  • Factory tour of the Bernina Sewing Machine Factory in Switzerland. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Bernina headquarters in Switzerland and Bernina allowed me to film areas of the factory that they still use to manufacture some of their machines.
This is a different kind of video for my channel, but I was fascinated by the tour and wanted to be able to share it with other passionate sewists. I would love to know what you think about this style of video.
Part 2: Interview with Owner - • Bernina Sewing Machine...
Please note I was not paid by Bernina to make or create this video. I do not work for the brand or receive any monetary assistance from them.

I purchased my only Bernina 830 record electronic 40 years ago. I'll never forget when I picked it up, the dealer told me it would never need to be serviced and I would hand to down to my grandchildren. That person was so right - I've maintained the machine myself and will be teaching my grandchildren how to sew on it. I love my machine, it has been a workhorse without issues which made me a loyal fan of Bernina. Only recently have considered upgrading to a newer model and I will consider nothing but a Bernina. Thank you for the factory tour, love seeing how things are made, and all your videos!

Owning a new Bernina sewing machine is my dream. I acquired an old Bernina 530-2 Record about 18 months ago. It will probably be the only one I will ever be able to afford. I just love the quality of the machine and the presser feet that came with it. She's a dream to sew with. I'm glad Bernina still hold quality as a priority. @@finestracheride an update: I bought a 475QE today. I went to my dealer who gave me a thorough demonstration and then I trialled it. I originally thought I would buy the 590. I found the straight stitch appearance was better on the 475. I will use the machine for dressmaking, not quilting so I don’t need the 9mm stitch width.
I haven’t set it up yet. I am going back tomorrow to the dealer for a complete run through on the 475. I am very excited and glad the decision is finally made. My dealer gave me a complimentary number 10 foot as I told her I do a lot of top stitching. I love the function where you can measure the button size for buttonholes using the screen.

In terms of the machines still made in Switzerland I think it’s the top of the line machines so the Q series (that you see in the video) and the 8 series. Form the interview I understood that it was only the machines that they could afford to; the higher price point machines. And I guess any testing on new machines.

It is such a shame that many of the Bernina sewing machines are now manufactured in Asia, it is only the high end models that are manufactured in Switzerland. I love my Swiss made Bernina Virtuosa 160

Its too bad that people have preconceptions about the Bernina Thailand plant. A B770 would run circles around your 160. Ive seen the 7 series with 70 million stitches on it and still runs like new.

@@MrFloydroy People will always be ignorant. It's not the nationality of the people in a factory or where the factory is located, it's the COMPANY RUNNING THE FACTORY that determines whether the product is quality or not. It would be nice if all European brands were still manufactured in Europe, but they aren't because Europe has the same problem as the US: the consumer wants something for nothing and is not willing to pay a little more to keep manufacturing jobs in their country. The jobs get sent overseas and the consumer spends the rest of their life complaining that nothing is made in their country anymore when the consumer unwilling to pay a slightly higher price that keeps their economy running and their fellow Americans employed is a major part of the problem.

I would like to see their Thailand factory to see if it is similar to the Swiss set up. I am thinking of buying a 570qe but I won’t buy it if made in Thailand. I bought a Husqvarna Opal 7 years ago after having years of service from my Designer1 made in Sweden. I found out, post purchase, the Opal was made in China. It is a good working machine but won’t sew many layers at once. I am thinking of trading it for the Bernina but I don’t want the same disappointment.

      Hi Alexa,
I am pretty certain the 570QE is made in Thailand. I think it is only the top of the line machines made in Switerland now (Q Series and 8 Series). I talk about this with the owner in the Interview (coming on Sunday). However from what I know I believe the Thailand factory is owned by Bernina so they only produce Bernina machines and is run similarly to this factory in Switerland with training etc. coming from Switerland.
I currently own the B790 and I am pretty certain that this was made in Thailand.
I also have a 570QE that is coming to me. One of my really good customers sadly passed away and left me her 570QE, I just need to arrange it’s shipment from the UK. I am planning on having it as my machine at home, as I have my 790 at the office, so I will let you know how I go with it.

I really like my Bernina, but I wish they would have made it easier to differentiate between the models. They produce such expensive and high quality machines, but then they can't even manage a proper naming for their models. I mean, you have an old and a new 5 series. It's sooo confusing. Also when buying accessories, it's really confusing. The feet can also not be clearly distinguished by numbers. Some feet have the same numbers but are fintended or different machines. But apart from that Bernina is pretty nice. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into their production!

Hey guys, which Bernina do you like and why? I want to purchase a sewing machine that will last a lifetime. Some details: I'm a beginner, I don't want to make many garments (aside from a cute dress for my daughter), I want to make gifts for people, I want to to make a few wall hanging Quilts and a quilt for family members. I won't be selling items. I DONT care for extra stitches, embroidery stitches, extras. I just want a simple straight stitch, a heavy workhorse. And I think mechanical is better than computerized
So which Bernina should I buy?

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  Před 3 lety +1

Hello, I am not sure how many machines they have that aren't computerised these days. I know the 1008 used to be what schools had in the UK (www.bernina.com/en-AU/Machines-AU/Series-Overview/BERNINA-Classic-Series/BERNINA-1008) but it says it is discontinued on the Australian Bernina website? I know my dealer in the UK used to service them for the schools and he said they would come back in an interesting state (one example was a knitting needle pushed in the top of the where the lever is) and they always worked perfectly. I have customers that had this machine for YEARS like decades (not sure how long it's been around but it's a hard worker).
Otherwise I would probably look at the 3 Series, they are the entry Bernina models. I own the Bernina 350 which has now been discontinued but I think the 325 would be similar. It is still computerised but it is a basic computer, compared to my much more expensive 790 (which I have to do embroidery). The computerisation is only for choosing the stitch etc. They don't have tons of stitches but I find that they still sew really nicely. They are still very heavy and solid compared to other machines, which to me shows they are quality.
Does that help? Any questions let me know.

Hello, I first bought a Bernina 325 because I thought I wouldn’t need all those stitches and functions from the other models. I adore this Bernina model and it sews marvelously well, but the arm length is not very large, so If you plan to quilt a lot, I would consider buying a machine from the 4 Series.
I later bought the 590 model to use mainly as an embroidery machine and I kept the 325 as well because it helps me with all the basic sewing.
For big quilts though, I need to use the 590. Plus, the free hand system, and the thread cutting options are very helpful as well.
I would advise you to buy the best model you can afford. I’ve never regretted buying my 590. I’ve had it for a year now, I've sewn 2 million stitches and it still surprises me how well and precise it sews.
