      Because they keep a tight lid on their conditions, and pet stores are a convenience when it comes to getting animals. It's quicker than going to a private breeder or finding a rescue center, and most people don't actually do any research like they should before trying to take care of an animal. There's basically no pushback other than from animal rights groups because they're the only ones who have bothered to look into it.

    I have said it before, and will say it again: Danish ferret breeders will happily ship kits to the US. It happens pretty much every year. We do not have commercial ferret breeders in DK. It's very rare to find ferrets in Pet stores. We have several well established and repuatable breeders. My breeder (who's also one of my very best friends) sends kits to countries all around Europe every year, and have even send a few to the US before. It's expensive. Yes. But it's a much better alternative than Marshalls.

I'm glad that you could make this video to make your opinions so clear and firm and I agree with you completely on everything you said. When you're an adult and can afford it, you can get all the shelter animals you want. I own 5 and would not buy a child a shelter ferret. too many behavioral problems. If it's your first and only ferret, that is not the way to go for someone with no ferret experience. See my post above about my rescue ferret. It took more than 2 months with the help of my 4 other ferrets to socialize her. It can't imagine how long it would have taken if she was the first and only one.

      ferrets need to eat, bone, organs, and heart in order to have a balanced helathy diet. you cannot just grab ground beef and chicken breast from the store. your ferret would be malnourished and could get very sick. at that point you would be better off feeding kibble because at least then your ferret would have a balanced diet. most grocery stores do not sell bones, organ & heart because humans do not consume those parts of the animal. & as said before there is no “on budget” for ferrets, they are very expensive animals. $1,000 startup cost with the cage, toys, grooming supplies, hammocks, beds, ect. their food if it’s kibble or raw is also an expensive constant cost. don’t get ferrets unless you are financially stable.

      4-6 hours is not enough for ferrets. You might have to give them lots of free roam time (about 7-8 hours minimum) or they will be depressed and might show cage rage which can cause aggression. If you can’t provide lots of time, rethink about getting ferrets. Hope this helped! :)

      That's not what happens. I've worked at petco and petsmart. They keep them till someone buys them. It'd be way too expensive to ship animals back to their breeder, let alone to a huge company such as Marshall farms. The Pet store already purchased them, so after that transaction you sign a contact that says the breeder is no longer held responsible for anything that happens with the animals.

