  • Agostini glacier is in Alberto de Agostini National Park - the third largest national park in Chile. The park was founded in 1985 and covers practically the entire southwest of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.
The park and glacier were named after one of the most important priests in Chilean history, Father Alberto María de Agostini, who was in charge of drawing a series of maps of the Magallanes region.
At this location, Charles Darwin had a small encounter with the natives of this zone - an encounter which would be of vital importance when the scientist sat down to write its theory on human evolution.
One of the well-known places in the park is the beautiful Agostini Glacier - surrounded by mountains. There are no roads to the park, and as such, most visitors arrive by cruise ships or other boats, generally from Punta Arenas.
The park experiences extreme weather as the park is classified as a sub-polar oceanic climate - wet, cold and windy. On our visit, we added snow to that list.

So glad you are making this trip. But ... but ... I really feel that if you like this hike, you should definitely come here to Montana and to Glacier National Park ... preferably before the crowd of tourists in '24. The next month or two would work too as it's mid fall here as opposed to spring in Chile. 'Quite cool. 14 degrees this am at my place but warming fast. Indian summer next week.
