For some reason I got really emotional about this episode because us as black people have been through and still going through a lot !!!! Thank you Mona you are a gem !!!
It’s should NOT surprise me that on the other side of the world 🌎 in Australia 🖤💛❤️our struggle is actually so similar!! Peace ☮️ and Love ❤️ to Mona⁉️Phelps⁉️ and the whole DCMWG crew!!
I worked at a job for 12 years only to find out year 10 (Covid year) that the young lady (white woman) I trained with no experience, was making more money than me. I went to my employer and let him know it was some bullshit, they act like they didn’t realize and back paid me a raise. I had already started looking for a new job immediately but then Covid came around. So I held out a little longer, but the following year I was given an opportunity and I jumped at it! Best decision I ever made.. Anyway my previous employer had the nerve to act like he didn’t understand why I was leaving.
Mona I work at a medical office at the front desk and babyyyy I puts my headphones in and tear this podcast up faithfully. I love you so much and I'm so proud of you girl. And I love that you are an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. We love you girl keep going up! #1 podcast in the WORLD
I loved everything you said about the black skin experience. When explaining it to a white former classmate a few years ago I said “people think it’s people calling you nigger to your nose that’s hard but it’s the “smaller” everyday shit that no one bats an eyelash about that we have to think about CONSTANTLY that’s draining as fuck.” I then gave examples about shopping, work, house buying, etc. and he was in shock.
Girl, thank you for bringing this up!!! I am a Broker-Salesperson (real estate) in NV, and we still have classes on redlining to this day... I was shocked/not shocked when I became an agent and learned how hardcore redlining was across america. I couldn't believe we had to have a class to teach that redlining is illegal... like are you serious? People dont know not to be fu*ked up? It was 2019 and they still had examples of how it STILL happens today! I promise you the sh*t is real today sis! I tell everyone and try to educate everyone on MAKE SURE YOUR AGENT IS ON YOUR SIDE! Make sure you know your RE Agent for thr biggest purchase of your life!!!!!!! Thank you again for bringing this up! People need to know ❤❤❤❤ Love you Mona! ❤❤❤❤
I'm remote now but the microaggressions usually always start with the touching of the hair or wearing head wraps and someone telling me that others were "concerned" about my spiritual practices (basically they thought I was a witch because I covered my hair). If your hair is too short, they ask if you like girls. If it's too long and natural, it's too big. If you're slim, they call you skinny and say you need to eat. If you're thick, they ask you if you want to walk with them during the lunch break. Glad I'm not in office anymore!
I wanna chime in for the nonprofit girlies who deal with this mess..we deal with the bullies that wear masks like they help the world but are horrible to employees..i have left several toxic jobs and had no regrets my peace is worth more
On the last day of BLACK HISTORY month 2018 I put a coworker in her place with the spirit of 100 years of ancestors!!! I let her comment on my head wraps saying oh “ I bet your head is warm “ fly but she crossed the line when she said something to an older lady that wore a lot of wigs. She pulled me to the said telling me how it made her feel bad, that co woker wore wigs to hide hair loss. Later that day I went into her office and closed her door and told her why you see black women wear head wraps, and wigs, and weaves. It isn’t always for fashion some ppl have hair damage/loss and wear them for various reasons so your comments are inappropriate because you don’t know if it’s fashion, homage/religion/heritage, hair loss or illness. She was apologizing and correcting herself like they do but it felt good to check her.
