Overview of the international to international transfer/transit experience at Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) Terminal 2 in December 2021. Terminal 2 is primarily used by Japan Airlines and its Oneworld partners like American Airlines, Finnair, Malaysian Airlines, and Qatar Airways.
At the time of filming, only very few people could enter Japan and the country was closed for tourism. In typical Japanese fashion, the transfer process was very efficient, well organized, and coordinated.
Before attempting to transit through Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Tokyo Haneda (HND), there are specific requirements that need to be followed. Most importantly, you must be eligible to enter Japan if your connecting flight requires a change of airport between Narita and Haneda or vice versa.

Thank you so much. I'm heading to Canada via Narita from Vietnam next week and this has given me so much peace of mind.
Thank you for the video. We will have transit too from DFW this coming June. Very resourceful.
Thank you for showing this video
thank you for the video! it was very helpful!
Thank you for sharing! I will be transiting in Narita next week.
Thank you for posting.
Thanks! Very helpful!
thanks for the video very helpful.
Thanks so much. Very helpful.
Thank for the info
Hi! Thanks for the great video. Flying YYZ-EWR-NRT-GUM coming week. All UA segments so it will be at Terminal 1 but still helps a lot!!! Used to go to Japan 4-5 times a year, it has been way toooooo long.
Hey Jack. I’m flying from US to GUam -> layover for a few hours at Narita on UA. How was the transit in narita?
@@tim1traitimaccount269 sorry just saw this. So it was quite smooth, they will ask ppl entering Japan to deplane first. Once you entered the terminal , it was pretty much the same as normal time. Some shops are still closed but duty free are open.
well done video. next month im flying from Ho Chi Minh to Narita on Japan Airlines then from Narita to Dallas TX USA on American Airlines, & knowing both airlines are in Terminal 2 & are partners this really helps to realize it'll be a rather simple process to get back home. (got a near 3hr layover so i should have no problems).
How was the process for you? Next month I’ll be flying from HCM then transferring to another terminal for my flight back to the US, and don’t want to potential get stuck in the airport because of visa restrictions
@@stonedagain for me the process was easy. checking in for my flight to USA & going thru immigration at HCM was a breeze. then after arriving at san francisco (had to change my trip back due to unexpected cancellation & which was my 1st point of usa entry), it took me no more than 5mins to go thru customs, then once i got my luggage that was it. i downloaded mobile passport control app (its free from your app store & which saved me a bunch of time/was able to skip ahead of all the others in line
@@stonedagain i will be flying in 3 months and have terminal transfer also in Narita Airport. Keep me posted if terminal transfer in Narita is okay. Thanks!
I’ll be making the same trip from DFW to Uncle Ho/SGN via Narita. Before departing for Japan or while transferring in Japan, were you required to show anything Covid related? One would think that, since Vietnam dropped all requirements and it’s only a transfer, it wouldn’t be necessary, but then again, Japan is picky as shit about things like this.
@@booyabooya5162 my flight was canceled a day before i was scheduled to go back to USA, so i had to book new flight with other airline & never went thru Tokyo Narita
Thanks for this, I’m nervous about making my connection today but it seems like a breeze
Thank you. Extremely helpful! I'm headed to Bangkok too on July 2 through Narita. I went in February through Qatar and that was less than ideal. The Japanese airlines have always done me well.
Hey Joe I am also on this flight going to bangkok is it hard to get the bus to transfer from narita to haneda.
Do you need a covid test?
thank you, i have a flight through narita tomorrow and i was getting worried what the process was gonna be like
You have no idea just how helpful your video was for me!! I am heading to Bangkok next week. I was afraid of those body scanners but couldn’t find out if Japan was one of those countries that forced you to get in. I don’t mind a full body pat from a lady but I don’t want a stranger seeing me naked! Not to me tion all the COVID protocols. Looks nice abd orderly.
I passed through narita Airport back in May on my way home from Philippines and all they did was send you through a tsa check point and confirmed the covid test for USA entry
Thanks so much for posting this video. How long did it take you from the time the plane land to the next connection boarding?
