Vogel State Park & Helton Creek Falls

- Wildlife and waterfalls! Mountains and lakes! So much to see at this Georgia State Park.
We decided to hike the Bear Hair Gap Trail. It climbs up to the Vogel Overlook, high above Lake Trahlyta. As we made our way through the forest we found streams with small cascades going down the mountains. There were millipedes, snails, birds, salamanders, insects, slugs, chipmunks, and snakes.
At this point the rest of the family headed back to the house, dogs included, but my wife and I continued exploring. We started by hiking the Trahlyta Lake Trail, along the lake, to the Trahlyta Falls Spur Trail, to get to the waterfall. This waterfall is spectacular and you can get so close! It's really an amazing experience.
Once finished circling the lake to get back to the van we headed down the road to see another set of falls. It's only a mile from the park entrance to the Helton Creek Falls Rd, but boy was it an exciting mile! We notice a few people standing on the side of the road so we parked at the pull out to see what was up. They had spotted two black bear cubs high up in a tree on the edge of this steep drop off. We spent quite a while filming them. We even managed to spot momma bear laying back in the woods nearby.
We did eventually finish the short drive(and short hike) to Helton Creek Falls. It's located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and is equally as impressive as the first waterfall we saw, though you don't get as close to this one, so it doesn't have the same feel.... more natural though. The first waterfall was manmade by the CCC I believe.

Agreed. Such a great area. Park is under construction right now, but once that's done it will be perfection.
