    Been using this since release. I’ve played all vr games and the best ones are fallout 4 and Skyrim both AAA open world games that are life-changing. Wabbajack modpacks make these games from a 6 to a 10. Bhaptics x16 and arms to feel the recoil adds so much to immersion. Moreover, modding a game for VR is on another level.

    I've had absolutely no problems with my Pico 4, solid controller's no dead pixels and my tracking and audio has been spot on, also no light coming in from the sides, I bought my unit from Smyths here in the UK, I can say it is leaps and bounds better than my Meta Quest 2 that I no longer have, I'm glad I made the swap. Keep up the good work!

    Interested in your PCVR-experiences. I bought the Pico4 as it hit the market as a possible replacement for my Quest2 for single use simracing in Assetto Corsa. I tried the Pico4 a couple of times, had the warping effect and less performance compared to the Quest2. The dedicated Rift displaymode in AC might be part of that. In the end It sold the Pico4 and happily returned to the Quest2. I'm looking forward to the Quest3.

    Still incredibly happy with my Pico 4, with Virtual Desktop (particularly the latest beta) it's worlds better than the Quest 2 that I had for PCVR, it was like going to the optician and getting new glasses in terms of clarity. Tracking is much better in lower light, too, light isn't the best in my usual VR room and the Q2 would drop tracking quite often, but the Pico keeps on going. It now has the AMVR facial interface and knuckle straps, and the BoboVR P4 strap and it's super comfy for me, and I have a USB-C splitter so the Bobo second battery can charge it while I have my headphones plugged in. Only real criticism is the standalone side compared to the Q2, but that's something I don't really use often beyond a bit of web browsing and movie watching. I've been an Oculus fan since the original Rift, but now I'm far more interested in a Pico 5 than the Quest 3. Oh, and I still keep randomly taking screenshots when I don't mean to because of that extra button, haha.

    I bought the Pico 4 at launch and i am still very happy with it. Using the AMVR facial interface it's very comfortable for me and my eyes (with glasses) are very close to the lenses so i have the maximum FOV i can get. The firmware got better and some serious issues regarding world scaling are fixed for the most part. Although i have to admit, that i only use it for PCVR with Virtual Desktop for various reasons. I already had a big Quest library and don't want to buy those games again and my Quest 2 is set up to be as comfortable as possible, but still not feeling as light as the Pico 4 to be fair. Despite the slightly higher resolution of the Pico 4 i can see pixels, whereas on the Quest 2 i can't. And the Quest 2 colors have much better brightness and contrast. Nevertheless, for PCVR that does not really bother me after getting used to it.
    One major reason for me to stick with the Quest 2 for standalone until the Quest 3 launches are the firmware features, especially the different refresh modes from 60,72,80,90 to 120Hz and the much better recording options, which are pretty much unusable on the Pico 4. The Pico 4 only supports 72 and 90 Hz modes and some games don't even give you an option to switch between them. Meta's firmware got improved much more since it's launch with tons of new features and also performance improvements with another one coming up with version v55. Some games run much better on Quest 2, First Person Tennis being one of them. My whole standalone experience is smoother and feels more polished on the Quest 2.
    Nevertheless, for PCVR i definitely prefer the Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop (the Pico PC streaming software is still not really good). Unless the Quest 3 comes along, that's for sure.

      You can get prescription lenses from the likes of Honsvr for a reasonable cost. I'm VERY shortsighted and got some for my Meta Quest 2 and they're SO much better than trying to cram glasses into a headset. Mine cost about £100.00, which I knew isn't cheap, but it's a MASSIVE upgrade if you wear glasses.

    • @KarlGosling

      Meta is definitely the more matured offering, no way around that, but I also use the Pico for pretty much only PCVR and choose it over my Quest 2 for the lenses and balance.

    @RileyELFuk Před rokem +1

    I pre-ordered too and have had no issues, not even light leakage from the facial interface. I have tried out 2 alternatives, the GeekVR, which I find unusable and the AMVR, which is wonderful. While the Pico was a little clunky with its OS, at the time, I much prefer it to the Quest 2 (though the Q2 still has some more advanced features). With the standalone experience, side-by-side, the Pico is much better than the Quest, as is the PCVR, though getting things working can sometimes take a bit more work, to get the controls working. I still enjoy using the quest, but it does feel like I'm using older tech, even with the Q2 having some more advanced features, which is mostly due to the better visuals with the pancake lenses and it's much larger sweetspot. The other thing is that the Pico is far more responsive and isn't glitchy, while I'm often frustrated by the Quest's slow response, which I guess is due to the Pico having more RAM.
    Passthrough is great on Pico 4, I often play Puzzling Places, while watching TV on passthrough, which wouldn't work on Quest2, despite it also allowing passthrough. So, all in all, I'm happy with the Pico 4 and use it far more than the Q2.
    The Quest 3 though, is very interesting, with better display, colour passthrough and a depth sensor, so I expect that I'll get one.

