- A 19th-century French peasant girl insists that she has experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary. Once this sighting becomes common knowledge, Bernadette’s very existence becomes a religious and political hot potato. Thousands of people flock to the grotto at Lourdes where Bernadette claims she has seen the Holy Mother, believing that the waters therein contain recuperative powers. Bernadette dies under a cloud of controversy, but is ultimately elevated to sainthood by the Vatican.

The underground basilica in Lourdes is an astounding piece of modern architecture. The acoustics are amazing and during Easter celebrations it's amazing to see the enormous number of people it can accommodate. Even as an atheist myself it was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life to see so many people come together for a true celebration of life in all its forms. St Bernadette still holds a great place in the hearts of the millions who have passed through its great hall.
That great hall is really ugly & has no atmosphere... I don't think that Bernadette has wanted this...

It's an astounding piece of architecture indeed. It's a space that divides opinion though for sure. Some love it others really dislike. I'm in the former camp for sure.

I like this movie but I also like the old original one, The Song of Bernadette. That one where the Virgin Mary appeared at the grotto as those parts of the movie was awe inspiring. This movie showed a little more of her life in the convent of Nevers. I saw in one of the museum near whereshe lived her habit and the shoes she wore exhibited. I never thought her to be short but she was around 4'8 or 4'10" ? I'm 4'11".

Song of Bernadette is the best
The Song of Bernadette is a classic, but,it is a screen adaptation (a,very good one) of Werfel's novel. This is more historically accurate and is wonderful in its own right. I just,wish,the dialog was more distinct and louder. Seems Sister Marie Bernard can"t make a bad movie.

I like the kindness and love that all the sisters in the convent showed toward one another and to Bernadette (Sister Mary Bernard). God's very nature is kindness and love.
In real life, they were not always kind to her. Contrary to this movie, Sr. Marie-Therese (Vauzous) was often harsh and cold towards Bernadette, not her devoted fan and confidante!
The Sisters who were companions loved her dearly - it was the Novice Mistress and Mother Superior who for reasons not well understood (but likely due to her poverty stricken background and her darker coloring - they did not understand how our Lady could favor such a one).
Love the Blessed Mother! Never, ever let go of her guiding hand that will lead us to Jesus. Pray as never before - especially the Rosary (daily) for her intentions.

This version is missing the original opening scene, filmed in the chapel of St. Gildard where the real Bernadette is interred. This version also has an additional coda not in the original; all of the documentary shots of Pope John XXIII were added by the American distributor. The aspect ratio of this version is wrong; if you download the film, play it in VLC play in the 16:10 aspect ratio.

CannonfireVideo I appreciate your knowledge of this film. The opening credits were also changed. I have the dvd i got from maybe 12 years ago. I got the impression it was made more like 1958 or 1959 around the time of the 100th Anniversary. Another fact is that at the time of this film the nuns of the Religious Order Bernadette joined still wore the traditional Habit of the Order and showed it accurately in the film. Unlike the Song of Bernadette in which the Habit was Hollywoodized.
I also have asthma. So sad that inhalers didn't exist at her time.
Bernadette had cardio pulmonary asthma. An inhaler might not work. Also tb and bone cancer. The girl was a walking medical encyclopedia.
@svitlanasalo1179 - I have asthma too and at times an inhaler doesn’t work very well for me. There are times when breathing is really difficult for me, though not nearly as bad as what St. Bernadette’s went through of course. When I’m having problems breathing I have thought about her. It just dawned on me that I could pray to St. Bernadette and ask her to help me and pray for me.
I wish the volume was higher...so hard to hear.

You have it confused with "The Bells of St. Mary" movie with Bing Crosby.
The English version is the "Song of Bernadette".
In 1854 Pope Pius IX declares that Mary was immaculate in her conception and then four years later, in 1858, Bernadette declares the lady called herself the immaculate conception. Well, well well, what a coincidence! St. Paul wrote: 'There is one God and there is ONE mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 2:5)
But not only one interceder. Bernadette was illiterate, uncatechised and unaware of the term IC. She repeated it audibly over and over on her way from the grotto to Fr. Peymarale so she would not forget. Nobody repeats a familiar phrase. Two,weeks later,she was in the local grocery and asked...what does that mean anyway? You explain that.
God can do what he wants. If He choses then this is entirely possible. Who are you to limit God?

This movie told the story with short scenes. Yhe Song of Bernette acted out the story. Also they softened the authorities in this one a lot. Makes me wonder who funded this version.

I love St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. But IMO you can't beat Jennifer Jones' portrayal of Bernadette in "The Song of Bernadette." She had an innocent, luminous quality and even looked very much like her. Bernadette was 14 when the apparitions occurred. This actress looks and acts too old and doesn't resemble Bernadette in the least. To me she was stiff and unconvincing. Terribly miscast! And the empty hole in the grotto was also disappointing.

Beautiful movie. Unfortunately, it was ruined by having John XXIII at the end. In the Vatican files he was listed as suspect of modernism and was seen going into Masonic lodges. The Freemasons praised his encyclical, Pacem in Terris.

If veneration of the Immaculate Conception offends and rankles you, why are you on here? Your keyboard, Protestant theology, convinces no one.

Ask yourself -- to whom did God ever send His Archangel to declare "Hail -- full of grace, the Lord is with thee"? God's Word is true and perfect. The Mother He chose for His only-begotten Son must be perfect in every way. If God has recognized her as worthy for this, then we fail Him if we dismiss her as an ordinary everyday girl like any other.
