Amen, Brother.
@@donnavorce8856 One of the best.
@@iowa61 For the great relief of having you to talk to?...?
Saddest most haunting song I've ever heard. Amazing chorus, both words and music. Devastating. Thank you John!!
Anyone that gave this a thumbs down is obviously a very troubled soul. Prayer's go out to you. Listen & let the music help heal your angry soul.
Agreed . Amazing song
Lost my love to cancer in April hated country music but admitted that this was out perfect song
This song is so beautiful and timeless, with some of the most touching lines - I feel myself in bloom!
One of the great under-rated performers.
One of the great American songwriters! And what a singer!
I agree. John was a genius at the time. Sadly, for reasons I'm unsure of, John lost his ability to sing at least a couple of decades ago. Perhaps it was throat cancer. He gamely continued doing shows, one of which I caught in the mid-1990s. He croaked. It was painful to hear given how gifted he'd been.
I hope he's doing great. He and the Spoonful were my fav American group along with the Byrds.
An absolute masterpiece. John & Arlo were the ultimate hippie icon's of the Woodstock era.
Yes Yes yes
Forever ,one of the most beautiful and moving songs, about the desperation of separation.
Celebrating 42 years with my darling this week.
Humble and talented, he comes across as so gentle, appreciative and sweet.
His songs are less about physical love and more about sweet relationships with his girlfriends. He seems to understand that relationships aren't just about sex. Mature songwriter. great guitar player and harmonica player.
@Jackie Striegel True enough. But looking at his career decisions, I think he tended to put his art before making a lot of money. Seems like the type to say, "Thanks, but no."
This man is pure class
Heard this on This Is Us, brought back memories of my husband who passed . He use to play this as a guitar player and singer.
Thank you for leaving his goodnight and the applause at the end
This song will always hold a very special place in my heart and transport me back to a time when things were great. I had never heard this song before until my BF at time used to sing it to me. Love this song
in tears listening to this today....brings feelings out...thank you john sebastian for these words.
Tears every time...
With out a doubt John Sebastian is perhaps one of the most important song writer ever .
Such a soft voice. I love this song
I stood in front of the great man back in the eighties when he did the GLC gig in London and for that I will always remember and cherish. John was about a metre away
I just " found" this.
Takes me back to and time and place when I was much younger..I swear I miss that era and it's music!
I think I saw him in Boston the next day. Delaney and Bonnie and friends opened for him at Nickerson Field. One of the best shows ever
Is this one of the most underrated tune's ever.??
Mike Hunt is underrated!
agreed...simplicity at its finest....
@@jimsteele2072 Mike Hunt ??
YES!!!
Absolutely.
If you didn't live through it, you'll never know.
I first heard this song and She’s a Lady my senior year of high school in 71-2 on an evening variety show in Cleveland, Ohio. Still listening and still getting misty. What a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.
what a class act! i love this man and what he sings!
Sebastian is something of a God to me. Alongside Dylan, Cohen, Webb and Lennon & McCartney the top song writer but also a great live performer carrying humour with him as he goes. Amazing to think I had a big poster of him on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager back in the 1960s. How time flashes by in a 'Daydream'... Now listen to 'Younger Generation', 'Rain on the Roof' and 'She's A Lady'!
Very good
I'm 59 now and when this beautiful tune was getting airplay I would have been 5 years old. I play this now and it's melancholy and melody is still haunting to me after all these years.
So humble yet so very, very talented.
Thank you. As fears fall, I can't possibly imagine the change your life took. Your courage is remarkable, your lack of bitterness unimaginable. I am glad you are still able to take solace in this beautiful song. Bless you and bless John Sebastian for his gift to you.
All these songs were my wifes favoritos, she lost her battle with cancer three weeks ago, feeling very lonly, bitter, angry at the world right now💔👼😤👫
Peace and love from Australia Louis , my partner
of 30 years is fighting cancer. Just remember
you are NOT alone , no matter how great your
pain. God bless !
Sending hugs to you,I’m sorry for your awful loss
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Hang in there. Best wishes.
We are here.
John Sebastian was a great songsmith and a performer.....you can't get his songs out of your head.
