Nice review and I just had to laugh when you mentioned how the top cover is generally loose but it can be tightened up by banging on it with a hammer. How right you are, but with my Century Golani it was the opposite problem. As a former IDF infantryman, I took the top cover on and off day in and day out for eight years from 1986-1994 with ease, because it was an IMI product. When I purchased my Golani rifle in 2012 I was shocked that I couldn't get the top cover off. I literally had to use a rubber mallet to get it off and back on again. No matter, I had to send it off to Jeff at Hillbilly Arms for other issues as well, such as the bolt staying back when cocked. Gee, I had no idea they built a "bolt hold-open" into the Golani! (sarcasm intended)😉😡😡😡😤😤
@@cmdrcriton Perhaps all AK CLONED rifles might do that but not an IMI Galil. What kind of ammo do you use (brass or steel)? I checked on their page, and it said that shooting Steel and using 223 Winchester ammo would void the warranty.
I got one in February, it’s really cool yet it has a few issues like in the video. I had the firing pin break after a few mags in. Found a new bolt overall since the original had some heavy wear on it. Trigger slap was remedied by getting a original trigger, now no slap and it shoots so smooth. I have a BFPU version as well and it eats anything I’ve given it. It’s a bummer I had to do some work, yet it’s a BFPU, I was expecting that. Biggest thing is that it’s Maryland legal. Very happy I can get it other than another HBAR AR. Great review overall.
Funnily enough, I also bought one of these rifles in early February and also had the firing pin break following a rifle match (~12 magazines). Once I got it replaced I stuck a KNS piston on it and dialed it way down just like Jeff had to, which has alleviated the slap with the trigger that was supplied with it.
Awesome video as usual 👍I kinda wish they had chrome lined barrels, but like you mentioned it's really a 40 year old collectors item that takes proprietary magazines without current factory production, not a go to war/ choose just one for the apocalypse rifle, so getting the cost down is honestly more important for what this rifle actually is... But I still want one... I should've bought an SAR parts/builders kit for pretty cheap back when they first came in, but I like to save money by not buying unnecessary things only to buy literally the exact same item years later for way more money... Which I'll probably do yet again 🤣👍
Take a look at one of the Ikon brand Galil builds. Higher quality and a bit more blingy. Only negative is you need to use polymer mags, not a big deal. Thanks for the review, Jeff.

my southern tactical was pretty bad when i got it, and not issues with the parts kit they used but the qc from when they assembled it, stuff was loose and the trigger slap was insane that i couldn't even shoot it and it made me wonder if they even test fired it before sending it to me because who in their right mind would think that amount of trigger slap was good to go to sell, i decided to just get rid of it instead of sending it back to them because if they can't build it right the first time I don't know if I can trust them to touch it again or trust that there won't be further issues with it later on like headspacing. very dissapointed in it but I have heard a few of them that others got have been decent. I recommend galil's they are rugged and fun but I do not recommend southern tactical. I ended up getting the Ikon weapons micro galil and that thing shoots amazing and is very well built but sadly that company is now out of business so if you can find one in stock you should get it
Once barrel heats up 6 rounds or more rounds it fail to extract, that tells me chamber just a little too tight. Others have had the same issues, and they polished their chamber and got it to work so they say.
@ModernTacticalShooting that was exactly the solution I was going to give you. I had the same issue with my SAR build and polishing the chamber with a .223 flex hone with some oil for about 45 seconds with a power drill solved the problem. I've also used this method on a lot of other rifles that use nitride barrels as they seem to get more stuck casings than ones with chrome lined barrels in my experience.
I'm a LH shooter (yes, I admit it), so my only issue is the safety selector on the grip. I have a few Galil ACE Gen 2s and, to fire, the safety selector is pushed forward. It's nice to push the selector forward with the largest knuckle on my left index finger. On the old Galils it looks like the safety selector is pulled back to fire. Maybe that's a small issue, but I would think it would get detrimentally confusing.
