Expats are only lonely in Thailand because they refuse to learn Thai! Thais are very social people and it's nearly impossible to be lonely in Thailand. As a foreigner, it is imcumbent on you to learn the local language, not the other way around! A person can reach fluency within two years or sooner depending on their effort.

Like Ed I drank a lot during my youth, at one point your body does not recover that fast from drinking and you realize your are going to die at a early age if you stay on that path. Great to hear Ed's story. Some times I ponder what my life would be if I chose to stay in Thailand 25 years ago. Getting ready to retire me and my wife are building a home in Isan near her family. I am not sure I can live there. I start getting lonely after a few weeks when we visit with her family.

I can relate fella..built a modest home in a village and after a few weeks realised I couldn't live full-time with the poverty of activities and abundance of drinking which is so common in isan. would recommend early uptake of a regular exercise regime and networking at every opportunity! good luck with your relocation.

I can relate. I am looking to move to South America next year. We are going to live there for about 6 months to see how I like it and if I can live there long term. My husband loves the idea but we will see. We are also going to build a home there if I like it. My husband said, it up to me. So, hopefully I will like it and not miss my creature comforts too much.

You can go anywhere with a smile on your face and you would be amazed how many friends you make. But learning emergency or conversational Thai is helpful. When I was in the DR, I knew survival spanish, then joined a gym and picked up a little at a time. Its amazing how much of the basics can help you make friends. If you can get fluent its better of course but not neccesary to make friends.
As far as lonlinesss, depends on your needs, give me an internet conncestion, flat screen tv, a good gym to train at, a church or temple to go to and some good places to eat and Im not lonely...Also buy a puppy, they give unconditional love, always happy to see you (and puppies are chick magnet LOL) Best to ED on his journey. Also about people being lonely , the amounts of times I gone for a walk and seen guys in bars and just alone looking lost it’s such a shame it happens . Another great vlog Pete 👌

I have to admin this is exactly the case. I talk from my own perspective. I went back to my own country to solve my mental health and improved my financial situation. After that I went back, stayed at a temple for 6 months, learnt your language, found a job....and now I am living a happy single life in Chiang Mai. I got many Thai friends which I prefer over farang actually. 🎉✌️
