Apparently it used to be thought that the really big manta rays were dangerous and could sink large boats, until like the 1970s where people went diving with them and discovered that rays are actually pretty chill animals.
Actually, In some parts of Irish folklore legends, these mobula rays were sought as the children of mermaids, mermaidens and merrow-maidens. It would have been that these were newly hatched devilfishes jumping around in joy, were the juvenile form of merrows before they grow...
Notice how they don't simply jump, they slap the water at just the right moment, or at least make sure their bodies are absolutely flat on the point of impact. The fact that the females simply do it for fun and sommersault is just amazing. We were all put here to be free and enjoy this planet.
How have I never seen this before!? Seriously, I love nature shows and I've have watched hundreds and hundreds of shows over my life yet somehow I have never seen a program that showed these magnificent creatures "hangin ten" as it were. LOL I've seen lot of critters breaching the water but man oh man these guys take it to the next level I tell you what, that awesome :)
Exactly my thoughts! My favorite books at age 2 were the Book of Fishes and the Book of Reptiles and Amphibians. I had all of the animals memorized, knew where they lived and they never gave me nightmares. Some of my favorites were the Gila monster, Giant Clam pictured with a scuba diver trapped in it, venomous snakes and the shark said best in my Boston accent- Ham-a- head! I was a riot, and I brought my daughter up the same way, marvelled at the animals we'd never heard of in new nature programs, and how those shows make us kids again. ALWAYS new creatures to discover and thrill us! We almost had strokes when the iguanas raced to get away from the snakes chasing them relentlessly in one Planet Earth episode. We called it like the Kentucky Derby, screaming our heads off!
Nature person: as you see these manatees are trying to earn a mate Me: As you can see These Majestic Sea Flap Flaps are trying to achieve the goal and evolve into a flying Majestic Sea Flap Flaps
Today I saw a Manta Ray jump out of the ocean about 50 yards from the shore line. I see dolphins all the time at the beach in South Carolina, but seeing a 10 ft wide ray fly out of the water was mesmerizing. My German Shepherd who is obsessed with the ocean came out of the water right before it jumped. He must of sensed them when he went to retrieve his toy. Really cool stuff
I will never forget the first time I saw this down in Cabo. When we were flying down the cost there were these MASSIVE, undulating, dark areas, off of the shore. Every once in awhile you would see a splash. Later that evening I was sitting by the pool and started to see things jumping and splashing. I grabbed my camera and zoomed in as close as I could get it. These were the guys I say. Throughout that week everyone at the pool was amazed how close they would come to shore and the show that we would get. They are in Cabo April and May.
MAGIC. ABSOLUTELY MAGIC MAGNIFICENT MANTA RAYS!! I have neverrrrrrr seen this nor did I know they coudl LITERALLY FLY and feel like I've seen MAGIC from another world!! Because I HAVE!!!
A good example of' the right place at the right time'. Wonderful to watch Films such as this amaxing example always leave me with a sense of awe. - Great filming.
Dont know but the music in this video is somewhat similar to this piece “Mobula Rays” by Hans zimmer , Jacob Shea and David Flaming album : Blue planet 2 Hope it helps
It is my suspicion that the rays are jumping out the water like this to avoid sharks - you can see in the beginning of the video that something abruptly disturbed them. Jaw-dropping, totally amazing video!!!
What graceful pancake shorks. I saw a giant manta ray do this when I was kid at the beach, off in the distance but nobody else was paying attention. I had only seen pictures of small sting rays so I was like wuuuut the fuggin hell was that! Parents thought I was making up stories, I didn't go back in the water that day lol to me that was a sea monster.
Not sure...I was too busy watching flat sharks attempt to take to the skies. Where was this god you're speaking of? Was he in the video somewhere? Perhaps doing a little swimming?
I watch hours of nature footage on a weekly basis but this is the first time I've ever seen this and... I could have sworn it were BBC April Fool's CGI
"My name is Raymond J. Johnson Jr. Now you can call me Ray, or you can call me J, or you can call me Johnny, or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me Junie, or you can call me Junior; now you can call me Ray J, or you can call me RJ, or you can call me RJJ, or you can call me RJJ Jr." ultimately ending with, "but you doesn't hasta call me Johnson!"
Imagine what sailors of past centuries thought when seeing this spectacle.

Nature is truly astounding
Just incredible!
When that first ray jumped out of the water flapping it's "wings" like a bird... I don't think I have ever been at a loss of words like that.
Apparently this is ridiculously adorable. I love how they try to land on the water as hard as they can, this would be so me.
The guys are structured and in sync to make sure their fins make a boom....
The girls are just doing somersaults and having a jolly good time! 😂❤️
That moment when sea pancakes can jump higher then you...
That was my last sip of juice.... Damn you
Muahahahaha

well when you put it that way.
I love the way Mobula rays joyfully leap out of the water and appear as though they are flying.
You can actually see them flatten out their wings just in time for the impact. Pretty awesome.
They are pretty smart

Yes. Swimming in the air is flying.

Ah yes, when the sea pancakes are ready, you must flip them to make more. Makes sense.
Just amazing sea life. Every single day, there's always something powerfully magical to learn about the world.
Hope the diver is wearing his sunblock cause that's a lot of rays.
Stunning footage of these graceful Mobula Rays....
Класс!!!! Манты - птицы - акробаты!!!! Впервые слышу и вижу, чтобы манты выныривали из воды и таааак высоко, да ещё и сальто крутят !!!!! КРУТО

Male Mobula Ray: DO YOU LIKE MY SEXY FLIGHT, FEMALES?
The narrator has the best voice ever. The BBC surely is a treasure trove for narrators and documentaries.
He truly does! BBC has outstanding quality overall
That's Paul McGann, there. Love him in the Doctor Who audio dramas!
Go drunk rays, you are fish, not birds

Выпрыгивающие из воды скаты - это что-то новенькое! (О_О)
но зачем они это делают?!?
The sting ray with a dream to fly may it come true
These dont have barbs like Mantas i belive
These are mantas. They don't have barbs. Sting rays are bottom feeders, mantas are far more advanced than sting rays
It always amazes me how animals seek attention from each other. It's like hey look at me Brenda
Красота изумительная!!! Благодарю! 😊💟💞

Wow, acrobatic rays. I'm officially jealous of the people who've filmed it.
Они наверное, хотят летать, как птицы!
Give them another million years and we'll have flying rays in our skies.
Так вот как происходила эволюция! И как появились первые птицы!