The more I watch content on it however (believe it or not I’m yet to even play my first VR game lol) the more I notice what I do believe is referred to as ‘screen door effect’. I think this is the name of when you look closely at the screen you can see like clumps of packed pixels which make the image look somewhat unclear. I’ve been on the hunt recently to invest a bit more money into something a little bit more expensive. But the thing is every great headset I’m coming across needs a hefty gaming PC make the visuals much better. If anybody knew what a better VR headset for visuals would be that would be great. My Pico 4 has been amazing, currently 2 months old. I also had the wobbly home environment issues until I updated the firmware, after that it has been rock solid and butter smooth. My controllers were great out of the box, however both of them have developed creaks after about 20 hours of use. I do have some slight waves in the pancake lens but are hardly distracting, brightness between the screens is completely indiscernible if there even is a difference. Haven't had any audio issues. My biggest complaint is the battery life and longevity. For future models I would like a larger battery and a replaceable one at that. That being said I believe that the Pico headsets were released well before they were ready and if I had purchased one earlier I certainly wouldn't have been as happy as I am now. Because of this I believe many people have a poor opinion of the headset, I have even heard several people call the Pico 4 complete trash and to not even consider buying it which is disappointing as it truly is an amazing product.

    I bought my Pico4 in Malaysia (I live in Thailand) and never had any issues with it. I like using it for PCVR and for watching movies. I tried to play Beatsaber (Steam) with the Pico4 but I must say that I don't like it. The controllers somehow make the swords useless. The Quest2 controllers (with the AMVR cover) are a lot better. But other than that I have no issues with the Pico4 controllers.
    To play PCVR I use Virtual Desktop. I play a few stand alone games on the Pico4, but they are not really my kind of game. I prefer Skyrim VR, Asgard's Wrath and all of the Half Life games... I like both headsets and wouldn't know what to recommend should somebody ask. I think the Quest is more mature and if you only play standalone games, go for the Quest2. Other than that, the Pico4 is an outstanding choice. But like you mentioned.... if your budget allows it, the Quest3 is a very good option...

  • @TigerDave
    @TigerDave Před rokem +2

    Funny how Karl posted this literally a few hours after I returned my Pico 4.
    I received mine last week and this was my very first foray into VR. After several days of testing, I ended up returning it for the following reasons:
    1) Wavy/warping/distorted and hazy lens (manuf. date was "10 2022" which is allegedly a bad batch).
    2) Very grainy and washed out picture -- especially in ACC, AC, Dirt Rally 2.0 and F1 2022 -- even when I set the resolution to 150% in Steam VR (3840x3840).
    3) The only title I enjoyed was Valve's "The Lab" but even so, it was quite washed out in appearance and lacked color and contrast when using Steam VR + Virtual Desktop.
    4) Even with the high-res screens, the screendoor effect was too noticeable for me as I could easily see all the pixels which ruined immersion for me.
    5) The face cushion and rear head pad were VERY uncomfortable and the battery life was pretty short, so I had to spend another $35 USD for the AMVR cushion and $80 USD for the BOBOVR rear cushion + batteries which helped, but it wasn't enough to justify the bad PQ.
    6) Even though the 3D effect was cool in racing games, I became motion sick immediately because my eyes told my brain that I was moving, but my body said I wasn't. I guess I can only play titles where the player is standing still.
    7) Getting a solid 866mbps wireless connection with Virtual Desktop + Steam VR required running ethernet from my PC to a dedicated AC or AX wifi router (yet another purchase). Doing this would remove my solid 500mbps wired connection to the internet.
    8) FOV was not enough for me as I felt like I was viewing everything through binoculars.
    9) Running PCVR sim racing games was a pain in the ass. I would have to launch the game in Steam VR using the Pico controllers, then switch to my XBOX controller to navigate the game menus, and then switch to my Fanatec wheel for the actual racing. Exiting a race would have me fumble around for the XBOX controller again to navigate menus. Very cumbersome.
    In the end, even with the great price for the Pico 4, the CONs outweighed the PROs by quite a lot. I think I will wait another 1-3 years to see how the tech improves before giving it another go.

    Got mine a week ago and have already noticed 2 dead pixels. Theyre not that noticable but still its totally unacceptable for a new product that costs just over 300 pound. Im not sure whether to send it back or just put up with it. Ive heard of people getting a replacement and having the exact same problems.

    I bought a Quest 2 so I didn't want to buy PICO 4, but I might give PICO 5 a fair chance since I prefer PC VR games over standalone ones.

    I would seriously buy one if they would fix their manufacturing defects, so many reports of lense distortion and dead pixels its really not on and it makes it dead on arrival.
    I know its a £350 VR headset but those 2 issues alone keeps me away from it. And if the Q3 wasnt coming out i would totally buy the Q2 instead of the Pico 4.

Karl always gives his honest opinion on all his reviews which is why is opinion, IMHO, is respected by his subscribers.

      @@KarlGosling and we all highly appreciate that. It's a good thing, that you don't need them or any company at all, but they obviously need you. I can get why other CZcamsrs really struggle to keep transparent and honest when they receive every new hardware and get invited to showcases around the world. And then you get to know the developers and as soon as you have a personal connection to the real people working for those companies it's hard to criticise the work they did. I am a developer too and i always try to see this from both the consumer and developer side. All of the hardware and software developers working at Meta or Pico work hard to create the best hardware or software they can, but in the end we're talking about corporate interests and if you look at the big picture of what Pico/Bytedance and Meta are going for it's a little concerning.
