- This video serves as an introduction/review of the DSM-5 as well as explaining how diagnosis works and how the DSM-5 differs from the DSM IV TR. Special attention is paid to diagnoses frequently seen in state psychiatric hospitals.

When I started my graduate program journey, the DSM 4 was front and center. However, the DSM 5 was coming and I thought the changes would be minor. Well, now that I've changed careers and entered into my degree the DSM 5 is soooo foreign. This video just helped me 100%.
(Un)fortunately, there will be smaller but regular changes going forward. Glad it helped and hopefully it will be easier to learn more frequent small changes that the overhaul every few decades or so.
How did you memorize this stuff😭. 100 slides on day 1 and now a book report on the reason I jump.. ? Please
@@jenniferhobbs9222 I don't think there is any memorization of all this. I sure haven't in 30 years. It is meant to be a reference book. What was more helpful to me was the decision trees that taught me what questions to ask to differentiate between diagnoses.
Nosy Bipolar I with no medical standing other than a name that unfortunately became an allergy medicine. Would you please pass the following along to the medical community. I don't understand why people keep getting into pissing contests with people freshly stamped with the DSM-5 diagnosis before finding out what it does and doesn't mean. I thought no one in my family having mental illness and the meds giving me bad reactions meant I wasn't Bipolar. I fought it for seven months and the psych ward didn't even approve the diagnosis. They said my family member killed themself and I was truly just depressed.
No one asked me why I didn't think I was Bipolar, and began to wonder why they teach medical students to ask that. Instead of the surpressed rage, they would have gotten the calming conversation to find out other places let you try new meds instead of forcing patients to take something their chart hinted might cause an allergy.
I didn't know all Bipolars have to spend a lifetime finding and maintaining the right cocktail mix of meds.
Why don't people ask questions like that? When a lifelong diagnosis is pushed on you, there is no support to try your way to health. They make you put up a fight because the doctor always has to be right and doesn't see the need to be curious.
I won't listen to a therapist or psychiatrist until I believe they are smart enough to know this stuff and curious enough not to miss subtle differences.
get your money back. it will only go downhill from there.
This was a helpful topic. Knowing the definition and review of DSM. Understanding the Mood and affect. There are so many disorders to know and learn. People who work with people that are mentally challenge, I considered are special and passionate people. I know a percentage of these people develop this disorder by lifestyle; and they involve an innocent child by being on substance while pregnant. A person can also become delusional or Bipolar, by taking an unknown substance.

Pornography addiction definitely needs to be in the DSM...different than sex addiction in my opinion but rampant. Thank you for the video, very helpful!
Thank you very much and I agree. When I was more active in the Sex Addiction Treatment community (hope to be again at some point), there were many discussions about whether porn was a "gateway drug" to sex addiction, a totally different thing, or just one of over 60 forms of sexual acting out behavior. Each has a case and the matter isn't settled. But the idea that it belongs in the DSM either alone or as part of sex addiction will get no pushback from me.

Much appreciated! The most important part of the DSM for me are the decision trees. They help you ask the specific questions to differentiate between diagnoses. I care less about the diagnosis than I do about finding out what may help the person and better info means better help. Good luck in your journey!

I appreciate your point of view regarding diagnosis. Judging someone solely based on previous diagnosis would restrain a person(patient) from healing.
I'm always afraid to go only or primarily by prior diagnosis. They may have presented differently and I may have a different perspective. Having prior info can be helpful though. Thanks for the feedback!

Triskaidekaphobia - fear of the number 13. I occasionally see buildings with no 13th floors or rooms. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is fear of Friday the 13th. I'm guessing these conditions are extremely rare but people do have them. Hope the video helped.

Very informative, as briefly as possible. Well done. I am motivated to do some volunteering in the personality disorder setting. Any suggestions/ideas?
I have a video on personality disorders and on trauma, might want to start there, Very challenging area of work but very necessary. People with personality disorders can be very challenging. Many are in inpatient settings. I'd suggest you do a lot of additional work on trauma. The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk and In the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts by Dr. Gabor Mate are a great start. Linehan's work in DBT is also really good. Good luck!

I’m at my wits in. My children 45yrs & 48yrs said no he’s not! Now divorce after 51 yrs. @ 72 yrs ole! Guess it’s all Part of life ! God has another plan for me I 🙏🏻

I have asked 4 different providers, and all of them told me, that the DSM 5 could not be delivered /bought in Switzerland at the moment and in the near future. Do you have an idea where I could order it? Sorry for such a stupid question, I am sure you are having other important things to do, then to answer such a question but maybe some students who are reading my comment might have an idea as well. Doctor what is your advise to a beginners who wants to learn in psychiatric and mental health?
I don't know the specifics of your situation, but what lit the candle for me was reading old psychology textbooks. Then, taking Intro to Psych and particularly Abnormal Psychology courses set me on the path along with my desire to help people. A new video on the changes to the DSM 5 and some abnormal psych content should be upcoming on this channel. Thanks for the compliment, but "Doctor" doesn't apply until I get my dissertation done. I know what is like to be on the business end of a correct (and several incorrect) diagnoses. Probably one of the reasons I have such mixed feelings about the subject. It is really difficult to do well and there is a tendency to lose the person in the diagnosis. The person is always first and diagnosis is primarily there to facilitate a proper course of treatment.

That is not the point I was trying to make. Most people do not have a psychiatric diagnosis. According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (www.nami.org), 1 in 5 Americans has a diagnosable psychiatric condition and US News (2020) puts it at 1 out of 3 due to COVID. I will be redoing these videos in the near future and I will make that point clearer. Thank you for your feedback.