    The really disappointing thing about this is, the only way to stop this, is pet stores quit selling Marshall products, and people stop buying them. After doing Rescue and adopting Ferrets for nearly 25 years, I learned fast that when one saw the dreaded double dot ear Tattoo in a ferrets ear ( 90% have it ) meant that in short order, they would suffer many terrible illnesses ( due to the inbreeding ) such as Adrenal disease, insulinoma etc. Sometime a younger ferret ( as young as 2 or 3 ) would show the signs and virtually all older ferrets ( 5 & up ) would... And often, some of the medicines were very pricey! And there never seemed to be enough Veterinarians who were very familiar with ferrets. I remember one who moments after she walked into the examination room asked, 'Does it BITE!!? I promptly grabbed the patient and walked out. While you did as good a job as you could with this video- all the blame shouldn't be directed at the big breeders. People... cause more suffering to their pets ( often unintentionally ) because no matter how much they ( think ) they know about them.. more often than not.. they're woefully lacking. Ferrets ( in my opinion ) should NOT be owned by most people. Why? Because they're EXTREMELY delicate! They're easily injured ( especially their spines and their eyes ) even simply by bouncing the ferret around ( as your doing by way of example ) by those who do so roughly.. often dropping the poor animal. Older ferrets should never be handled this way. One must remember that a month to a ferret equals a year. 12 months equals 12 years. A 5 year old ferret in ferret years is 60. After that age? Especially by age 6 ( 72 ) for a ferret.. a month is like 15 months and they age fast. REAL fast. Nobody ever mentions that ferrets catch human colds. Just a bad cold ( never mind a flu ) will make a ferret stop eating.. A day without eating ( 24-hr.s ) is like a week for us. The ferret can get ulcerations in their stomach from acid ( they have VERY strong stomach acids ) and unless you have the patience, and know how to make the famous 'Duck Soup' to hand feed them ( including in the middle of the night )... the ferret can suffer much- and die. Ferrets are sensitive to bright light and loud noise. GREAT suffering if they're owned by 'party people' ( half of human kind right there. Heat ( over 80 ) and cold ( under 45* affects them adversely, so take your ferret outside on a cold day or hot & muggy summer day and make them suffer. They are no longer 'hearty' polecats as it's all been beaten/bred out of them. They should NEVER be 'shampooed'... PERIOD. Do you shampoo your cat? A ferrets skin dries out from shampooing which makes them NATURALLY secrete oil that can make them smell faintly musky but it lasts for hours or days. So just keep 'shampooing' your ferret. They clean themselves like cats. And virtually ALL of the ferret treats ( sold in most pet stores ) are a death sentence over time. I found all this out the first decade. I never give them 'tap water' because the amount of chemicals they put in ( our city has one of the highest levels of FLOURIDE in the U.S. ) which stays in our ( their ) systems and does long term damage. I have seen a marked increase in the health, longetivity and happiness in many ferrets the last 15 years by changing these things I've just mentioned. And lastly? They NEED to move. 250 to 275 heartbeats a minute.. a high level of energy that MUST be burned off ( when the ferret feels like it-NOT when people want to wake them up to play! ) Years ago.. Ferrets I had were secluded to one or two rooms ( with 'outings into a WELL ferret proofed home for an hour or more ) One last note.. The only times my ferrets go 'out' is to the Vet ( monthly checkups because they're also prone to cancers like lymphoma ) and so often people give me that ( pardon me ) idiotic grin- then say the 'magic words' I used to know someone who had a ferret.. or I used to have a ferret.. Within 60 seconds I realize from brief conversation.. they ( nor their buddies ) know or knew ANYTHING about ferrets, except they found them 'amusing' ( when it suited them ) then dumped it when it got injured or sick.. My current vet ( who I try to work closely with ) has broken ground the last 12 years in the treatment of ferret illnesses & diseases..

    It's a nice thought that Petco employees wouldn't abuse animals because it's illegal and wouldn't be allowed to happen. I've read many stories from ex-employees and it seems that while some stores have a whole team of employees that do their best and get sick animals care, others choose to hide sick animals away in the back while they delay or just refuse to treat them, until they "pull through or die", as one put it. I could see an employee at one of these stores where animals don't get treated just killing off sick ones. Cooperate NEEDS to monitor for this kind of thing and fire people when necessary, by what I've heard. And for anyone who's not aware, all their animals except for their cats and dogs, which come from shelters, come from places like (possibly worse than) Marshall's. Reptiles, rodents, birds- just look up "Petco supplier abuse" videos and you'll never want to buy one there again.

