    I've seen mentions of "what about McLaren & Aston, they're manufacturers who use a Mercedes PU."
    Difference is, Renault have this engine facility in Viry. They've been an engine provider for years. McLaren have never run their own engines in F1, and they produce their road car engines with Ricardo PLC. Aston Martin run Mercedes engines in their road cars. Renault would not be making this decision if their F1 engines were the best, simple as.

      @ExtraCafeinado Pƙed 8 dny +9

      Renault's sport department is... Renault Sport, the one who pulled the mid-engine V6 Clio Sport back in the 90s. Alpine is more like a premium sub-brand, like DS is to Citroën or Maybach is to Mercedes (yes, there's a tier up in luxury from Mercedes). AMG is the tuner shop for Mercedes, which was indeed and it was independent from Mercedes until they bought them. There's a 1989 Mitsubishi AMG Galant.
      And, now that we speak about Renault and Mercedes... They do share some factories around the world and the engines for some low-tier cargo vans and Mercedes cars are actually from Renault.

    • @Mathtoan91
      @Mathtoan91 Pƙed 8 dny +8

      @@ExtraCafeinado Alpine was first a tuner of Renault cars as AMG was first to Mercedes. They had a rather successful rally history with their Alpine A110. It was then bought by Renault in 1973. They even relaunch the brand in 2016 by producing the new Alpine A110.
      Renault Sport has been Renault sport car division since 1976 (producing Clio RS or MĂ©gane RS for exemple). They then rebranded Alpine into their sport car division since 2021 for example the new announced Alpine A290 is the sport version of the new R5 as the Clio RS was the sport version of the Clio (that's also why they rename their F1 team into Alpine so that they market the name brand Alpine as the new sport division of Renault, as for the new Alpine A290 being the sport version of the Renault R5)
      Yes Mercedes and Renault share some platform with Van and Renault actually produce the Diesel engine for some Mercedes car (if I remember correctly the Mercedes A180d house the 1.5dCi engine from Renault). But I was talking about the sport car division and pointing out the parallel between AMG/Mercedes relationship with the Alpine/Renault.

      Alpine is a car designer and manufacturer.
      Mugen is a parts manufacturer and a tuner and a racing team.
      Mugen would be more comparable to Alpina in the sense that they don't design cars and handle full scale production.
      The difference is that Alpina is part of BMW group which is not the case of Mugen with Honda. And Alpina has possibly a wider scope than Mugen since they do own manufacturing facilities which I don't think is the case for Mugen (i may be wrong)

      Been looking up Mecachrome. They're essentially an offshoot of Renault. Their engines (though named Renault specifically) supplied Red Bull (technically they got the bits from Renault and built the engines) during the Vettel years. Mecachrome then helped Renault when the 2014 rules came in. It wasn't good!
      Basically, it was a Renault engine that replicated their 1980s turbo "explosions" on the weekend. It took me back immediately to the days that Renault cars were called tea kettles because of the huge plumes of white smoke and steam coming out from the back of the car. At least those engines were fast!
      I discovered something unnerving. Mecachrome have supplied engines to Airbus and currently are building the nose wheels and the whole structure surrounding it (as far as I could tell). Maybe they should restrict themselves to being specialists in that field!

    To be fair, Alpine chose the cheaper Hypercar route with the LMDH regulations where it was asked to choose a chassis from 4 official manufacturers and spec gearboxes and hybrid systems. The engine they used was the mechacrome engine that powers the F2 cars. That were the engines that blew up. These "LMDH" regulations are cheaper to attract Manufacturers. Ferrari, Toyota, Peugeot and Issota Frascini are the cars under LMH regulations which require the manufacturer to construct their own car from scratch. A much expensive project...not as expensive as F1 but difficult nevertheless to build your own car from scratch. Which again adds to Ferrari's achievement of winning Le Mans first time back. 😊 BTW Toyota's GT3 entries at Le Mans were Lexus cars.

    • @Nikelaos_Khristianos
      @Nikelaos_Khristianos Pƙed 7 dny +1

      Important bit of context: Porsche and Cadillac specifically race LMDH not because it’s cheaper necessarily- though that helps - it’s also so that they can run in IMSA. That’s the biggest difference between LMH and LMDH - the latter can do both WEC and IMSA. So in the case of Porsche and Cadillac (and by extension, Penske and Ganassi) they’re able to run in more series for less money basically. AND it’s much easier to support customer teams that run your car when a lot of the parts are spec - hence the sheer number of customer Porsches, you know what you’re getting with Porsche!

    I really wanted Porsche Penske to win Le Mans, so when the captain would say, it's time to enter F1, then a big number of manufacturers would try to jump aboard the idea and them we would see the 11th team

    The problem is the rebranding from Renault was meant to be a launchpad for the alpine road car range but in that time they've released one mediocre car and about to release an EV hatchback now. If there's no fanbase gained through the external offering, people won't buy into the racing endeavours. The team itself obviously has many many issues but as a brand, it's not working. Think when Renault used to make Williams edition clios back in the 90s and how far from grace they've fallen.

    If it were to happen, it would be pretty damning to their engineers, for a company that’s basically a State Owned company

    I mean Alpine in this guise ran in WEC under LMP 1 and LMP 2 under a branded car with a Gibson engine for years. It's not the end of the world I'd say!

    Hilarious that they were once Mclaren’s rivals for ‘best of the rest’. The fortunes of those two teams have diverged dramatically.

    The fact that this team fired Otmar and made Bruno Famin, the guy who told on Otmar as the Team Principal was the first sign that this team is rapidly sinking.

    You made the point that they're an underdog team without the recourses and budget of the top teams but they arguably have more recources than most by virtue of being an engine manufacturer so I'm not even sure that's true - think of what a team like mclaren have done with on paper less recources. They just squander what potential they have which is even more embarrassing.

    With no ICE engines in Alpines future what’s the brand benefit of investing in them? Makes sense to focus resources on other sources of performance relevant to their brand.
