  • democracynow.org - Two Iowa-based Catholic Worker activists revealed they secretly carried out multiple acts of sabotage and arson in order to stop construction of the controversial $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline. We speak with Jessica Reznicek and Ruby Montoya about how they set fire to heavy machinery being used to construct the pipeline. They say their actions were inspired by the anti-nuclear Plowshares Movement which used nonviolent direct action to target nuclear warheads and military installations.

    "We acted after having exhausted all other avenues of political process and resistance". This is important.
    The pipeline goes against agreements made, and the presidents decision shouldn't be respected because he invested millions into it.
    It's conflict of interest.

    Americans have a deferential timidity towards sanctity of "the law", which is especially hilarious given the immorality of "the law" throughout American history. Genocides & forced displacements were legal,the trail of tears was legal, slavery and jim crow was legal, it was a legal mandate that certain humans were 1/4th human beings. No wonder this Pavlovian submission to institutional repression made it so much easier to create a fascist police state with the world's largest prison population where they hand you 75 year sentences for stealing tires and breaking windows.

      MagicKirin1 we should be ahead in technology . There is literally energy all around us literally . human beings are creatures of habit not always good habits either. We are so busy claiming rights to products money Etc instead of putting all our efforts into saving ourselves and technology for energy there are always better ways of doing things. This is not as good as it gets.

      MagicKirin1 That oil from DAPL will not be used in this country...it is for export only. Yea we will make money off it which is good for the economy but we would make so much more if we concentrate our efforts on green or renewable energy. That is the future. And not only the money but we need to get away from fossil fuels to save this planet...we are ALL headed to the apocalypse if we don't start concentrating our efforts on global warming....why don't you look to the future instead of the past

      Magic is strictly spouting the company line - their research is what it fed them. No, ETP did not follow all legal requirements - they constantly went around the law and suborned decision-makers. No, the money will not benefit the US - all corporations involved (multi- or supra-nationals with no loyalty to and state) have ways of avoiding taxes through off-shoring profits. No, they will not pay the price of spills or other deleterious effects thru crony companies/insurers - all costs will be socialized and paid for by the taxpayer. The workers - hah! All studies have shown there are a few temporary jobs, mostly during construction, and after that automation and skimpy personnel planning means only a literal handful of full time employees. Furthermore, this 'oil' is not only depleting what was designated as strategic reserves; partly due to high extraction costs, but is a particularly polluting sludge laden with way more dangerous chemicals than normal oil, so leaks are doubly dangerous. Even if it were sold within the US, it couldn't actually be used there.

    Quite Interesting. One has to look at the two faces of THEFT. That is Man kind's definition of THEFT. That is theft which is ILLEGAL and theft which is LEGAL. Theft which is called illegal and is done by those whom believe in self entitlement even to things belonging to someone else is done usually without the approval of a Hierarchy. Then there is legal theft by those with the power to do so, even by influence of the Hierarchy that may exist (such as the Justice System). This entitlement is enforced so that they who commit these thefts can do as they please with what is yours. It is the ideas rooted in Do It Your Way, Interpret Your Way and basically a call for doing as one wills. Not as what is or should be done. As this is the New Course of the American Way.

    My opinion: There might be a national need for this pipeline momentarily, but these people's rights are being railroaded and ignored in this process. They should be WELL compensated financially and a tram appointed for the SOLE PURPOSE of protecting their water from the process. Instead it is a FUCK YOU and your rights attitude by government. Am I the only one who thinks this all looks a little fishy? While almost everyone involved in these protests have discouraged violence and vandalism, these 2 self-proclaimed "catholic workers" show up on a syndicated broadcast to claim responsibility for sabotage while simultaneously claiming to be a part of the anti-pipeline movement? We all need to remember the guy who showed up in a pick-up truck, waving around a firearm, and posing as a protestor. Turns out, he worked for one of the companies involved in building the pipeline.

      Syria is a completely different situation with many different factors which mixes the need for democracy, the interests of the Syrian government, the Russian Government, the American Government, freedom fighters, terrorists and freedom fighters with ambitions for power themselves. Any activism against world oil recourses is a good thing unless you are damaging already flowing pipes that will pollute further. Prevention of pipelines being built is key to slowing demand for global oil and eventually almost an end to the use of all fossil fuels on the planet. You would love the government to do more but policies are shaped by the will of the rich and the will of the people. Hearts and minds of the people are moved by stories of activism and the people drive their countries policy if they are willing to fight hard enough against the will of the rich.

    Um, if this is true, then the acts were most likely blamed on the Souix tribe. That means they simultaneously sabotaged the tribe. The police grew more aggressive due to acts of sabotage. And the peaceful people paid the price.

      wouldn't presume to speak for them, but they most definitely worked very hard to discourage violence in any form. for instance, they employed the technique of chaining themselves to the machines instead of destroying property. So the answer is, Not That Way... these girls are dubious, very much infiltration.
      The acts of violence lead to improper arrests of peaceful protestors. Catholics have never been a friend to indigenous people. I am highly suspicious of any catholic activity that leads to laws equating protests to terrorism, which is a live agenda ... currently

    • @Spacepuft
      @Spacepuft Před 6 lety +1

      Artstrology You won't presume to speak for the tribe, but you'll presume to speak for the police as to why they grew more aggressive toward the tribe. I guess what we're really arguing though, is whether the girls crossed the line with their actions by destroying equipment. And I presume... that I think it's acceptable and you do not. I guess I feel that the industry, and as well this specific company, have no problem with the destruction of land, ecosystems, and communities, so why have regard for their equipment? It equals time and money for them, nothing more.

    • @artstrology
      @artstrology Před 6 lety

      Neither do I speak for the police who have repeatedly stated that the need for more resources and excuse for mass arrests were to protect from violence...and are edging toward labeling protestors "terrorists" for some time.
      The violence game will never defeat violence. If there is one thing with abundant self evidence it is that.
      Most often these days, when violence occurs during protest, it is infiltrators doing the deed to control the opposition. This has been the case for many decades. In Standing Rock it was Black Swan and others who are certainly Christian based. All the more reason to be suspicious of these two.
      I take it you are young and new to your outrage. I suggest you channel the anger at your local zoning board where these things find their origins. Obtain a seat on it if possible.
      The first rule of direct action should be "harm no person" but these girls likey caused much harm by co-opting a movement dedicated to peaceful action. albeit inadvertently. maybe....
      By playing the short game, sometimes actions can greatly harm the long game, which is obviously the only way to win. Try to think several generations ahead. By being non-violent, we isolate the violent and close off the escape routs they try to build for themselves. By committing violence, we enter the same dwelling and lose the PR battle. That will never work, regardless of how much passion we have.
      I advocate hard infiltration into zoning boards, judgeships, and offices of sheriffs, all elected and local.
      In my hometown, the judge ran unopposed for years until an 18 year old voted for himself and won 1-0.
      Occupy everything.

    One of the reasons the actual protest was peaceful, was because the tribal elders knew that acts like this actually facilitated a wave of new laws against protestors and even led to some claiming terrorism. This did not help. I question the motivation and origin of these two.

    This accomplishes absolutely nothing. Strange they are not arrested and charged with the serious crimes they confessed to though. And please stop calling these women "heroes", it's not heroic just dumb, they didn't even get in trouble for it apparently. Also, stop saying "ladies" all the time people, it starts to sound pimpy after a bit lol or like old fashioned or something.