    Hello, I worked at Marshalls for many years. Some of what you said is absolutely correct, some is exaggerated and some is just factually incorrect. Some random thoughts:
    I believe Marshall's is the largest producer of ferrets in the world, not just usa. I think we were selling around 150k a year.
    Gilman started out breeding ferrets for hunting rabbits as they would "ferret" them out of their holes then he started selling the surplus. He and his wife Ina were very nice people and treated their employees very well. Due to the high taxes, there are very few jobs in rural NY so many people worked here out of necessity. Gilman took good care of his employees and made millionaires via a generous retirement. Wayne country employment options are basically Marshall Farms, the school or an apple farm (we are one of the countries largest supplier of apples)
    We didn't really do much research at the facility, we mostly sold the animals to labs that did. Many of our clients were colleges, so thats where some of your tuition is going.
    We had lots of vets from around there world, many from Cornell, working on the genetics. They are much better than you'd find from a mom and pop breeder, this is a smear campaign as is much of the content referenced in the bio. When the animal liberation front started breaking in in the early 2000s they took pictures of ferret cages crusted with feces. This was just wet food which is blended on prem and dispensed to the cages.
    The mice and flies were a constant battle. You need proper ventilation for the buildings to prevent ammonia buildup, but this would invite these pests. We kept alternating mice poisons which would kill the majority of the mice, but then a few immune ones would make immune babies. I think we ran out of new poisons to try and that marshall mice are the most immune in the world. Same with flies, we had industrial bug zappers, but when there is that much food around it was impossible to totally eliminate them.
    Occasionally a ferret or dog would get loose, but this was fairly rare, and it wasn't like there were multiple animals loose all the time. Usually someone didn't shut a cage correctly after animal socialization.
    The vets had zero patience for mistreatment of animals. Any rough handling reported would be addressed quickly (unless you were related to certain higher ups, at which point you'd just keep getting different managerial jobs)
    Marshalls was on good relations with the local municipals. They donated lots of money to build parks and hospital wings. The police did keep an eye around the area. I will say, the State Police that arrested the Shark guys flying the drone 100% broke the law and violated the 4th amendment rights of the drone operators. There are many good cops in the area, but those smug buttheads should have been sent back to the academy and NY should have paid a hefty fine.
    Marshalls and animal testing in general is a complex issue. If you want it to go away, you have 2 options. Refuse medical treatment that was tested on animals, like children cancer treatments, or come up with a way to prove treatments are safe in a way that doesn't use animals.

      @MisterBookman Před 2 měsíci

      Also, I don't think they do cats anymore because they were too susceptible to disease. When we used to do them, if one got sick, you could lose a whole barn. Maybe that has changed now. Dunno

    I got my ferret Ozzie from Petco. I was aware of the risk of having a store bought ferret but I felt for him and wanted to take him home. But during me meeting him I questioned about his diet and origin. Petco employee claimed that marshal farms stopped inbreeding sense 2020 and he only can eat the marshals crunchy food not raw diet, also claimed he was 3 months old or older when he got his vaccines, was neutered, and descented. He died a year later from Insulinoma cancer and turned out he was 1 to 2 months old and 3 days when he got his procedures done and by the time I had him for months, I found that marshals never stopped inbreeding and I was lied to about raw diet not being better then marshals crunchy food. These companies are just cruel.

  • @hudsonhighlands8610
    @hudsonhighlands8610 Před rokem

    Great video!
    Ferrets that aren’t sold are sent back to Marshals Farms and they are euthanized there. It’s not in their interest to keep a ferret that can’t breed.
    I know this from rescues. They are constantly trying to pay ‘ransom’ so the animals do not get sent back. Also the way they are kept in stores is unsafe.
    The people working in the pet stores are much kinder than Marshals farms is. But they are a business and need not to loose money. Anyhow we’ve had endless fundraisers so save a sick ferret at a pet store. It’s a balance to try to save the ferret and not promote the selling of ferrets by Marshals. Rescues try to negotiate a reduced price. They are doing their best. Many are saving lab ferrets now.
    I love the rescues, I am disturbed by the cruelty of mill breeding of animals. When I was a child their were mills breeding cats and dogs and you’d find them at pet stores for sale. Just like that stopped over time I believe one day there will be no live animals sold in pet stores. Instead we will see the reaching out to rescues for bringing animals for adoption at pet stores.
    And for pets like ferrets we’ll see a rise in private breeders as they exist in the UK and other places. There are a couple in the US too. But they aren’t active right now.
    A healthy ferret lives longer is more ferrety is that makes sense? And you don’t have to live in dread of adrenal disease, lymphoma, and insulinoma, etc which Marshall’s hasn’t bred out of the ferrets they sell. I have purchased products but never a ferret from Marshall’s. I rehomed and rescued because while I didn’t have the info what I saw as a child made me aware what having cute babies year round likely means, though I was hoping I was wrong.
    If anyone wants to look into it their used to be another ferret breeder: triple K. They were pretty much shut down because advocates infiltrated and videotaped the cruelty that was going on. That led to Marshals adding layers of security to protect AGAINST animal advocacy.
    It’s all so sad.
    You can help by contacting rescues for information you can give to pet stores about the correct way to house ferrets. (No care fresh bedding for many reasons). They should have hammocks and low dust litter. At home use bowls instead of water bottles. Ferrets aren’t meant to drink from them unless they are being transported. Fresh water be creative about messes with food or water - put in a heavy bowl and put that bowl in a pyrex or other heavy pan, if you have water digging or playing ferrets.
    Fabric bedding/towels/baby blankets are best and a low step in litter box. They need 3+ hours out of cage time. For mental health and enrichment. Joint ferret groups on social media for ideas and advice.
    Learning and spreading the word like this video does lead to change. 🙂♥️

