  • Some film of my first trip to Geneva Creek Iron Fens, Clear Creek County, Colorado U.S.A. August 6th, 2024
[ I only found out about this place a week ago, I did not know what a fen was.]
Fen - A wetland with low acid (High Ph, Alkaline) causing slow decomposition of organic matter. Usually fed by mineral rich groundwater, Fens have unique plants and animals. Fens take thousands of years to develop and evolve their ecosystems. The most common mineral deposit for fens is water rich in calcite (Calcuim carbonate, limestone).
Iron Fens - (according to my research) -These are a rare type of fen and seem to be unique and exclusive to Colorado . Iron fens form iron oxide (rust) formations of the minerals limonite, hematite, with other trace heavy metals such as lead, copper, silver, and gold. Various Colorado Iron Fens have species not found anywhere else, including types of moss, dragonflies, and carnivorous plants (plants that eat insects etc..) such as a type of Round Leaved Sundew plant.
The Geneva Creek Irons Fens - seem to be the Iron Fen with the largest iron formation. Walking in sandals even on the creek bottom, feels like walking on dry rock, it has good grip even when wet, as much of the surrounding creek floor is iron formation also. The slowly building and creeping iron grabs wood and turns it into fossilized "Iron Wood".