I am flying in June with my kids and we have 1 hour and 20 mins to transit. I’m nervous that we may not have enough time
Check out my commentary starting at 8:44
I have the same 13+-hour flight coming up in October, although final destination is Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Good thing? It's also on a 787 - and that's it!
Thanks for posting this. Do you know if you can go to other terminals, say terminal 3 (more shops), while waiting for your connecting flight without going through immigration?
Same question. Also in case the next plane is from another terminal
S U P E R helpful video! 🙌🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Great info in the video AND the comments (read them all before posting). Just want to clarify about interline (different carriers) travel. I can transit in NRT UA-TG going to BKK provided UA let's me on the flight from IAH? And I can transit NRT on the return provided TG allows me to board in BKK? Thanks in advance!
Yes
The line was long at 8:53 and for me, the wait was long because I had ten minutes before plane took off and was still in line. They had to get someone to come and direct people going to Jakarta, HCMC, and other places to clerks who expedited the process at the counter. This was two days ago.
I'm going USA to HCMC late July; will Narita want Covid test doc, vacc card? (VN dropped both)
You’d think they would have ground staff making sure you’d get to your gate sooner and check your papers there instead, if you made it to japan then why check again and create delays and stress. Covid is over blown, the sicknesses are the regulations as its a never ending cold.
Great video! I have a flight from New York City, USA to Seoul, Republic of Korea shortly and it will first go from NYC to Narita then lay over 2 hours then transit to Noi Bai, Vietnam, and then from Noi Bai to Seoul. Would there be any issue at Narita Airport?
You’re flying JFK-NRT-HAN-ICN? If it’s one ticket, then you should be fine
Yes
Thanks for the thorough video. It seems that any checked luggage is automatically transferred to your connection and there is no need to retrieve and recheck them.
Correct.
Hi , I'm flying from USA to Nagoya, but first need to transit in Tokyo. Do you know if we need to do airport quarantine in Tokyo or final destination airport?
Great video. One question. I am going from JFK to Bangkok and connecting in Haneda (16 hour layover). Do you know if they require a covid test just for a transit passenger? I'm not going to leave the area of course, just like you did here.
They require what Thailand requires, nothing more
Hi! I’m flying to Las Vegas and will have transit in Haneda airport, do you think they will still require me negative PCR test though US is not asking anymore.
@@rominamaesumngat2303 Japan certainly doesn't need one because you're not leaving the airport. I know, because I have just gone the other way, JFK - HND - BKK, and Haneda did not ask for it because it's a transit. If you enter Japan you need one, but I don't even know if you can enter Japan these days without a visa.
Can you share, what are the requirements to transit ?
This video is really helpful! I'll be traveling from Manila to San Francisco on August. I booked my tickets via United Airlines. The first leg of my flight is operated by ANA, and will be having a 2 hrs and 15 mins layover in Narita. My connecting flight Is operated by UA. Just wanted to confirm (for peace of mind), would I still have to recheck in my bags at the Narita Airport? or would ANA transfer my bags to UA (since they're partner airlines and I booked the flights under 1 ticket)? Just wanted to be sure. Thank you and looking forward to your response.
Your bags will be transferred for you
Great i only have a 1hr and 20 min layoverin narita, if my Honolulu flight leaves on time! Has anyone made that tight of a connection? Id be so angry if they turned me around and didnt wait for me, i sure hope the flight waits! How long was that line? Will they expedite the urgent connections? Any info appreciated? And also no test for transit or flying jal?
Did you arrive into NRT on JAL?
New subscriber here. Do you know how is it for unv@xx transiting Hanaeda to Bangkok from LA. Is it just PCR test? Great video!! Very informative.
It’s the same as if your vaccinated. Japan requires what the destination country requires.
@@OnTimeReports Thank you!
Thanks for the video, my parents are traveling from China to US and transfer in NRT in the middle, the connection time is only 1.35 hours, is that enough? In the video you mentioned if the first flight got delayed, the connection fight will wait, is that right? Thanks!
Yes
Were there restaurants or Cafes opening at NARITA now?
Yes a few were open but during the late hours of the day, many had closed. Some were still temporarily permanently closed due to low pax demand.
