I find the idea that simply choosing forgiveness disregards the complexities of past trauma that's tied to a certain person. This is why I absolutely love how this episode ended with Katara rejecting the notion of forgiving Yon Rha . She didn't get revenge and she didn't forgive him but she was able to face her trauma and not allow it to carry so much weight over her anymore. Definitely one of my favorite episodes in the entire show!

I feel like what Aang was trying to say that Zuko, Katara (and a lot of fans) overlook, is that forgiving doesn't mean you condone what the other person did. He's simply telling her (and Zuko since he thinks it's the same as doing nothing) "hey it's easy to look the other way. It's easy to ignore it. It's easy to do nothing." Because by doing nothing, you're not actively thinking about what happened to you, the wrong that was committed. By forgiving, you're remembering that act, but distancing yourself from that pain.
Because you can acknowledge what they did was awful, but it doesn't have a hold over you anymore. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you condone anyone’s bad behavior. Nor does it mean that you continue to put yourself in harm’s way. Forgiveness is freedom. That's in part why Aang always leans into that route; he's an Airbender, and their element IS the literal definition of freedom.

@@TheRibottoStudios yes, forgiveness is for ourselves not for the one who has wronged us. however, most people (myself included) have no idea what it's like to forgive in a situation as serious as Katara's. these characters are human, and asking for someone to forgive the murderer of their mother is truly a buddha or avatar-esque position. it can be both the right choice but also one that would be nearly impossible for most people to make.

"...if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."
There's nothing anyone can do that we should not forgive, because unlimited forgiveness is always offered to us, should we choose to accept it. Unforgiveness can fester in the soul like a disease, spreading anger and hate like spores. Forgiveness brings peace and release.
That's not to say that wrongdoing should go unpunished. Forgiveness is not a denial of justice. But regardless of the offence, be it petty theft, r@p3, mrd3r, or g3n0cid3--to spare ourselves and those around us from deeper suffering--we MUST forgive.

@@space_acee That's more than fair. But let's look at it like this. Aang does not hold a grudge against Zuko for being Fire Nation. Even though it would well be within his right. He holds no grudge against Avatar Roku even though his inaction kickstarted the 100 Year War (I'm not gonna blame Roku for the Genocide of the Air Nomads). He even forgave and reconnected with Roku in the comics after they had a fight over their disagreements with how to handle Zuko should he ever end up like his father. He let go of the numbness he felt post losing Appa, he even offered an olive branch to Zuko in the Blue Spirit episode. And this is a boy who has lost EVERYTHING. And is a man out of time. He gets ragged on by the fandom for being a goody goody, but he's a better man than any of us. Certainly better than me because I'd be hella petty in his shoes.

Yon Rha immediately offering up his own mother as a deal after figuring out he killed Katara's mother is one of the funniest dark humor jokes in the whole series. I like the fact that Yon Rha is just this sad old man, because it shows that people who are put in positions of power can and do abuse that power to do horrible things, and it shows that even a war criminal like him who has done bad things is still a human being. This is such a great episode for so many reasons. The looks of fear and awe Zuko gives her when she's bloodbending and when she's stopping the rain, the serious conversations about morality, and also the reveal that Katara actually found her mother's burned corpse which is another reason why she is so scarred and still haunted by this moment
People always give Katara shit for being mean to Sokka, saying, "You didn't love her like I did" and comparing her loss to Sokka's, and Aang losing his people, implying that she overreacted. But the way I see it, Katara's whole character is centered around her taking care of people, being motherly, and protecting her friends. As she said in the Painted Lady, she will never turn her back on people that need her. She literally turned her back on her mother, who died in order to protect her. Exactly the opposite of how Katara sees the people she loves. She can't reconcile that shortcoming with her nature as a protector

    • @DarkAttackYT
      @DarkAttackYT Před 4 měsíci +10

Not to mention, people just keep underestimating the feel of anger. Katara was blinded by that sentiment because Fire Nation literally took away the one person she loved the most without knowing the reason why. She even heard Sokka that he barely remembers his mother because he was always more interested in becoming a soldier like his father and always saw Katara to be the one looking out for him.

If you look at 6:07, Sokka is fiddling with a lei...to imply that Sokka got "lei'd" in the tent! When Katara starts bloodbending, Zuko makes that face you make when you didn't realize you were gonna have to play good cop, like " 👁👄 🔴 THAT COULDA BEEN ME". And it's insane to know Grey DeLisle wasn't just Azula in this episode, but also Kya! Something to note about the name Kya is that it references how in the unaired pilot, Katara's name was originally Kya! However, due to the existence of a video game character named Kya (from Kya: Dark Lineage) and to avoid a potential lawsuit, the creators changed the name to Katara once the actual show began production.
The imagery of Zuko and Azula falling and Zuko having friends there to catch him while Azula has had to power through on her own is very telling about the way these two children who grew up in an abusive and toxic household and how their characters developed. The best part is that Zuko appears to be worried when she's falling but disappointed when she survives. I wouldn't take any other kind of response from a character as complex as Zuko. And not only is Zuko's leap impressive, but right after she said, "I'm about to celebrate becoming an only child", Azula stopped all forward momentum with her flip and also had enough power to launch herself backwards!

