  • The Bigscreen Beyond is the smallest VR headset of the world! But not only that, it also sports super-high resolution MicoOLED panels and pancake lenses. And each headset is actually custom made to perfectly fit each single customer. But how good is the headset actually? Are the $999 worth it? I had the chance to check out the prototype (!) and next to my unboxing you will see my first impressions of the headset including pros and cons that I discovered!

I would love to upgrade now from my G2 but even comfort aside, I can't drop to a smaller FOV. I was on the fence on buying it before watching your video, but now after watching the video, you made it clear the smaller FOV is actually noticeable. I really hope BigScreen will make a Gen 2 with a bigger FOV... even if it cost more, I would buy it!

@@covertpuppytwo3857 Consider that Thrillseeker and SadleyitsBradley, who after using Beyond for many weeks, declared it's the most immersive headset and they are replacing their index with it - this is also after trying Pimax Crystal.
It seems to me, that, the benefits of Beyond are really going to become apparent after longer usage, after having many long sessions with it.
A very first impression with an hour or so, even a day, I doubt is going to highlight just why this headset works so well.
      That's the impression I'm getting.
I'm hoping Seb uses his Beyond frequently and for long sessions over the coming weeks to get a real feel for it. Obviously enjoyed so much about the headset, but the fov and glare was a notable issue in this short first impressions. I wonder if that concern stays after many longer sessions with it.
His time will definitely be split between Beyond and Crystal. Hopefully Seb uses both a lot to get a good comparison!

@@zackmac5917 I have the Pimax 5K+ ... I got tired of the hassle of using the Pimax and got the G2... I was willing to downgrade the FOV for the G2 for an upgrade in picture quality and ease of use. But I don't think I'm willing to downgrade the FOV yet again. I watched I believe the first video Thrillseeker had of the Beyond and he was really vague about what the actual FOV of the Beyond was as stated... said something about the CEO saying not wanted to "oversell"... I was really hoping that would be the case, but Seb made it very clear... a noticeable downgrade. I love the idea of this Beyond headset... the size, weight, comfort, the use of 3rd party controllers... even the custom facial fit. But I simply can't downgrade even more on the FOV without being unhappy about it. My G2 is still a good HMD... I think I'll just have to continue waiting. Like I said earlier... hopefully Beyond does really well and will make a Gen 2 because we know there will be no G3! If I didn't have the G2 or if this was my first HMD... I would buy the Beyond.

@@covertpuppytwo3857 Yeah its totally a fair point, especially if you already dropped FoV for similar reasons.
I think the magic in this headset, from the impressions so far, is that the combination of zero light leakage, perfect fit, comfort, high resolution, micro-OLED, creates such a comfortable and life-like experience that negates the issue of FoV.
But the jury is still out on that for most people. We only have impressions from a hand-full of people with good extensive use.
Regardless, I am definitely excited for the 12K. The 12K may be a perfect complementary headset to Beyond - if you can afford both which for most people is a definite no lol.
One of the biggest questions right now is, what's Apple's headset like?
      Is it Steamvr compatible?
It'll be perhaps up to or more than 2x the price of Beyond. And probably a bit bigger in size and weight. But it might provide 4k x 4k per eye micro-OLED at a wider FoV, in a still small form factor of something like 300g, + a ton of extras like eye tracking, face tracking, and high quality mixed reality. It could be the one headset to rule them all.
But with no steamvr compatibility I wouldn't touch it.

Coming from the valve index the beyond feels like a no-brainer upgrade, especially with the fact that I already have the controller in lighthouse ecosystem setup. Other reviewers who've tried it compare the glare to the index, and say that the glare is a little bit better on the beyond than the index but relatively the same, the low FOV is a downgrade, but one of my biggest issues with gaming in VR right now is I can play for a good two or three hours before the headset becomes uncomfortable, but this one it seems like my sessions in VR will start becoming a bit more comparable to my sessions flat screen, I'm only ever really able to game on the weekends and when I do, I go hard lol.
The question here though I think is whether the beyond is a good investment for people who are not already in the steam VR ecosystem, and don't have the lighthouses and controllers etc, a 1000 dollar headset is a bit of a pill to swallow as an upgrade to an existing setup, but I don't know if I could even remotely recommend this to people who also have to buy controllers and base stations considering that we'll easily push the price of an entire setup to 1500+

I wonder what the VR landscape will be like in October when this is released. This headset is very exciting. It's a really nice design if you ask me. You could find some things not so great with the Beyond - but their idea of a custom face mask is a very good idea. I love the fact you saw no light in it. Amazing. After going back to Mixed Reality Windows headsets I've realised the weight is almost the most important factor for me in a VR headset. Having said that I don't want to mess around with basestations. It's also a shame this didn't use just USB C cable. They need to get this out the door quickly before The Quest 3 comes out! The DPVR E4 is half the price of this and double the weight. I wonder which tradeoffs people are willing to make. Do people want to watch a movie with a headset tethered to their pcs? We shall see. Good luck Bigscreen - it is an innovative product pushing VR forward.