I plan to buy from Seoul to Narita, then Narita to US. How was your experience self-transfer at NRT? Do you think it's worth save $300 per ticket instead of direct flight from Seoul to US?
Since you were only transferring in Narita, were you exempt from Covid testing/vaccine proof requirements?
Yes
hi.. thank u so much for this video!
did they weigh your carry on baggage? i have a connecting flight from vancouver -narita-ph... i am just wondering if they are strict with their carry on baggage weight
That depends on which airline you are flying as each airline is different.
I hope you can help, I’ve been struggling the past two days trying to figure out if my non-refundable trip will work next week.
I am flying with zipair from LAX to NRT where I have a self transfer and an 18 hour layover. Then I fly with the same airline to ICN in Korea.
I have no checked in luggage, but I’m afraid I would still have to go through customs and I’m assuming they will disregard that I am going to Korea within 24 hours and deny me travel even though I do not plan to leave the NRT airport.
You cannot have a overnight layover at NRT.
Hi Giselle! I'm curious how your flight worked out and if you were able to get through Japan. I am also flying ZipAir from LAX to NRT, then taking a different airline to ICN the same day and trying to figure out if they'll let me through as a U.S. citizen transiting through Japan!
So I have a layover in Japan then going to America and does that require a covid test?
Wait I have an important question. Is it possible to change airports from HRN to NRT (vise versa) if it is a connecting flight? I heard that due to travel restrictions Japan during this time, you are not allowed to change airpods even though it is a connecting flight.
That's correct, you are not allowed.
Is it true that we no longer need to obtain document regarding the covid test like PCR or antigen in almost all countries as long as we have been vaxed 3 times?
Thanks for the video! I recently booked a flight with a travel agency and my return flight home goes as follows: Manila(PAL)->Osaka(ANA) (1h15min layover)->Tokyo(AC) (Haneda, 3h layover)-> Toronto. I depart Manila on Feb. 19, 2023. With the transit restrictions where they are now, is my return flight even possible??
Thanks again. Very informative video.
That’s not allowed as per the rules currently.
Thanks for the reply! I cancelled my original leg and will be transiting in Korea instead.
Hi, thank you for the video. I did not see you get other luggages, I read something in the website that If you are transiting, you need to get your checked baggage and go through immigration process again. Is that the case? Thank you in advance.
When you transit, you don’t go through immigration
@@OnTimeReports Many thanks!
@@OnTimeReports What if you have to change airports?
I also noticed at the very end of this video you never stated how long you waited in line.??? I waited in line 2 1/2 hours at Narita, to transfer from United to ANA. But I wasn’t nervous I had more than enough time I had Two hours and 45 minutes between my flights. No I was very happy I didn’t walk to my next flight I had to run, I got there right before they were closing the doors. And yes the doors were closing so they were gonna leave.
yikes! This is the same route I will be taking in 2 weeks! That is very stressful!!!
@@ivydeguzman9813 don’t stress, a lot of the problem was the amount of paperwork that they have to verify. There’s a lot less paperwork hence shorter time verifying it..
@@waynecrozier9839 Do you mean, now? They have gotten better checking paperworks? I will be travelling with my 2 kids and would hate to miss our connection. TY.
@@ivydeguzman9813 know what I mean is the amount of paperwork required to enter Vietnam now is to an extreme minimum. So instead of 100 people waiting in line to have five documents verified to enter the country they’re traveling to Now they only have a couple documents, at least in the case of Vietnam…….. this is what is required to enter Vietnam now, your E visa , and your passport…….
Lol here’s a list of documents and documentation that I needed to enter Vietnam at the time.
My Covid vaccine certificate, my Covid test results within 72 hours of travel to Vietnam, $10,000 Covid insurance policy for Vietnam, my health declaration, COVID-19 phone app, my E visa which the check to verify the date of entry was correct and the form was legal, had my passport. So you can see that the documentations that they review are significantly less. Times that by 50to60 people believe me it adds up real quick…….. but now it’s so quick and easy, don’t worry about it, the airlines would not have approved the time limit for transferring planes if you are not capable of Making your connection flight.