I am a only child too Mona and we love our friends so differently I don’t think people understand unless they don’t have siblings they were raised with
This is hands down one of my favorite episodes! The micro aggressions in corporate America are real and I wish more people talked about this. Thanks for a great pod!!❤
Smush learning early I love that for him. I didn't know until I was 21 taking my first road trip to to the south that you gotta pay tolls, I was PISSED
I went to a predominantly white school graduated HS in 2010 and went through the struggle of people touching my hair like it was a science experiment ALL the time. I also remember getting on the school bus and being called a “Brownie” and to go to the back of the bus where I belong. Long story short my bus driver turned the camera off one day and lil Logan got his nose and glasses broken! Brownie wasn’t having it anymore 😂
I do intermittent fasting too. I don’t eat after 2pm except Sundays a cheat day. I lost 40 pounds and got back to my high school weight and I don’t even have to eat healthy 😂 it’s the only thing that worked for me
@@rebelhillproductions I mean you can do different times but for me I wake up like 7 and then I stop at 2PM. And I’m not eating the entire time either like I don’t need to wake up and eat right away so it’s really like one big meal and that’s it.
Might I add🤨 I’m starting to see that USSSSSSSS AS THE BLACK WOMAN intimidated other race women. Even if your not that educated the way you carry yourself with grace and beauty and knowledge kills them Corporate America 🤦🏾♀️
Yassssss What's up Mona & Phelps and the squad I be sooooo happy to get the uploads to carry me over to clock out time. Yasssssss. Love youuuu Mona ❤❤❤❤
Micro-aggression conversation and corporate world was well received and needed because we as black people always have to two times as hard to receive the same of recognition.

YOU AINT SAY ONE LIE!! I watched that damn Kirk Franklin documentary and was IN TEARS!! I did not expect that and NO, me and my dad are not on terms!! People are mad because he used it to the release of his album but it’s not a secret that Kirk was adopted. It’s his story and his music is clearly an expression of that!!
Mona when you were talking about red lining and destroying areas for gentrification purposes it reminded me of the stories of how they say that the broke the levees purposely in New Orleans to save the French Quarter but the 9th ward was sacrificed.
This is so funny because I am listening to this episode in the office with my headphones SUPER low because I know how you are 😭 but I love it. Love youuuu Mona 💗
I worked in a hospital and I would wear a scarf while working housekeeping. I just felt like it was sanitary and it kept my hair from sweating out. ALL the white people would ask why I’m wearing a scarf (at the same time they have on scrub caps), or make jokes about the way I styled my scarf. They knew why I had a scarf on, because it was the same reason they have on scrub caps. When I Transferred from housekeeping to the lab(phlebotomist), I started wearing fashionable hairnets to hold my hair back while I drew blood. The comments changed from my scarf to my Nets. It didn’t bother me when they joked that I matched my nets to my scrubs(cause I’m a bad bitch and I wanna look good in my new position). It bothered me that it was: why I have a Net? Why do I change my styles so much? Why don’t I wear a hair tie like everyone else? Cause I’m grown bitch, mind your business 🙄
I loved this episode. Corporate America is not for the weak. Honey the stories I could tell you. I miss Tony had me in tears. Thanks for making my morning Mona.
Mona, I can relate so much that's how we grew up knowing Our past (I do think it's bc my Dad is light so he over compensated, which I thankful he did) Back & forth from Northern Va to Philly crazy culture shock at times.
It’s so crazy you’re talking about this, bc I had a moment this morning getting ready for work. I’ve recently realized I have to disengage, period with my white coworkers. Everything I tell them, they go behind my back and tell someone else, bc they want me fired. I don’t even tell them anything important. But, the thing is, my boss loves me & they know he was gonna fire them & keep me, so now their behavior has become worse. I’m currently in my office with the door closed, bc I don’t want them to even think I want to talk.
This really is the downfall of working in higher positions. I’m only 29(male) but have worked in health insurance, with mainly women(caucasian). I’ve experienced a little bit but I can’t believe the more you move up the worse it can get. My goal is a 6 figure income.
Amazing episode as always! And it’s right on time, as I’ve been so exhausted trying to work a corporate job. People always say “bring your whole self to work” but that’s honestly not possible for a lot of black people in the corporate world. Even if you don’t experience direct racism, there are micro-aggressions, there are people who assume you don’t know how to do your job, and there’s the heavy isolating feeling of being the “only”. Not fun.
