    As a teen who's been playing classical for 10 years, I learned the theory but not how to apply it. I'm trying to make the switch to jazz (it just seems so much more fun), and, during quarantine, videos online have been my only source of guidance. Thank you so much!

    • @MudStuffin
      @MudStuffin Před 4 lety +68

      If you've been playing for 10 years then I assume you have at least moderate reading and technical skills. So now what I encourage you to do to help you improve with jazz (mainly improv) is to transcribe pieces that you like (listen, learn how to play, then write them down) and transcribe the chords as well. Once you do that, you can find all the II-V-Is and take the licks from those parts and incorporate those into your own improv.... Wow, that was a lot... Good luck!

    DUUUUUDDDEE I've been struggling to gain an intuitive understanding of the ii V I for YEARS and you made it SO EASY.The phrases "leading tone" and "common tone" swam to me from long-forgotten band memories and you BLEW MY MIND when you did whole "v in front of every new key" trick. I have a whole new understanding of the keyboard now. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you are AWESOME and I'm BUYING A SHIRT. I would love to see further videos, perhaps deconstructing how keys can change within a song? BLESS YOU HAVE A NICE DAY

    I’ve heard it said that because the 2 5 1 idea is so ingrained in us that you can pretty much follow any minor 7th with any dominant 7th and any major 7th belonging to different keys and it will still sound good

Could you possibly put more graphics on screen of what chords you are playing to help keep things clear when you are explaining a concept? Nothing crazy, but like when you put the 5 and 1 up when you explained how you did the Imagine key changes. Keep up the amazing work. I can not wait for what comes next. Thanks for keeping a smile on my face throughout some rough times!

    The thing that made me crazy is at 11:00: "Once it resolves, that's a pleasing sound to our ears because it makes sense," and yes, yes it does, because THE UPPER NOTE OF THE G MAJOR CHORD IS THE LEADING TONE OF THE C MAJOR SCALE AND ITS RESOLUTION IS WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. All that talk about how critical the leading tone is in the 2-5 resolution, gets us all primed for this key insight, and now here are we are at the 5-1 resolution and it's just, "a motion that feels complete." Well sure it feels complete! The leading tone's resolving to the tonic! It's what makes this cadence sound so...authentic.
    Like, this is literally the one thing that I remember from studying voice leading (okay, that and contrary motion is better than similar motion, which I still think is a damn lie).