I support my local pet store, I PURCHASED one from my local pet store, but took IN as rescues TWO from my pet store because they couldn’t place them and knew I often take in rescues depending on the circumstances. You said at the end that your ferrets ARE Marshall ferrets. Why didn’t YOU buy them from a breeder? The fact is that there are VERY FEW IF ANY ferret breeders in MOST places (there are a few here and there) and sadly for those who are unfortunate to live in a place that DOES NOT have a breeder, the ONLY option is TO BUY a Marshall ferret because as you stated that’s where they will come from. Are you implying that if you don’t have a breeder in your area you shouldn’t be a ferret owner?

    l rescued at Marshalls ferret from Petco. At that point l had 4 ferrets and wasn't looking for another, but every time l went into the store to buy food, there was this single ferret. l was told it had been there for 10 months and it hadn't sold because of biting. There were going to ship it back. In my mind, that was a death sentence. The only use for a spayed ferret would be to sell it to a lab for coronavirus lab testing. I bought her and it's taken over 2 1/2 months to get the biting down. She will now nip occasionally but no more latching on and ripping flesh. Now, l can't take credit for the change......that belongs to my other 4 ferrets who she lives with. The new one started learning from her atrium-mates. They are not caged. They live in a large atrium with lots of room to run and play. They can be together or get away from each other. She was so lonely......she spent the first month sleeping in the center of the ferret pile. But she learned from watching her companions deal with me and then she got introduced to my dogs and cat and interestingly enough....she's never bitten any of them. I can now hold Valentine (that was when she was supposed to be shipped back) and pet and play with her with only an occasional nip.

    I did not know any of this I should have done my research the minute I decided on getting a ferret I only learned basic stuff about him and I assumed the food and all the ferret products at petco were safe because I didn’t think they would be sold if it was dangerous for a ferret. I also didn’t know I was supporting a cruel and horrible mill by buying all that from petco. But anyways can the ferret food from Marshall’s really kill a ferret if that’s the only food they ate everyday? My baby boy Remy who was almost 2 years old died a few days ago because of the Urinary Tract Stones disease. I bought him at Pet smart back in 2019 and I have been feeding him the Marshall ferret food ever since I got him. My vet tried to save him by removing as many stones last Friday when I took him for emergency care because he started to act not himself and I could tell he was in pain and something was wrong but he had too many Stones and he died halfway through surgery which broke my heart and I’m so angry and upset about him dying at a young age because I loved him so much he was my son. Well I believe it’s Marshall’s fault and my fault for not doing research from the beginning and protecting him from these types of illnesses. My vet said it may and may not have been a reason but the ferret food from Marshall are not as healthy and safe as you would think it is for your ferret. Also I learned that ferrets hide their symptoms very well and once they show it it means it might be too late for them.

    I just recently bought a 10 week old ferret from my local PetCo store and the seller said he was born at a Marshall’s Ferrer Farm facility. Is it normal for Marshall ferrets to be so tiny? Most ferrets at 10 weeks are not as small as mine is