If they find ways to increase the fov and offer better lenses, they have a killer headset brewing. :D Sure, it's an enthusiast product but I really like the niche of having something tailor made for you. No need to fiddle with IPD adjustment, no re-adjusting straps etc... It's "your headset", light weight and fits YOU like a glove. However, when it costs 999USD+ (with audio strap, base stations, controllers etc) it better be perfect, and to be honest its shortcoming right now is low FOV and edge blurring. And for me that's hard to justify for the price.

The FOV is a bummer and it’s tempting to want to wait for a gen 2 headset, but i also understand how challenging it is and capital intensive it is for a software startup like big screen to raise enough money to have a hardware device.
I suspect if sales aren’t amazing, then it will be impossible to justify continuing development on the headset. So I’m concerned about a) how long will support continue for this headset if they don’t make another device and 2) will they be super behind on their delivery dates since they are a software company pivoting to hardware + software?

  • @Flutters_Shygal
    @Flutters_Shygal Před rokem +4

The things that bother me personally are no adjustable IPD, small FOV and the fact that you need an iPhone to be able to even order one (for the face scan).
For the adjustable IPD, this is because people cannot just "try" VR without a friend having them try on their headset, and buying a full headset only to find out you can't even handle it is a terrible feeling.
The smaller FOV could make stuff feel more restrictive.
The biggest gripe I have though is the requirement for a very recent iPhone. This means that you already need a 1000$+ device just to be able to order this 1000$+ device, which then hangs onto a pretty beefy computer to run all those pixels, meaning another 2000$+ device. This makes the arguably most ergonomic VR experience something extremely exclusive.
A small thing I got with it too is that they only provide you with one face gasket. If they got you two, you could easily clean out one while still using the headset, but this is not a big issue.
Finally, and this is not something that's exclusive to the Bigscreen Beyond, but I personally do not like it that VR headsets can only be bought separately, that you are expected to either already have the rest set up, or buy it from somewhere else. I don't mind that you can buy packages of just the headset, as long as there's also a package that has everything included to get you started (minus the PC)

I think the things that still kill this headset in general are the extremely high price for just a headset, and still requires lighthouse. The low FOV is a deal breaker for gaming, it is fine for movies, which honestly is where bigscreen should be focusing with this design (but not for $1000). Still requires an iphone to order the facial interface, until they get a working solution to make it available to everyone it limits who they can sell it to. The final nail we have not seen yet, but I am fairly certain we will see, is they are not going to be able to print the facial interfaces at any kind of scale. If they get popular I am fairly certain they will not be able to fulfill orders quickly. Between the facial interface and needing to match the IPD per user, that adds complexity, cost, and time.

So I decided to wait.. and oh boy how glad I was that I didn't rush to buy one of the them. Valve released the almighty all perfect Index which really paid off up and even 4 years on and still one of the best all in all VR.
Although there are even more options than before today but as you said, there is always some disadvantage(s).. However, there is still hope...Valve is cooking something and it gotta be good. It is worth the wait...if not Valve's , then HTC Vive 3 might be the second hope.

Beyond sound like a dream. I still use my index despite weight & low res for racing & games & pico4 over VD for monitor replacement due to weight & res, Index glare doesnt cause any issues for me so beyond with its 127g, native steamvr & high res if it will work as solid as index will be a very good upgrade. It's cool that they custom build interfaces but doing that coupled with over a dozen different SKUs due to non-adjustable IPD is going to make it very difficult to scale. If they wind up pulling it off and get insanely popular, I would anticipate fulfillment lead times to balloon. Maybe they do the IPD setup during packaging along with the custom interface and it's a non-issue, though.

I love some of the new developments but I'm a bit confused as to where the industry is going.
Big Screen, known for movies, releases a headset that only works tethered to a PC and in range of your base stations.
So you can't watch films in bed, living room, comfortable areas etc.
Being tethered is also a big counter to its comfort for stand up vr gaming.
The small fov will also deter many simmers.
Pimax releases a headset that could be great for seated simmers but, as well as being really heavy, requires batteries.
Myself, and plenty of other simmers, often have races, or flights, over 3 hours so the prospect of a battery needing to be changed is a real concern. (Pit stop strategies now need to factor in real world battery swaps😃). I'm also a bit concerned about the long term battery life.
So sadly, I think I'll have to skip the visual boast on offer from this generation of headsets and stick with my G2 for simming and Quest2 for stand up gaming.
It doesn't help that either headset would cost me around £1,500 (by the time I've got the base stations and controllers for the Beyond).
That's a lot of money for a visual boost that introduces other significant disadvantages.😢

You probably already know, but in the last day or so the Quest 3 was announced - which is actually the reason I found my way here, because I was curious as to what other developments in VR were going on as the industry seems to have stagnated for a few years. I love the look of the Bigscreen, the size especially (I'm not really bothered by the FOV) - but I can't justify spending upwards of AUD $2000 for the device as I'll need to buy the base stations and controllers as well as the headset. So my upgrade will most likely be to the Quest 3, which fortunately seems like a pretty decent step up from the Q2