Thank you for the video! Can I take a flight from LA to Seoul with a transit step in Narita with two different companies (Zipair and then Korean Air)? How will that work for my luggage?
No you can’t. But Zipair flys to ICN as well, see if they offer connecting itineraries
@@OnTimeReports Thank you!
What about without luggage? Assuming you stay air side and fly out same day, that shouldn’t be a problem as you wouldn’t need to pass through immigration (presumably).
Hello, I am flying into NRT this coming week and am switching from American (coming from Dallas TX) to Korean Air to go to ICN. My layover is 2 hours and 20 mins. Is that enough time to go through the processes and switch airlines and get my luggage?
That's on one ticket? DFW-NRT-ICN with DFW-NRT operated by AA and NRT-ICN operated by KE?
When you transit on one ticket through NRT, you do not reclaim your checked bags. Layover time is sufficient.
I have a 19 HOURS layover at Tokyo Narita Airport. There's nothing around to do is there? Can't even get an overnight bed anywhere?
Well… that’s because it’s illegal right now to have a overnight layover at NRT, unless you are eligible to enter the country.
@ontimereports did narita airport ask for prc test for connecting flight?
No, you don’t need one.
What kind of documents did you bring for your transit? I will have a flight in December and I'm also wondering what documents I should show. Thank you in advance.
What documents you need to show is determined by your final destination. There are no extra documents needed to transit in Tokyo.
@@OnTimeReports thank you. I’m going to the Philippines.
Does JAL require a covid test to just fly their airline? I heard some airlines you need to test!
No
I’m going to Japan from USA with a business visa (I am flying ZipAir) and after I planning to visit family in Vietnam (flying VietJet). On my flight back to USA, I will have a 6 hour layover in Japan, and have to transfer from terminal 2 to terminal 1, will this be all good? I purchased my tickets separately for Zipair and VietJet.
Given that presumably you are allowed to enter Japan with your visa, given the current restrictions, I think this would be a worth while risk to take on separate tickets.
Can you use credit cards to pay at the shops in the terminal? Which is the best sushi restaurant in the terminal?
Credit cards are accepted
Are we able to self transfer with different airlines? Flying with JAL from US to NRT (arrive in terminal 1) then Ethiopian from NRT to ICN (departs from terminal 2), same day, no checked luggage.
Same question, except I’m arriving and departing in terminal 1. Unfortunately, very little guidance from airport, embassies, etc. on this topic.
I think not having luggage means you can remain airside, since you won’t need to go through immigration.
It certainly can be possible but it depends on whether JAL will let you because technically they are only responsible for bringing you to NRT.
Transferring between terminals at NRT is permitted.
I just ended up rebooking a direct flight since there were so many "ifs" in the equation. Appreciate the help though!
Hi! I have a flight Montreal to NRT with Air Canada and then NRT to ICN with Korean Air (2 separate purchases/tickets), the departure flight is in Terminal 2 the same as my arrival at NRT. And the layover is 1h25 mins. Can I proceed to my gate with the Transfer process in the video or do I need to go through security check ? (I'm only traveling with carry-on, no checked luggage). Thank you 😊
* I signed up for automated check in with Korean air so I'd automatically have my boarding pass 24hrs before my connecting flight.
Forget about all that. Trouble is going to start at YUL where AC will likely deny you boarding unless you are eligible to enter Japan. Doesn’t matter if you have a KE boarding pass already as AC’s obligation is to only transport you to NRT as your final destination.
@@OnTimeReports I just went to my local airport and spoke with Air Canada boarding agents in regards to my itinerary and I'm allowed to board my flight 😊.
@@ravend9154 best of luck in your travels!
hello i have a question im going to canada next week and will layover at narita japan for 4 hours do i need to present RTPCR upon entering the japan? or before I proceed to my gate?
You present whatever requirements are needed for Canada. Japan doesn’t have any extra restrictions to transit.
Is it possible to have a transfer through NARITA airport with two different airlines and checked luggage? I will be flying from LAX through NRT to ICN (Korea) and I have checked luggage. Will it be required to go out of the "transit area" to get my checked luggage?