People talk about forgiveness, but, to me, forgiveness is something that must be sought.
Why should I have to go through the emotional labor of absolving someone of a misdeed when they can't even bother to own up to it? Especially something as heinous as killing someone in cold blood, this was an act of genocide, the fire nation was attempting to wipe out the water benders whether by imprisonment (in case of Hama) or death.
That being said, just because I don't forgive someone doesn't mean I need to dwell on what happened either. Life continues and you find a way to continue living.

I feel like you can see Azula falling from here, I think in the previous episode when she came face to face with Zuko again on the gondola she didn’t expect his new firebending abilities and and control he learned from the dragons. Where Zuko previously at best was able to only deflect Azula’s blasts he now has more peace of mind and control in his firebending so it makes him a much more dangerous opponent now.
It’s fascinating to see Azula slowly losing control and slip up after Mae and Ty Lee’s betrayal in the previous episode and Zuko reveling in his newfound abilities and finally gaining acceptance from this new friends.
The better Zuko becomes over the course of these episodes the more Azula is falling down, it just always fascinates me to see that parallel

Forgiveness is as much, maybe more, about healing yourself than about the one you forgive. One important thing, forgiving is not forgetting - you can forgive but remember. Also, just because you forgive someone does not mean you have to accept them back into your life. Forgiving is not about being stupid or forgetting things. Forgiving is about releasing the angry and moving on.
All that said: it is always best to forgive - and while sometimes that puts everything back to the way it once was, often there is still a need for consequences.

    RE: Forgiveness
There was a piece by Scroobius Pip that talked about 4 lessons that changed his life and one of them was "If you can't forgive and forget, then how's this - Forget forving and just accept." To break that down, you don't have to forgive somebody who hurt you, but you don't have to dwell on either. You can carry on without forgiving them or forgetting the pain and without aiming for revenge. It happened, sometimes nothing changes that and nothing will make it feel better. If you can't put it behind you then the only thing you can do is live with it, and you won't be able to do that without accepting that you can't change what has already happened.

Seeing Katara use Bloodbending again was a hell of a scene. One parallel I drew between Avatar and Harry Potter was Bloodbending being the forbidden dark form of Waterbending similar to dark magic in Harry Potter, in a sense Bloodbending is the Cruciatus Curse in Avatar but I'd say deadlier because the bender is legit the puppet master while whoever its used on is the puppet doing things they don't want to do.

My thoughts exactly. They said he retired, not got fired. As a member of a Waterbender Raiding company you would figure he would have had SOME form of payment for his service. Even Ozai has to understand the value of rewarding his soldiers with compensation. He actually has rewarded what he considers to be good service. He promoted Xaio to Admiral and gave him a HUGE fleet even after he lost a duel to Zuko. It kind of makes me wonder if the Fire Nation just revoked every privilege he ever had once he retired. Taking his home, his saved wages for services rendered; and just threw him out on the street.

One thing it's easy to forget is how these kids' literal lives have been depending on thier respective skills improving throughout thier journey so they've really honed them to become true masters of thier elements. One of my favourite theories about ATLA is that Hama, the blood bending woman is partially responsible for Kya's death.
"I'm not taking prisoners today" is probably because the last one developed blood bending and broke out of prison, which probably made the fire nation a bit scared of trying to imprison water benders.
The timeline fits too, Hama broke out of the prison before they returned to the south pole, which we can figure out because of Kataras age.

    RE: forgiveness.
I believe it is _not_ necessary to forgive others when they have wronged/hurt you. Holding others accountable for their misdeeds _is_ very appropriate, and may prevent others suffering harm from those individuals who are actually abu$ive -which is not the same thing as seeking vengeance.
I believe that survivors need to "forgive" themselves; for not being able to prevent the harm that befell them, for being damaged by the malicious actions of others, and for needing time and effort to recover from their trauma.
For anyone who needs to see this: Don't feel guilty for needing space, time and hard work to heal your soul. Remember recovery isn't linear, and asking for help is not a shameful thing. I hope you find your peace.