A beautiful song that is timeless. Love ya ! John.✌👍🤗
Favourite song from 1970, brings back so many great memories. I still have the album.
i remember hearing this on a 45 with the b/w having the rest of the song on it. Amazingly i also remember playing it on a "Winnie the Poo Dancing Record Player". Man i wish i still had that thing.
John Sébastien, beat the shit out of that Harmony Sovereign Guitar
At woodstock back in the wonderful summer of 1969 singing one of his great songs Darling be home soon what a wonderful performance it was.
💥🎸🎶☔🌞👏✌
Such a great performance of one of his best songs! His voice and acoustic guitar. Perfect match!
John & his songs bring a smile to my heart....
the man knows the essence of life
it's as good as it ever gets!
What a great Songwriter and singer Loved the Spoonful to short a time together
THANKS FOR TOUCHIN MY LIFE.FROM ABOVE
It's like something that's greater than him posses him when he starts playing that makes this come out so pure. Does anyone know what I mean?
I'm 71 ( for about a week ..) and have found very few "lasting " heroes in this passage through life..but John's definitely been one..might just be one of the few "human beings " amongst us...Ferb
All your beautiful comments of your lives and this beautiful song. I lost my love to someone else even tho I tried so hard. I pushed my memories and pain to the back of my mind this reminds me of how I still loved him. He is gone from this world now, but the memories are still there.
We were blessed.
This song makes me cry.
This has been a favourite for 40 years. Such a different time in many ways.
WE AGING HIPPIES OF THE 1960s ARE THERE.
YES , WE ARE ALL THERE. WE ARE ALL STILL THERE. WE WILL NEVER LEAVE , BECAUSE WE CANNOT LEAVE. AND WE DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THERE , BECAUSE FOR ALL OF US SIXTIES PEOPLE , "THERE" IS HERE , RIGHT HERE ; AND "HERE" IS NOWHERE. AND ONLY SIXTIES PEOPLE , MEANING ONLY REAL !!! SIXTIES PEOPLE , CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT HERE. "DARLIN' BE HOME SOON" CAN NEVER BE REPEATED , BECAUSE THE SIXTIES CAN NEVER BE REPEATED , RETURNED TO , APPROXIMATED , IMPERSONATED , FALSIFIED , COPIED , OR IMITATED.
From the film 'You're A Big Boy Now' this song has been a favorite for many years.
Brilliant song sung by John Sebastian but in all honesty I love the slade version on the slade alive album noddy holder really does this song real justice keep on rocking noddy and get well soon
hes a great song writer and he could sing
perfection...
thanks for posting!
John Sebastian is one of my favorite singers. I love this song. To me, it has an unusual meandering melody. It almost seems free-form and then comes back to the hook. I'm not a musician so I'm probably describing this all wrong, but I like the effect.
One of my faves
Beautiful tune
Good enough for a solo at Woodstock, good enough for me. I saw him this same year at Northeastern University, Boston.
He was the only reason i went to the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, brilliant.
You mean you didn't care about Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Doors, The Who, Lighthouse, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Melanie, Donovan, Gilberto Gil, Free, Chicago, Richie Havens, John Sebastian, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, and a few others? Seriously? My first trip to Europe. I'll never forget that show.
Jeffrey Genser I’m pretty sure she said her only reason.
Jeffrey Genser yes, the others were a bonus, I’m still in contact with him, a great guy.
slimwellie damn I can’t believe you replied after two years.
slimwellie also sorry for saying she, I just assumed wrong
Zo mooi,,écht, eerlijk ...een lied van waarheid,,,,ervaar de tekst, als (bijna) 50 jaar , geleden,,,dank je wel John Sebastian,,prachtig mens!...and Groovy, ofcourse now in 2023, peace and love💙stop Putin and Donald the Kid!
"it's okay to shoot the Moon" x
I believe the line is “I feel myself in bloom” referencing his self awareness in the verse. It’s tough to tell on other versions, but this one is pretty clear.
Brilliant
Fantastic, this tune taught me a lot about song writing..don't tell John..
He looks so happy that I picture him floating around in a 80s MTV video
Great poet
Definitely one of my favorite songs from The Lovin' Spoonful.
Today, with texting and cellphoning, NO ONE can appreciate the poignance of this song. They can't.
And....and....and John Sebastian played harp on the Doors Roadhouse Blues!