It’s possible, but the airline has to be willing to do so and have an interline agreement with the other airline.
Did you find a solution or did u cancel your flight? I have the same question
Hiii..my flight is from Toronto, Canada to Vietnam in November 2022 and have to transit in NRT for 2 hours and 10 minutes. My question is: Does Vietnam still require a negative PCR test to enter and does NRT require negative PCR test to transit for a few hours? I’m fully vaccinated. Thank you.
What you need to transfer in NRT is what you’ll need to enter Vietnam.
Hi, my mom is flying from Sai Gon to U.S in the summer and will transit at Narita Airport for 1h20mins. On her ticket, the arrival and departure are both on terminal 2. Does she need to get through the security check point again? Or just go through the transfer center like yours. Thank you
Yes security is needed again
Hello, similar scenario. Security checkpoint will be needed but what about immigration? I was told that I need transit visa so I’m trying to find a workaround by booking another flight within the same Terminal so I do not have to transfer.
@@twasianberryy did it work?
You think should be fine if I buy with different airlines my tickets? I want to do: LAX-NRT (one airline) and then NRT-ICN (Korea) with another airline
Yes
Are you allowed to go outside of the airporr to sightsee if its a 9hour layover?
No
I'm transiting to Narita airport from Haneda airport same day to Toronto Canada. Do they issue Japan shore pass for airport transfers? We have 4 hours lay over only.
No. If you cannot enter Japan, you will not be allowed to board at your origin. Change your flights so you only transit through HND or NRT, not both.
Thanks for the video. Do you know what extra steps are required it transferring to a non partner airline? I'm flying to NRT from DFW via JAL and was looking to get to BKK via ZipAir or Thai Airways? I'm guessing I'd have to get bags from baggage claim, re check them, and transfer terminals but would I have to go through customs therefore requiring a visa?
The need for JL at DFW to tag your bags all the way through to your final destination with your other airline. Not a guarantee they are willing to do it.
Hi Mike! I am curious if your baggage was able to be transferred to your final destination? I am running into the same issue, trying to figure out how to get my checked luggage from LAX to NRT with ZipAir, then to Ethiopian airlines to ICN in Korea. This is a lot to figure out with Japan's travel restrictions!!
@@laurenbosserman3743 I don’t think it’s possible since you need the visa. I ended up canceling my ticket and booking as a single ticket all the way to BKK
@@mikefortman2110 Ahhhh I see. I am contacting my airlines to check. Really regretting I wasn't able to get a direct flight to Korea and am nervous about this whole layover in Japan. Thank you, hope your trip was well!
Hello Mike I am back again lol. My trip to Korea is getting cancel because we can't transfer from ZipAir with a non partner airline. However, the airline suggested we could fly to BKK and save our money that way. I am curious, is there a travel VISA or Thailand pass required to enter Bangkok? I am checking the embassy and seeing mixed results, I appreciate your insider info and time lolol
How fast is the line go that you have to recheck bag and documents for your next connected flight because my layover hour is just 1 hour and 20 minutes until the next flight
You don’t need to recheck your bag. It should go to your final destination.
So does everyone have to go to the transfer counter? Can u skip it if you already the gate for your next flight?
No, it’s a mandatory step
So i do not need the covid test to transit to my final destination, right ? If my final destination does not require it ..
Correct
If I have a long (14 hour) layover, but it's all the same day between 7am and 9pm, is that allowed? And are the airside rooms (hotel-like, with bed and shower) open and available? It would be on JAL flights Delhi-Narita, then Narita-Honolulu.
Thanks
Yes the layover should be okay at NRT. I don’t believe there are actually any airside hotel rooms. They are all past immigration and require you to enter the country.
I have questions too i have flight this coming sept.9 2:30pm from manila i will arrive in narita airport at 7pm.so is it ok i can stay inside the airport still pls i need help.thank you
So, you never had to go through immigration or customs, right? You deplane and stayed on the air side until your connecting flight.