Forgiveness is literally the act of letting go, and has nothing to do with action. You can choose to forgive and to act at the same time. In the same vein, you can choose to hold on to all the bitterness and still do nothing. Forgiving someone who hurt you so deeply is so incredibly hard to do, which is why some people, including Katara, choose not to. But letting go is not the same as reconcilliation, making it okay or enabling crappy behavior, it's simply choosing not to let it poison you anymore. And this episode was an excellent example of what holding onto that resentment can do to you. It poisoned her until she was resorting to bloodbending, torture and attempted murder. She needed to let go.

It's likely Yon Rha is the one that owns the house and is taking care of his mother. I'm pretty sure that sort of thing would be the norm in the Fire Nation

  • @16luisgc

Greetings from Texas ✌🏼 I think Katara needed to get some closure about her past. She needed to confront her mother’s killer so that she can move on from this trauma. Maybe not kill him, but let her anger out. She did kinda blamed Zuko for this as Ozai and Azulon ordered the water tribe raids which caused the near extinction of the water benders. This was also Zuko’s chance to mend things with Katara because he’s giving her that window of closure. Thus, redeeming himself in Katara’s favor.
Also, I think letting Yon Rha live knowing that he left two children motherless for nothing is a better revenge than killing him.

Great episode. It’s nice to see Katara finally getting closure for his mother’s death, though still not coming to terms with it all the way through. I think this is a good episode to prepare us for the end, as it preludes to the moral dilemma we have to face in the final episodes: is killing ok?

I think forgiving someone for such an act isn't an option.
It's not so much about revenge, but I guess for justice.
I am not saying the same thing should happen to that person.
But you sure as hell should want that person to be unable to ever hurt anyone the same way ever again.

I think it's been the most scariest we've seen Katara, in any episode, we've seen her pissed before, but not this level of pissed. I would like to believe that scene where she confronts Yon Rha could of been much darker but toned down for a kids show. Who knows... maybe the Live-Action can show a more darker side of that.

I think Aang is wrong here. If you take an innocent life away on purpose, you shouldn't get to walk free without punishment, be it justice or revenge. That life can never be brought back, then there's the irreparable damage that loss does to the victim's family and friends as well.
Letting that kind of monster walk free is the same as doing nothing. He deserves his own medicine, regardless of how sad his life is. If someone killed my mother and I had Katara's abilities, I wouldn't let him live.

I'm still scratching my head to this day wondering: how did the Southern Raiders know there was a waterbender there without also knowing who it was? If their unnamed source had witnessed it, they should at least know that a child did it. Did they just happen across an unnatural ice formation and conclude that only waterbending could make that shape?

I think what a lot of people don't understand about forgiveness is that it's not for the person/people that harmed you, it's for yourself. It's you deciding you're done being angry and you don't want it to consume your life anymore. I can't imagine what I'd do in Katara's position, but I do know that she needs closure and for her the only way to get that is to face that man.
    7:24-7:31
I'm the same way. I'd like to be quick to forgive someone, but unfortunately, I like to hold a grudge for a while. 😬

This is such a masterpiece of an episode! I'm just in awe at how it was done. It always kind of bothered me though how Aang tried to convince Katara to forgive her mother's killer. Like I get the meaning behind it but I don't think forgiveness is the right word. I think you can still move on and heal without actually forgiving the person so I like how it ended with Katara stating that she will never forgive the man but is ready to move on. I honestly wish this was a two parter like The Boiling Rock. I feel like it so easily could have been with part 1 being Zuko and Katara hunting down the wrong man and part 2 being hunting down the right man.

  • @Thorite_Gem

I know you didn't show it, but in Katara's flashback, it fades out before she and Hakoda rush in. It's very much implied that Kya was killed just before, so Katara likely walked in on her mother's corpse. I think that's a huge reason why Kya's death affected Katara more than Sokka, and why she's so much more focused on revenge and making the man pay than Sokka. She saw her mother dead, while Sokka didn't. That would have a huge impact on your life.

I don’t believe in forgiveness, i believe in letting go and moving on. Forgiveness is only necessary when you want to move one with someone, but when things are so big and you don’t want a relationship or bond with that someone, forgiveness is not necessary

Wow honestly is crazy the Brayan and Dante were able to get away with in this “children’s show.
My view on revenge is that letting a bad person live on is the best “revenge”. It’s almost like torture. Being a bad person is an awful and agonizing existence. If you take that persons life you let them off the easy way. Also that person probably has a family, creating a cycle of violence.

  • @Delostacia

7:25 if I can, I prefer to ignore the person whether they choose to interact with me or not after the event. Throw them in exile. Then I give it time so my emotions go away, and then I can think about whether I need to take action or not. I don't want to be steamrolled by someone who doesn't care about me, but I also want to allow for second chances. So I might reach out and talk to that person, and if they don't respond I'm out. If they do, no holds barred. It's all coming out 😅
