    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen Před 8 měsíci

      70% of people in the UK live paycheck to paycheck and cannot handle money for various reasons.
      The currency is irrelevant when one cannot set priorities and realistic expectations.
      Edit: to put things in context, let's assume one pays £1500/month for a small flat in London. A reasonable thing to do when moving to a cheaper country would be to find a similar sized accommodation for less. Paying the same amount of money if not "just a bit more" to have the feeling you are living in luxury is not the right mentality to have, especially when single (what are you going to do with all the extra rooms?).

    Thailand has been going up a lot over the past few decades because more and more people now appreciate the lovely lifestyle and what it has to offer compared with the Western world. And also because many of the frustrations about Thailand, of say 30 years ago, about communication and food and more Airconditioning have been mostly eliminated. 😀

    I don't think it is as easy nowadays to do the "visa run", whether by flight or by land crossing. Better I think to live in two countries (Thailand/Vietnam or Cambodia or Philippines) and try to navigate from there. For digital nomads that's doable.

    • @rasputinswalloper475

      @@untrainedassassin807 one way of doing this is a long term AirBnB or aparthotel with monthly contracts. If you want to stay in Thailand permanently it would be either work visa, marriage visa, retirement visa or Thai Elite visa. In terms of possessions I personally kept everything in a standard size suitcase with a rucksack bag. That requires a certain amount of discipline. Someone with a hoarding mindset or a penchant for lots of toys (car, motorbike) couldn’t do this.

    I lived in Samui 2009-2011. I visited in 2015, then again a few weeks ago. I cannot believe how expensive it is compared to up North or Bangkok. 300 Baht for a 5 minute shave of a bald man's head vs 60 Baht up North and 100 in Bangkok. Of course, I came back as a tourist, which is very different because when you live there you know which areas, shops, restaurants, etc., to get better prices. Even still, 7-11 goods are marked up in Samui compared with elsewhere. Another thing that shocked me is how built up it has become. They are building into all the picturesque hillsides, destroying so much nature; land that was previously protected. Areas like Bangrak and Menaem, where there wasn't much before, have lost their charm through development. And the pollution! That shocked me the most. The air used to be fresh there! The roads are so busy that you can constantly smell the fumes. It's still a great island with pockets of beauty to be found, and overall I enjoyed revisiting, but Samui needs some proper management, as it is definitely losing itself. It saddens me that for all the money the island has made over the years, very little has been spent on infrastructure, rubbish disposal, recycling, and drainage. I saw a hell of a lot of litter too. Sure, you have Central Mall, but it's just an expensive gimmick aimed at attracting "wealthier tourists". The softplay is a welcome addition for tired parents, though.

    Koh Samui is one of the dirtiest and filthiest places that I’ve ever been to. Lamai beach is covered in waste. I wouldn’t walk on it barefoot. It’s absolutely disgusting. The main road going through the town is ahell hole. You really would die very quickly if you didn’t take great care on that road. You must be utterly out of your mind and completely mad using a moped. I’ve been here for a number of weeks. It’s just not great.