Beautiful song!
I saw John sing this song at Woodstock.
Must Have Been QUITE The Experience!!☮️✌️🌼
@@maureendrozda9960 It really was. I also saw him sing this at Worcester Polytechnic in Worcester Mass in September 1970. Someone from the crowd yelled out “sing all night” and the crowd erupted. I never experienced such love from the audience for a stage performer.
@@robichard I Just Yesterday Heard A Later 80's Interview That John Actually Did With Stevie Ray Vaughan - John Was The Interviewer On A Radio Show....! Who Were Your Favourites From Woodstock?? I Would Have LOVED To Be There To Sing Along With Country Joe & The FISH...."WHAT'S THAT SPELL??"....And Janice & Joan Baez....& Hear Santana Live! I Was Still A Few Weeks Short Of 8 Years Old - And When Neil Put His Toesies Down On The Moon A Month Earlier - My Brother Was In Vietnam! Crazy Times!
@@maureendrozda9960 Hi Maureen,
I remember Woodstock so well.I was 18 years old, so young, naive, and idealistic. I had the whole summer off before going into the Air Force. My buddy and I got caught in the gridlock of cars that jammed all the streets to the festival, so we parked the car in someone’s front yard and walked ten miles to the entrance. I had paid twenty dollars a month earlier for two tickets and remember being shocked that they were not collecting the tickets as the entrance fence was literally trampled down from the onslaught of kids. We sat under the blazing sun and watched the postage stamp size performers open the show which included Country Joe and The Fish, John Sabastian, the lowest paid performer ($1200), Carlos Santana, and Canned Heat. The whole atmosphere was surrealistic with everyone expressing freedom, love, cooperation, and a sense of responsibility that we all keep things safe and nonviolent. I remember the impact it had on us all when they announced over the loud speakers that the NY Thruway was closed and we now had a larger population (600,000) than the second largest city in New York State.
@@robichard I Watched The Documentary Several Times & The Most Striking Thing About Woodstock Seemed To Be How The Older Locals Spoke About You "Youngsters"....So "Nice & "Very POLITE" & "Well-Behaved", "Such Good Manners & Respectful" How There Really Was No Violence Like There Often Is These Days Depending On What The Event Is - The Type If Music Or Whatever & The Age Of The Crowd Who Attends...I Think Everybody Was Shocked About The Fence Crashers But Everybody Seemed To Roll With It Anyhow....
De days when you could sit and listing to a natural singer. No effects, no gimmicks , no flashing lights. When music was music. So sad of what happened to the music industry.
WALKING> IN THE SAME ATMOSPHERE AS JAMES TAYLOR< DAVID CROSBY, LEON RUSSELL
I love john and his great great great songs
I am crying for you both
"Wicked Pissah" fro Boston, MA
Great ode to trust, love, and marriage. '4 the great relief of having YOU 2 talk 2.' Sebastian real musical deal. Artist.
Almost exactly one year after his Woodstock performance wherein he was shoved onstage with someone else's guitar to play this one song, to fill in the time because the next group scheduled was stuck in the monumental traffic jam on the NY Thruway. John's wearing the same style tie dyed outfit that was his trademark. Another beautiful performance. i love this song.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE
brilliant
Lovin’ the Lovin’ Spoonful. ❤️
I would have LOVED to hear a mid-sixties era John Winston Lennon sing this one. Does anyone else agree?
What a perfectly constructed song! I need to hear it again and again!!!
Just incredible.. thanks
love that man
Love now, love full-on, there's no tomorrow for us
Awesome........just awesome.
My favourite forever 👍🏾❤️🥰
So many memories…❤
Can't be too many pop tunes, in which the words "toddle" or "doddle"appears...... or in any music for that matter! Great tune
He made sure to use the vocabulary of the English language
I couldn't bear to listen whileya freezing. TOP TUNE THERE MATE!!
Nice evening to be at Tanglewood. John Sebastian followed by Chicago. Their performance is also here on CZcams.
Good song this is also from the Movie "You're A Big Boy Now". Sebastian Rocks.
That's where I first heard it, at an all-night movie marathon. It was devastating, playing over this montage that seemed terribly desolate at 2 AM with the whole theater sound asleep. I've loved it ever since.
