    For those unaware, the number on the dash when shifting manually is not "actually" the gear you are currently in. It's the top gear it will use while driving. You're basically setting a range. So when you pop it over you could be going 10 mph in second, but as you accelerate it automatically change gears up and down as normal but won't go past the top number on the dash. As that happens the number on the dash stays the same no matter what gear you are in. I had no idea that's how it worked but it's true. I'm used to my BMW where you are actually changing gears and the number displayed on the dash is the actual gear you are in. Which in my opinion is a way better driving experience. However that is not the case on Toyota. Maybe it's good for towing or something where you want to stay in a lower gear range? I didn't know about the hold for 6th thing but I guess the would be useful when transitioning from a hill to flat open land? Still wish it worked like BMW, it would be an awesome workaround for gear hunting.

      I think 5 and 6 are your overdrive gears so its set to keep it out of those when first put in this mode. It will also hold gears a little longer in this setting so its good for driving roads with lots of elevation changes. I have a really steep driveway so I just set it to 1 so it will hold first gear for the whole climb - I do wish we had full manual selection as an option

      I call it gear limits. Limits you from going pass that gear. Ov tune and kd max tune does a good job on the gear hunting. I have kd max and love it. Also one version of kd max has gear lock. It will act like a true manual without a clutch. It will eventually shift for you to the point of the engine stalling

    I asked the service department regarding heavy towing with my 2022 Tacoma near Max capacity. The service guy said that he did a lot of towing, so coming from a good source that understands the Toyota and also Towing in general.
    He said with ETC on keep the gear shifter in the S position for local driving. On the highway at cruising speed it's okay to switch into the D position and let it go into overdrive. Back to S went off the highway and there will be speed fluctuations.
    For going downhill he said to keep it in S and let the engine do some of the braking. It is designed for engine braking. Pulse the brakes as well. Don't ride the brakes all the way downhill because they will smoke. Basically said to split the workload between engine and brakes for going downhill.
    I also verified that the gear shift in the S position is a gear limiter. Not a gear selector. It does not let it go above the selected gear but it will go below. They probably have some safety overrides.

    • @araldf
      @araldf Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you for clarifying that the S position is a gear limiter. Because the one time I tried to use it I felt the gears shifting and didn't understand why it did so I haven't used it again.
      On my previous vehicles if you choose a gear, that's the one it stays in. And that's what I tried to do since I wanted to drive on the highway keeping the revs as low as possible but even if I put it in gear 6, the Tacoma will downshift to rev more and that didn't happen in other vehicles I've owned.
      I suppose that being a pick up with towing function maybe the gear S is more focused on that type of use, or maybe on the highway and thus make it rev more on overtaking...although my intention was to use it so that it does not rev since on my road there is no need to overtake.

    The manual shifter is fantastic when approaching a big uphill grade. I like the 4th gear default. Works perfect. Gives the truck a nice boost in the 3000-3500 RPM range without fighting the automatic all the time. Easy to stay in cruise control as you pass by other vehicles struggling up the hill.

    Get some gas in that tank never let it get below a quarter tank. The gasoline is actually a coolant for the fuel pump. Thanks for all the secrets.

    • @sethjansson5652
      @sethjansson5652 Před rokem +3

      The only reason you shouldn't let it go below a quarter is because the bits of sediment and dirt will kick up in the tank when you go to fill it. That goes for all vehicles, not just Tacomas.

    • @douglasbaker5949
      @douglasbaker5949 Před rokem +7

      @@sethjansson5652 Yes. Fuel injected engines require higher fuel pressures than
      the older vehicles with carbs. Because of the work the fuel pump
      has to do, it gets very hot. The manufacturers put the pumps into
      the tank so that the fuel in the tank keeps them cool. It is for
      this reason that you should not run your vehicle with less than 1/4
      tank of fuel. Once the fuel level drops below that level, the pump
      is not submerged anymore, and it then has no way to dissipate the
      heat. This will lead to premature failure of the pump... Usually
      about an $800.00 repair.

    Heads up dude,
    The S Mode on the shift knob is not manual shifting. It’s a gear limiter. So whichever gear
    You’re in on that mode, the trans will not shift above that. I use it in S4 for towing to keep transmission at a stable drive point for hills, and lots of others use it for low speed off roading so their transmission isn’t constantly hunting for gears when you accelerate

    I have a 2019 off road with a smart key. Smart keys constantly send out a signal. If you hold the lock button on the smart key and then hit unlock twice while holding down the lock button it will shut off the smart key. It helps save the battery and thieves can't pick up your signal so they can make their own key to your truck and steal it. All you have to do to turn it back on is hit any button.

      What’s the speed limit on the road you typically drive? Ours is 70 or 80 depending, and I’m super luckky to get 16mpg, cruise nearly all the time on the highway. I have the OTT tune, no difference in mileage, dramatic difference in drivability, power, and throttle response. I always run premium and lately have been throwing in a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment with every full tank and the noisy injectors and DI fuel pump are a ton more quiet. Nothing effects mileage though. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I’d love to be getting 20mpg on the highway, 25-26 seems unattainable, that would be 10mpg more than I’m getting now. This truck is a ‘23 TRD Sport automatic, my ‘19 TRD Sport was a manual and got a bit better mileage. I wish this was manual also, but they were unobtainable when I was shopping. Anyways, would love some context about your average speed etc. Thanks in advance!

      @Rich G : The app is a paid subscription after the first year. You can remote start using the key fob. Press the lock button on the fob twice. Then press a third time and hold the lock button until the headlights flash 3x, and the truck will start. Press the lock button a fourth time to stop. Works on 2021 with push-to-start (e.g., TRD Off-Road). Not sure about prior years or trims.