Yes
@@OnTimeReports what if it’s with two different itineraries/tickets? Should that still work without “entering” Japan i.e., passing through immigration? (Also, traveling with no luggage)

They transfer it automatically
@@OnTimeReports ok thank you 😊🤙🏾

I am traveling from Hawaii to Bangkok, with an 18 hour layover in Haneda. I booked a 1 night hotel stay at the Royal Park Hotel Haneda located inside the airport. I worry if the Hotel accepts transiting customers? Does anyone know if the hotel will accept us? 18 hours stuck inside the terminal, is too long.. especially traveling with an elderly mother & a 2 year old baby. Any advice or information is so appreciated!
You won't be able to stay in the hotel unless you are eligible to enter Japan. The hotel is landside, after immigration, and require entering the country. Your best bet is to change your ticket to one with a shorter layover.
I appreciate you in advanced in answering long hour airport transit question. I have a similar situation with about 14 hour transit. Is airside capsule hotel open and how does Narita Airport personnel handle the overnight/next day transit passengers?
@@JohnYongTheConductor you’ll be denied boarding. You cannot stay overnight at NRT. Call your airline and change your ticket

As long as it is one ticket, it should be good!
Out of curiosity, what would have happened if your flight to Bangkok got cancelled and there was no other alternative the rest of the day? What would the Japanese authorities have done at that point?
I have heard you would either be denied boarding at the originating airport or there would be some kind of a secure area set up to accommodate the passengers overnight at the airport.
My connection flight is from Seoul To Haneda(Asiana Airline) To Narita then To San Francisco(United Airline) . 2 different airports in Tokyo. Do You think I have to go through immigration twice?

Entry requirement of destination country.
Hi, I’m be transferring airport from haneda to narita and it is a 18hours layover, so can I leave the airport to go to Tokyo city? Or I can’t? are you able to go out in Japan?
I'm wondering the same! The flight I'm looking at requires the long layover and transfer of airports and I'm so nervous. Seriously considering a flight to Singapore then separate ticket from Singapore to Koh Samui.
1. You can’t transit from one airport to the other so you’ll be denied boarding at your origin
2. You can’t leave the airport when you are in transit
Don't waste your time and money. Under the current travel restrictions in Japan, do your self a service, cancel your flight and book another one that allows to transit from the same airport either in Narita or Haneda. Transiting between two different airports means you are subject to all entry requirements to Japan.

Under the current travel restrictions in Japan, do your self a service, cancel your flight and book another one that allows to transit from the same airport either in Narita or Haneda. Transiting between two different airports means you are subject to all entry requirements to Japan.
@@marvinpi8026 Thank you! So glad to know this before I ended up in a bad situation.

Hi! I Have a flight from mexico to Narita airport and then I will take another flight with a different airline to Bangkok. Is it possible with the tourism restrictions? my fear is that I need to take my luggage and I dont know if it counts as entering Japan.””
If your flights are all on one ticket, your bags should be checked all the way through.
@@OnTimeReports and if its in different tickets?
@@pilarolvera3432 there’s a strong likelihood that you’ll get denied boarding in Mexico - so change your ticket

Or the airlines will move it?
No need to pick up your luggage

Yep
My girlfriend is traveling from Toronto to kualampur and there is a 18 layover in Narita do you think they will allow her to check in or do i have to change her flight ? Its on july 7th
NRT does not allow overnight layovers. So unless Japan opens up by that time, you’ll need to change your ticket.
@@OnTimeReports thanks alot
I"m flying from Los Angeles to BKK in April for Songkran. Since Thailand lifted restrictions on pre departure pcr testing, does Narita require 72 hour neg rt pcr test for transit passengers? I don't want to waste money taking a pre departure test if it is not required in Japan.
No test is required to transit at NRT.
@@OnTimeReports thanks for the info. That's a life saver 🙏
Hey I am flying from San Francisco to Bangkok in July and will transfer at Narita. Did you need to recheck your baggages when you transfer? I am a bit worried because my flight from sfo to nrt is United airline and from nrt to bkk is Thai airways.
When I flew I didnt need to because it was with ANA, same airline. I'm not sure about your situation. Maybe you can check the airline or airport website. Sorry wasnt any help. Who knows I might even go back to bkk in July lol
